Sunset- august 2022

1000% we'll be back! We've been looking for a family vacation spot for years. We found it. Small town vibe, great beaches. Amazing location. Lots to do and explore. We love it here!

I've been coming here since I was a little kid and have so many fond memories of hanging on the beach with family and friends. Obviously I'm biased here but I love this beach! Even though it's gotten more crowded over the years it still has that relaxed beach town feel. If you're planning a family vacation this place is perfect. The beaches are beautiful, clean, and free of any unnatural obstructions like jetties or rock walls. The memories you'll have at this beach are priceless! Quick tip: Be sure to bring a little cash to the beach. You and your kids will definitely want to try a Sunset Slush Italian Ice. Don't be fooled by the imposters. Make sure it's Sunset Slush. They are the best and great on a hot summer day.

Typical morning in ocean isle, with no crowd and calm water.

Great place to escape the crowds of other nearby cities. Ocean isle has great people with awesome local businesses. Typically families on the beach which is great and not a big party scene compared to myrtle. The surf is marginally better since the beach faces south and rain hardly makes it over the intercostal waterway. Plan your next family vacation to Ocean Isle and you won't be disappointed. Great people, great weather, great beach.

Beautiful family oriented island. Small and inexpensive. Perfect for a quick get away.

Quiet, quaint, and untouched. Beach resort town, with none of the lights and cheesy typical beach amusement. A great place to go with family year after year and make memories that will last a lifetime. Really affordable restaurants and extremely accommodating location to grocery stores and everything that you would need. If you're looking for extravagant putt -putt courses with Beach access or overcrowded beaches& McDonald's -simply put , you will be bored to tears and this is not the place for you !!! If you need to need to slow down a little and enjoy the little things with your family then I am positive that Ocean Isle Beach is the town for you and your family.

Our third miracle Aviah Jean's very first beach visit! Well her first beach visit outside of her mommy's belly anyway lol

One of the cleanest beaches I've been to, it's great for beach combing. The kid in you would rejoice if you love shells :) Important: There are no lifeguards on duty so please don't stay late after sunset. Although it can get extremely chilly and windy during cold seasons, it is a must-visit for people of all ages, especially families with kids. Free parking is limited and sometimes impossible to find during peak seasons so recommend going there early.

Clearly they make a lot of money on fines. For example, I got a parking ticket when I was parked in a public parking spot at the south end of the island. If there was signage, it was not clear. But fine, I guess I missed the signage and so be it. But now take a look at their parking violation. $25 - IF I pay it same day. I didn't even notice the violation on my window until the next day. So now I just paid $50. After 3 days, they Jack it up to $75. After one week it quadruples to $100. This is just shameful and disgraceful and I hope the town of Sunset NC lives to regret being so petty. Everything on and around the island is already pricey so I suppose the Sheriff and parking folks feel quite entitled. Get your act together Sunset and stop ripping people off you power and money hungry fascists.

Bottom line: Holden Beach is one of those quiet beach getaway destinations to visit at the NC…read morecoast. Not too built up along the beach/island but not too far away from the things that you may need as well. Well maintained beaches/accesses/public areas. I've enjoyed my vacations here so far. The Deets: Well, to be honest, I'd really go with 4.5 stars here but hey, what's half a star between Yelpers, right? Plus, we can't use half stars in reviews...so.... For the last couple of summers we've had the opportunity to go to Holden Beach instead of/in addition to our annual beach destination of Ocean Isle Beach. With Holden Beach just east (feels like north) of OIB, we are still in fairly familiar territory for our NC beach vacations and we can hop over there to enjoy old favorites if we want. What I notice most about Holden Beach is it is very quiet and not a lot of traffic, especially on the eastern side of the island we have stayed at. Nice open beach area (running east-west and facing south) and not too built up on the island area itself makes for a good get-away-from-it-all spot. If you'd like lots of restaurants, shopping, water slide fun, etc. or just needs those groceries then just cross the bridge back over and it's right after crossing the bridge to the mainland, so it's convenient. There are a few restaurants on the island itself but for the most part, it's housing/lodging along the main beach road. They do have one "general store" for convenience on the island side but you will pay for that convenience, of course. The beaches, access areas, and most common areas I've seen are kept well maintained. If you want a nice quiet beach getaway on the southern NC coast, Holden Beach is a good place to consider visiting.

Update 2026…read more Carolina Beach is a place we visit during winter season after the holidays in Wilmington, North Carolina. Parking is free during the winter season on the beach after the holidays are over. No traffic & no tourists. This year in 2026, stayed at an oceanfront hotel room in Carolina beach with a balcony. We saw so many sunrises on the Carolina Beach from our high rise hotel room balcony. It made me smile every day. The Carolina Beach Boardwalk was beside our hotel and a short stroll. We were sad to see the iconic Ferris wheel by the Boardwalk was taken away. Despite the cold weather and construction, it was good to see the beach again and walk the boardwalk in the morning. Most of the businesses were closed and we spent very little time there. Still a nice walk. ---------------- The best time to go to Carolina Beach is when parking is free and the crowds are gone in the winter. We had a fun time enjoying the warm yet windy January weather on the beach. No crowds, traffic, and tourists. It was very peaceful and fun. We went to Nauti Dogs for lunch and walked on the beach. Most of the stores were closed but we didn't care. Looking forward to revisiting this beach.

So better than most beaches I've experienced. There is a planked pathway across the dune with trash cans on both sides. Perhaps that's why there was very little litter today. Hamlet is far enough away from the commercial boardwalk to be quite peaceful and laid-back. The beach is flat and smooth though the sand is loose making for a good workout getting to the water. Very few rocks or shells. [Review 1357 of 2025 - 4476 in North Carolina - 24909 overall]
