Great pastry and coffee. Ofner is a Brazilian chain bakery cafe. They also carry chocolate and seasonal chocolate gifts. Their pastry is tops in both quality and freshness. It is one coffee shop we frequent whenever we are in Brazil. read more

Before I left Brazil, I wanted to grab a couple boxes of brigadeiros to take home for my family…read more For those who aren't familiar, brigadeiros are small, round Brazilian truffle-ish chocolates covered in chocolate sprinkles. They are extremely soft and sweet, and according to Wikipedia the main ingredients are condensed milk, butter, sugar, and cocoa. Anyway...back to me wanting to bring some home. I love chocolate and my family loves chocolate, so I thought these would be a good little treat to bring back to Hawaii. On the Sunday afternoon before my flight back to the US, I stopped at Padaria Gemel with my friend's mom to pick up some brigadeiros. I'm happy that I knew exactly what I wanted to get, because Padaria Gemel had so many items to choose from! Chocolates, cookies, cakes, and pastries galore...so many items there looked amazing and delicious! I stuck with my order of brigadeiros and got two boxes full to bring back home with me. The brigadeiros are sold individually, so ordering a lot will only fill a small box. I didn't get to try them until I got home, but they were sweet and soft and delicious! I would definitely come back to try more of their sweets and treats! Three stars is mainly for service. As a visitor to Brazil, I had a hard time ordering my brigadeiros by myself. I got a few not so nice looks from the ladies behind the counter because I had a bunch of questions about the candies (mostly about how long they would keep and would they be ok without refrigeration for 24+ hours of travel). Even though my friend's mom was helping me out, I could sense their thoughts and the fact that they didn't really want to answer all of these questions needed no translation for me to understand. TL;DR - not very nice looks while asking questions, great brigadeiros, and lots of bakery options!

A welcoming and open space at Rua Padre João Manuel 968, capacity for around forty diners divided between indoor and outdoor seating including comfy chairs, it is immediately on entry that guests will notice cases filled with Cakes and Pastries, the menu spelling out choices from Santo Pão's kitchen adding to an already tough decision with everything from Soups and Sandwiches to housemade Pasta. Open from 08h00 until 22h00 Monday through Saturday, doors closing an hour earlier Sunday, it was after minutes of indecision that Cold Brew was selected to pair with savories, the former rare in Brazil but in this case excellent while both Brazilian Cheese Bread and crispy Tapioca folded around creamy Eggs and Herbs were also well made at a fair price. Slowly enjoying the Eggs while browsing complimentary WiFi, and never rushed by English-fluent staff despite a crowd, it was after enjoying a small Cookie provided with the Coffee that sweets were ordered, the "Croissant with Hazelnut Cream" in reality a masterpiece of lamination ladled with warm Nutella while Santo Pão's signature Banana Cake lived up to its billing with soft layers divided by housemade Dulce de Leche.

It is in Bixiga or Little Italy, São Paulo; an area where you will see some beautiful smiles and get some pats on the back and invitations to sit down for coffee and a chat by some very kind, real and hospitable locals. The owner is Frank. A lovely man with a very big and generous heart and a bigger smile. His entire team echoes with his love. He took me on a tour of the entire establishment and had me try five types of bread and I don't mean just tore off small pieces or samples - these were rolls. The freakin' ciabatta, the focaccia, the onion loaf, .......! Needed no butter and no dipping oil. These loaves of fresh and hot bread were popping out of the oven - OMG! The olive oil, the herbs and the milk came together to make these plump and small pieces of art( please see the photo by the oven) have the perfect crust and flavor & texture. The oven - the original oven is 126 years old. Yes, 1897! That is when the Padaria 14 de Julho opened for business. Old school, original recipes, great family tradition, love and warmth. You say São Paulo in Brazil as in 4770 miles south and east of New York and 5770 south and west of Palermo, Sicily? I say Heck Yeah! . But it's only 6 miles from our hotel( the Grand Hyatt São Paulo) and about 15 miles from the international airport. It's magical, it's real it's Padaria 14 de Julho. Get down here guys and gals.
