But besides the impressive church, it's the amazing view from here that's most rewarding. A really breathtaking sight over the valley and the Braza Mayor. It carried quite a good amount of water when we visited. So the view was out of this world. Here in northern Spain you almost feel that you got lost and ended up somewhere in Scotland with the green valleys and the water here. It's an impressive sight. We were almost the only ones around and had really time to enjoy it. Taking pics of course, but also just sitting and standing here and taking in these wonderful views. Really worth the quick but steep walk up here from town. Highly recommended and one of the highlights of our trip.

The Calle de la Carrera is the main drag in town. Countless shops, restaurants and cafes along the way. The Plaza Mayor is a nice square and the Colegiata de Santa Juliana an absolute must-see. There is some good shopping in town, good ice cream and really good food as well. But the village itself is a sight on its own. Almost every building is a looker, you could take countless pictures or just enjoy the walk through these streets and lanes. Pics won't do it justice, it's a place when in Spain that's not to be missed. It was pretty quiet during Covid-19 and the parking lot empty (and free). So it almost felt like we have the village for ourselves. We just coulnd't get enough of it, walking back and forward through the cobbled streets. Had some lunch at the "Terraza" restaurant, good fish and morcilla (blood sausage), fair prices and tables in a nice courtyard. Also bought some nice leather bags and purses in a little shop just next to the tourist office. Great quality and value. It's not a huge village, but we spent many hours anyway. It's just a feast for your eyes that we just coulnd't get enough of. Highly recommended!

The guide was funny and genial, in English and Spanish, as well as a few other languages. Seeing paintings as old as 40,000 years was truly an incredible experience. After strolling around charming Comillas we took a quick lunch break here. It's a small place with…read moreonly two benches, but fantastic views over the Playa Comillas and the ocean. It was on the way from the old town center back to the beach where our car was parked. Even though it offers great views, nobody was around and we had the place for ourselves. Brought some great tuna/tomato pie with from the local "Aramburu" shop. This was a great little spot to enjoy a quick break, some food and just to take in the nice landscape up here in the north.

Pena Tu is a cool little monument to check out if you happen to be passing through the Llanes…read moreregion via highway 634. It's kind of hard to give specific directions because it doesn't have an official address. There are signs off the highway directing you to it. PENA Tu is a giant rock with Neolithic Bronze Age art on it. It's free, so it's worth stopping for 15 minutes to check out if you happen to be in the area. On the way east we stopped here for a few hours. We parked at the beach. Easier, cheaper and lots…read moreof spots. But it's about a 10' walk away with lots of stairs. But for us the best option. The town center is pretty small, but filled with charming buildings. A very nice church in the middle and a lively square. There's some good food as well. Good cheeses, meat and pies can be found in several shops. Most restaurants are on the main square with lots of outside tables. Menus looked good, but we didn't have that much time. Bought some pie and ate it at some nice viewpoint overlooking the beach. Some streets here are steep and cobbled. There are ways around them if you have a stroller or a wheelchair, but it's still difficult to navigate at some points. Besides many good food shops there are arts & craft stores as well as souvenir shops. Also a "Dia" supermarket if you need some groceries. A nice little town for a quick visit. Wouldn't stay several days though, since it's quite a compact area only. But the beach is also worth checking out.

I learned in elementary about the drawings and I was physce that there was evidence of humans in caves. Crazy right? They don't allow pictures but they did have some reading material while waiting for the tour inside. So the pictures I have posted of the art is what we actually saw but couldn't take pictures of. You can go online and reserve tickets which is recommended. We bought tickets to see two caves. It's worth it. It was a surreal experience. Going there was beautiful. The view was nice and inside the cave was amazing. A real cave. The day we came they were excavating the front looking for more stuff. Words can't describe this experience.

There is a lot of interesting medieval architecture in Potes. One of the most striking examples is…read morethe Torre del Infantado, which physically stands out in the center of Town. Gayle and I came upon it as we were walking off a big late Lunch at Cafe Cayo. The 15th century Infantado Tower is build on a square plan with four corner turrets and crenellated at the top. It has now been refurbished to include a cool scenic viewing platform on top, a pretty atrium, optional open stairways, and a some really neat exhibits. We enjoyed the one on bears and handsome presentations of various monastic holy books. All of it was in Spanish, but we managed to figure out the essence. It's all very well done, free, and with friendly folks to help you if you need it.
