The tomato sauce was very sweet, and with the peppers mixed in, it created a taste that was not the most exciting. The gnocchi itself was a little on the mushy side. Perhaps the staff were just too distracted that day by the world cup opener that Italy were about to play. The mixed salad was not bad. The house red wine was quite nice. The strangest part were the comlimentary olives brought out before the meal. I think they must use the same super-sweet tomato sauce on the olives, but unfortunately, for me, it just made them taste like baked beans. That's not to say you shouldn't try it yourself. You just can't sum up an Italian restaurant from one serving of gnocchi and a bad bowl of olives-a-la-baked-beans, can you? As for charm, this place oozes charm like the Gulf of Mexico oozes oil these days...only in a good way. The staff were universally, pleasant and helpful. And what more can you have for atmosphere in an Italian restaurant than a bunch of guys shouting at each other in Italian? The decore, the building, the architecture all bring it together into a lovely experience. I will try Villa Romana again, most likely. There was enough possibility to allow them a second chance. But I won't be having the Arrabiata.

Adele was singing from invisible speakers - what a talent - and I had a coupon from groupon. About £17 a head got us any burger from the menu, with fries and a flight of 4 beers - each glass a third of a pint. My wife opted for a barbecue sauce style burger without the advertised hot sauce and I had one with crispy bacon, french fried onions and sliced fresh chilli. This was a five star burger and the bacon genuinely crispy as most places advertise bacon as crispy and it usually isn't. The fries are factory made and meh almost everywhere. The beers were superb too and I selected ale and stout for me and my wife had lighter ones which she enjoyed immensely. The lady serving was a delight and she was very attentive to us 'old' timers. Towards the end of our meal, business began to pick up enough for us to call an Uber and decamp. It had been a very long day travelling and Lethe wards was attractive. The carribean calls. What wasn't good. Well three things irked me. First no Colmans English mustard, second the base of the plate was very oily (transferred to hands eating) likely from the factory processed cheese square and its a cashless place that might account for it being quiet? Ok, yes we had a coupon so didn't need cash but this is not customer friendly and we tipped in cash. We must never cede cash as all control of our lives will be in the hands of politicians and those pretending to be politicians. I think the lights are dimming in the White House with democracy in critical condition. Here comes fascism, tempered by senility, greed and nepotism. Citizens may find their consolations where they can. I usually knock points off for no Colmans but the quality of burger toppings and server shout no: 5 star it stays.
