Was in town for a wedding and wanted to get all the Vietnamese food I could get while I'm in the area! I can never find snails or "oc" in Colorado so I was so happy to come to Oc & Lau! My family had really great things to say about it and they did not disappoint! My favorites were the snails in coconut sauce and the snails in tamarind sauce. Space was very clean and the staff is constantly running around making sure everybody is happy and doesn't need anything which is great for my family cause they always want something lol! Make sure to join the waitlist EARLY if you want to eat at a reasonable time. Our table of 8 waited about 90 mins for a table but luckily you can join right here on the Yelp app! I've been here several times and it's always busy. Be prepared to wait. Luckily, there is Yelp Waitlist. The key is to be here before 6pm. We came on a Friday night at 5:40 and was seated right away. A big restaurant with lots of seating and best to come with a group of people so you can order a variety of dishes. With that being said, restaurant is loud and packed. This was my first time trying a Vietnamese seafood restaurant and overall no complaints. All of the seafood was fresh, flavorful and unique. They have a wide selection of dishes that isn't just seafood but I would say it defeats the purpose if you're getting a meat dish at this place. The soft shell crab was super crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The crab/shrimp fried rice was also pretty solid but I think I prefer Thai crab fried rice. We also got a beef hot pot which was my first time having viet hot pot. I don't think it's for me, the beef broth was sweet and I don't typically enjoy my savory foods to be sweet. The meat itself was really tender though, maybe if we opted for a seafood hot pot it would've been better. Service was standard, quick and friendly. The restaurant was clean and modern with ample amount of seating. First mandatory stop from the SNA airport. It was sooo worth it to make the detour before reaching to our hotel. The King Scallops with Fish Eggs took the top spot today. They didn't go cheap with the scallops. They were indeed giants! The Garlic Butter Queen Clams came in a sizzling plate and the sauce on the shells was bubbling when the plate arrived. How appetizing! I found the clams overcooked and therefore chewy but I still like them. The crab fried rice with shrimp was the perfect accompaniment to the other seafood we ordered. The grilled escargots are a must-have when visiting this place! These are perfectly grilled with rich garlic butter for sweetness, and with a slight kick of spiciness from the peppercorn. Don't forget to also dip the escargot meat with black pepper and a few squeeze of fresh lime juice! If you like melted cheese, then the grilled scallops with cheese would be the perfect match. Each scallop is covered melted cheese and comes sizzling on a hot plate when ordered! Last but certainly not least, my favorite dish of this restaurant is the Chilean Sea Bass hot pot. The order comes with your own tabletop gas stove, along with a hot pot filled with a tom yum like sour soup base. Most of the food was really good. The favorites were the mango escargot salad, the razor clams, and the snails in tamarind sauce. All of those dishes were amazing and I recommend. Of those, the snails in tamarind were my favorite, as the tamarind sauce was amazing and paired nicely with the snails. The soda chanh dây (passionfruit soda) was amazing as well, and I recommend getting a jug (or two) if you have a big party. The Chilean seabass hotpot was just alright. The fish was great, however, the broth was a little too sweet for mine and my party's taste. Also, the snails in coconut were alright, as I've had better from other places. Service was great overall and food came out quickly and the staff was attentive. Parking was pretty easy, as it is located in a plaza with a big parking lot. Came here for the first time after a friend recommended it, and I can definitely see why it's so popular. It was super crowded when we got there, and we ended up waiting about 30 minutes for a table. But once we were seated and placed our order, the food came out pretty quickly. Everything tasted very fresh and had that authentic Vietnamese flavor. My favorite dish was the snail -- it paired so well with the sauce they provided. The mango squid salad was also really fresh and had a unique flavor that stood out. Overall, all of the dishes tasted like they were made fresh to order. The only thing I probably wouldn't order again is the bread. It was fine, but it was really just an ordinary loaf of bread and nothing particularly special compared to the other dishes. Always busy for good reason. Excellent food and excellent drinks. Perfect for sharing and large gatherings. It's a more trendy and modern take on classic Vietnamese tavern fare; the type of cuisine you'd have with beers and liquors late at night, focusing on seafood. However, I would prefer if there was a more flexible grace period for late arrivals especially since they keep telling waitlist parties to check in far too early. The last time I went, the servers were so incompetent. One of them would stack dishes on top of dishes that were already there and get the food dirty and overcrowding the table; this got really hazardous when it got to the tabletop gas stove and hot pot... we had to look out for safety instead of him just doing his job. I felt absolutely disrespected having our serious legitimate concerns so trivialized. We seriously have had such mixed experiences with service coming here. We got four dishes total and they were all amazing! From the apps to the different options of snails, clams and sauces that come with it. There was a moment the server gave us snails we didn't get but it was corrected. There was also a moment the clams blasted hot oil on us from it being so hot, so I would recommend a slight coverage on them when being served to the table as it did slightly burned my skin and don't want to cause further injuries to customers especially kids. Came to OC & Lau on a Saturday afternoon and luckily it wasn't too packed. The food was spectacular. We got the spicy stir fried squid, filet mignon udon noodles, abalone, and clams with cheese. The squid was probably my favorite, the sauce had so much flavor and the squid was cooked perfectly with a really good texture. I just wish the bell peppers were cooked a little more. The filet mignon was super tender, and I loved the chewy udon noodles and sauce. The abalone and cheesy clams were also really good. We also tried the coconut kumquat and the strawberry soda version, both refreshing and flavorful. I liked the ambiance too. My only complaint was the service. We had to flag our waiter down a few times and eventually went to the front to pay after waiting longer than expected. They did give us a free dessert though, which was a nice surprise. Their menu is quite extensive so it can be intimidating. But I love their sea bass hot pot, razor clams, grilled escargot, basil clams, fried quail in butter, coconut snails, and grilled chicken feet! Those are my go to dishes and they all have really good flavor. If you are overwhelmed by the sauce options, you can't go wrong with garlic butter. My aunt usually gets bloody clams but they have been overcooked a few times. They give you dessert at the end, which is a nice touch. All dishes came out really hot and fresh! All dishes were a 10/10 and packed with flavor! I wish I came with a bigger party since their menu has endless options! The prices for each plate were also super affordable too. It is definitely a treat to find a gem like this when it is very hard to find one in the Bay Area with great pricing. Missed Vietnam, went here to feel something. The vinahouse isn't obnoxiously loud so it feels just right. Clams, oysters, and scallops coming on a hot skillet makes the food come even faster! Our server was super sweet. All flavors were good but the clams came in a unique long oval shaped. The peppercorn was a bit too salty to my liking but everything else was good. Do not skip out on the cheese scallops. Oysters were good too! A cool spot to go eat and drink. Will definitely comeback for the hot pot. And don't forget to check in on yelp. read more
