I dare you to find a better fall hiking spot! The fall colors here will absolutely blow you away. This 3-mile moderate hike can't be missed! Enjoy the wooded trail with well-market paths. At one part, you'll get a sweet high-up look at Lake Superior - just incredible! At another point you'll get the perfect viewpoint of Oberg Lake, which is simply stunning when surrounded by fall foliage. I'll let the photos speak for themselves on this one...definitely a highlight of the North Shore in the fall!

GORGEOUS views. This is a very easy trail, very well marked with incredible lookouts and a great view of the Oberg lake. it was the perfect fall hike

A very beautiful trail. The hike is about three hours long at a normal walking pace with a few stops. It's not very challenging in terms of terrain, but maybe that's just me cause you are constantly inclining very slowly. There were quite a few people on the trail the day I went, but everyone was very kind and friendly.

The most impressive display of fall colors we have ever seen in the Midwest is at Oberg Mountain about 1,200 feet high overlooking over Lake Superior. Its a relatively easy 2.5 mile hike on a trail that travels in a loop atop the mountain and follows the ridge line offering panoramic views from several outlooks of Lake Superior, Oberg Lake and the trees of the Sawtooth Mountains. The enormous forest surrounding Oberg Mountain when at peak is ablaze with red, orange and yellow leaves. It's absolutely breathtaking!

This was an easy 2.5 mile loop with excellent views (see photos). The trail is well groomed, easy to follow, and well-marked. There are several steep drop offs so it's probably not best to bring small children. Even if you have older children I would watch them closely.
If you are choosing just one trail to hike in Lutsen, this it it. This easy 2.5 mile loop trail offers stunning views with multiple scenic spots of Oberg Lake, Lake Superior and surrounding mountains. It's especially magical at sunset and during fall, when the landscape is alive with vibrant colors. read more
This trail is beautiful to hike in the fall! It's not to far off the road, so accessibility is nice. I would say it's my favorite trail in Tofte. It offers great views of Lake Superior, the rich greens of of trees, and Oberg lake itself. The trail seems well maintained and it's pretty easy to figure out where you're going! read more
Oberg Mountain Trail is a relaxed/casual 2.5-mile hike gaining 500 feet in elevation through the heart of the forest and offering occasional sweeping-view glimpses of Lake Superior in the distance. Towards the end of the trail, you get a scenic perspective looking down on Oberg Lake, which I'd label as the best highlight of the entire hike. Just to step back one moment with a few details about the location of Oberg Mountain and Trail... - It's located at about Mile 90 along Highway 61 - or more famously known as incredible North Shore Scenic Drive heading up the eastern coast of Minnesota. - Also, it's situated 60 miles south of Grand Portage, MN and the Canadian border with the US. - The closest small town to the hike is Lutsen, MN...just 6 miles down the road on North Shore Scenic Drive. - To arrive at the trailhead parking lot, it's a 2 mile drive uphill on gravel/dirt Onion River Road - 336. Once you park your car, there are visible signs guiding you into the lush green woods to go about enjoying nature. The hike is a straightforward loop with a clear pathway from start to finish. Btw...there are vault toilets beside the parking lot. For the 1st mile or so, there wasn't much to encounter. My mind actually started wandering elsewhere and I began questioning whether it was worthwhile even attempting the hike considering there are a handful of terrific state parks and waterfalls to experience throughout 150 mile - North Shore Scenic Drive. Finally, the excitement picked up when the trees eventually gave way to a few panoramic overlooks peering out upon Lake Superior. The sceneries were okay in general and decent for stopping for a photo or two. Heading towards the back end of the 2.5-mile loop, you reach a viewpoint showcasing Oberg Lake. This, in my opinion, was the memorable part of the hike. You can witness Oberg Lake in its entirety which sort of punctuates things with a positive finish. In total, the trail takes about 90 minutes. It's not difficult whatsoever and appropriate for people of all ages. You can bring lunch with you if you're in no hurry towards the next attraction. Overall, this Oberg Mountain Trail will afford you peaceful time in the forest above Lake Superior, which for the most part is pleasant. But there are a number of more renowned places to explore on North Shore Scenic Drive that will leave you with lasting impressions and a greater sense of accomplishment. read more

We did part of the Oberg loop with our kids. Loved the hike and will be back to complete it, trails are fun and well marked - some elevation in parts but definitely doable for our family. The overlooks are gorgeous! read more
Oberg Mountain Trail is an easy hike. My first time was in Summer of 2010 so it has been quite some time since I've been there but it was just as beautiful as the first time. There are several outlooks so be sure to stop at all of them. I brought my kiddos (ages, 10, 5 and 3) on this hike and though it was a mudbath, we had so much fun. It took us an hour and a half to finish. I've taken my kiddos on harder hikes so I truly believe that it's moderately kid-friendly, just make sure you watch your kids/hold their hands when you get to an overlook. read more

Do not miss this hike. Its moderately difficult but so worth it. And I'm 71! Sort of a rough trail but not too steep. The views at the top just get better and better as you go around the top. Breathtaking!!! Cannot recommend highly enough. read more

The trail is a short loop with beautiful outlooks and some great places to stop and picnic lunch. Well worth the detour off the main path.
