There is a trail that is a circular loop but it's not exactly marked so I recommend coming early enough so you can find your way out. To get there, just take the 102 N to exit 3B - take a right on Smith Rd and drive to the end and there is a parking area.

Biking into the common a couple of days ago, and up the relatively steep hillside brought me back to memories of Italy, traversing lofty hill sides in the Riviera. The plant life is so lush and perfumy, with birds chirping and bees buzzing, that I couldn't believe such a treasure exists that I'd scarcely been to in this city that I know so well. The park was quiet, with the odd pedestrian walking through, so Andrew and I sat on a bench and marveled at the magnificent view of the harbour and downtown Halifax. The sky was rich azure, the wind balmy and the company perfect. We sat for about an hour and chatted, while we enjoyed the gorgeous scenery, accompanied by a sweet little gazebo. I implore you to go and picnic in this wonderful Dartmouth park! It's about 300 acres of hillside, open to the public since the 1700s. Go enjoy Dartmouth's flourishing downtown scene, and walk through this lush garden park while you're at it.

For a long time, Seaview Park was a mystery to me. Always hailed as a gorgeous dog park on the…read morewater under the bridge, I just couldn't get my head around how nice something could be under the shadow of MacKay traffic. But yet, once you find it by awkwardly driving through what seems to be multiple wrong turns, you'll realize just how lovely this spot can be. There's tons of parking, a cute playground for the kiddies, and then a vast, well-maintained green space used primarily as an off-leash dog park. It's all fenced in so the pooches can't run fair, and there aren't many visual obstacles so it's easy to keep an eye without having to stay on top of your four-legged friend at all times. In fact, there's even a couple covered picnic tables in the center so you can take a load off while the furballs get to play. But now for the flip side...what these factors also mean is that sometimes dog owners get lazy and don't pay close enough attention to what's going on. As a result, I've often experienced overzealous dogs jumping up on people, getting too aggressive, and yes - even getting into fights with each other. Sure, this happens at other parks too but a lot more can happen when it takes an owner a few minutes to run over to the scene of the crime. Seaview also tends to attract bigger dogs so this might not be your best bet if your smaller guys aren't the bravest.

In the summer the canopy of leaves creates beautiful shade throughout the park, and the frequent benches are perfect for dog watching. It's a very popular one for dog walkers! And events - there have been pop up farmers markets, petting zoos, children's festivals...it's a great little community hub! And right across from (my favourite park ever) the Public Gardens, and right in the middle of the peninsula. Why not take a break and mosey on through? You deserve to relax and enjoy some sunshine.

I knew only that the nearby town Alma is known for its extreme tides. As mosquitos descended upon us, I fully expected to have a crappy time. This was not the case! Fundy is AWESOME. Between the incredible staff, the non-stop educational programs for all ages (we indulged in a fun sing-a-long campfire where hot chocolate was served, a moonlit guided kayak tour, numerous hikes and beach walks, etc) and the well-maintained trails, this is one of the most incredible parks I've ever visited. It has outshined every park I've been to in the US. It's tucked away in true wilderness, the kind of which I've never seen before, not even in Alaska. Miles and miles of open space. It was very green, and the air smelled sweet. And every sign was bilingual, which is exciting for a francophile like me! But it got even more exciting for me: In the national park gift shop, they had two books I illustrated!! I could not believe having traveled all that way and then seeing my own work in the gift shop, that was the coolest!! I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Fundy's lush waterfalls, excitable bats, cartoonish bullfrogs, abundant wildflowers, fresh air, approachable and friendly interpreters, educational programs, wonderful trails, views and serenity. I'm glad we made the trip! Thank you to all the interpreters of Fundy, especially Pat, for making our trip extraordinary!

Multiple workers complained about being underpaid and being poorly treated by management. I recently had a bad experience prompting me to voice my concern. I was outside the front door where a lady was yelling and screaming. She was smoking a pipe. Employees just stood by. The fact that this is just so normal to everyone there scares me. It makes a big difference when you're looking through the racks to have a friendly face telling you about the deals rather than feeling like you're in the way, which I've experienced at other thrift stores in the past. There are two floors to this shop - today the second floor was wedding themed, which was amazing. There were also formal dresses, jewellery, handbags and suits on display upstairs - anything you might need if you were going to or planning a wedding. It was fun poking through the wedding dresses and seeing right in front of you how much styles have changed throughout the decades! Downstairs there is a "front" that has racks of clothing and some jewellery and in the back, you'll find some homewares and yet even more clothing. Shoes, winter coats, and kids clothes are back there. The prices at Hand in Hand are amazing!! You won't find any almost-full-price goods here. If the item wasn't priced it was $4, and Friday's are student discount days! (Good to know!) We found an amazing hot pink pineapple print dress...definitely not for me, but one of our friends was so excited to be getting it. This is the kind of thrift store I enjoy being in - it really feels like you could find rare treasures here if you just had enough time.
