One walks in and sees immediately a row of different roasts and blends displayed neatly along the wall on the left-hand side of the shop. In front of the bean selection runs a counter, separating staff from customers, holding various kinds of sweets. The coffee bar, in the shape of a narrow horse shoe, fills the right half of the small shop. At the back of the store stands a regal-looking, brass-fitted machine from which I was served one of the smoothest espressos I've had in some time. Flanking the entrance are floor-to-ceiling, sort of, bay windows each fitted with a small two-top table. -great perches from which to watch the many passersby. When ordering beans to take home, I was asked the usual questions (likes/dislikes, type of machine used) in order to help La C. help me get exactly what I want. Beans and a damn fine espresso for under 12 franks. Merci, La C.! La C., with the tram 16 stop just outside its door, is directly behind the main train station, so it's painfully easy to get to for both out-of-towners and locals alike! Most times I buy a sweetie to go with my coffee, sometimes I have my own chocolate or sweetie to enjoy with my coffee. This particular day Today I was sitting outside drinking my cappucino with a friend and enjoying 1/2 of a macaroon with my friend that I had just purchased around the corner and I was confronted by our waitress who said I couldn't eat that here. I was very shocked as I had did this numerous times in the last 6 yrs. I understand they have a few sweeties to sell as well but it wasn't like I was eating a sandwich or a croissant. When I left I went to tell the blonde witch behind the counter that I have been a client for 6 yrs. and have referred many clients there but I would never come back. As is normal in Switzerland she said " good goodbye, bye bye" as I was talking to her. As is normal in der Schweiz there is non existent customer service. She could have said, "we are sorry this is our policy and sorry to inconvenience you etc.." I can respect this. But to tell me "good, goodbye, bye bye" like I am not needed there was really way too far!! I have lived here 7 yrs. in Basel as an American they dont give a crap what your experience is like. Poor taste from poorly mannered people. And they want a pay raise in this country. To make 4000 chf a month as a minimum salary for untrained & unkind and ugly mannered people. I see the last review was in 2010 so as you see things have changed since then!

We found this option on Yelp, and it is a pretty cool building and very quaint inside. Unfortunately, the person behind the counter, and our server, did not speak any English...and we didn't speak German. And the menu was in German. So we really struggled to order our breakfast. But they were friendly, and we did manage to order something that we were okay with. However, in hind sight, we should have just stood at the counter and pointed to something in the display case to get the pastry or egg dish we wanted. Oh well, maybe next time!

The jam was delightful and the hot chocolate was good too! It came in a tea pot with my breakfast and there was enough for both my husband & I. You need to have a vaccination card to eat here.
