For my milestone 100th review, I just have to give props to my Alma Mater, THE Ohio University, est. 1804. This is not to be confused with Ohio STATE University, home of the Buckeyes. They are _much_ better at football. It really did get me to where I am today despite the recent bad press. For the most part, colleges give me a tad bit of anxiety. Visiting UC Davis recently, I felt like I forgot to write a paper, or that I need to go to class, or that I was missing valuable drinking time before class. Remembering what year it was and that I was a big boy now eased these pains, but reassured me that I wasn't going to get my Master's anytime soon. In any case, here are the things I miss from going to school here: TONY'S : This was a locals bar, but also my favorite. Warm Killian's Irish Red and Coors Light on tap just added to the experience of classic rock music and drunk townies. You will likely see me wear a T-Shirt advertising this bar. THE GREEN : Just a nice patch of grassy land underneath enormous trees. I would often go here while I cut class on very nice spring days. JEFF' HILL : Short for Jefferson Hill that is now closed due to bad road conditions (most of the uptown is paved in brick. The kind that would trip the unsuspecting pedestrian and cause their drunk friends to laugh incessantly). There were many a sledding on cafeteria trays here during snow storms. RTV BUILDING : This is where I got my Communication Systems Management degree. In the bowels of this building, I was at class almost all week. Though I would think this area would bring me anxiety, this is where I first realized that I was finally _getting_ college. COURT STREET : The main street of the small University (population 30,000, which was also about the number of students who in attendance). Though it's gotten a bit commercialized in the past few years, I will always remember the many strolls down the street looking for a place to eat or imbibe alcohol. Ohio University is a drinking school with a football problem. It's a hell of a party, as has been established. And it's not an ivy league education. But I got out of this school with solid broadcast experience, and had a real job within six months in an industry that's notoriously hard to crack. And I met so many people in the first years after college who maybe could have schooled me on Proust, but who didn't know a CG from an editing block. Along with most of my fellow classmates, I have OU (and their stellar com/film/journalism programs) to thank for my career. And it's a hell of a party. :) read more

Some of my favorite memories from OU: Freshman year in Jefferson Hall. It's all uphill from here, little girl! Even my room was on the fourth floor...down the hall...around the corner. At least we had our own dining hall...the one thing for which I didn't have to walk up a cliff. The Tower. Ah, yes - see, back in my day the college of Health and Human Services was housed in the Tower. ...You mean I have to walk all the way to the freaking football stadium?? Memorial Auditorium. Please attend an event here. This is a great venue. Have an opportunity to perform here while at OU? All the better. Performing at Mem-Aud is one of my favorite memories of OU. Irvine Hall. I still can't think about Irvine without immediately wondering if I smell a faint lingering of formaldehyde. Friday morning 8am Anatomy lab is a BAAAAD idea. That aside, how could I possibly say it any better than this?? BEST UNKNOWN BAR CITIES IN NORTH AMERICA STUFF MAGAZINE So you're looking for the best unknown cities for bars? Let me tell you about Athens, Ohio. Athens is one of the best-kept secrets in America as it is tucked away in the beautiful hills of SoutheastOhio. Home of Ohio University, every autumn this small town becomes packed with 20,000 co-eds and includes one of the most famous drinking streets in America --Court Street (see Halloween Bash or Daylight Savings Time riots). Court Street, also called Uptown because every path leading to the street is uphill, is a 200-year-old brick-layered road that includes 19 bars within a two-block area. The bricks literally provide stumbling blocks for the impaired as they cross the streets to other bars. Drink specials? How about quarter draft night? You can get drunk for as much as it costs to do laundry (and many times for the poor college student, it comes down to drastic decisions like that -- getting drunk or wearing clean underwear). Quad night is the highlight of the week. Four times the alcohol in mixed drinks for only two bucks. "Clearance" at the Pub is a close second. Certain nights from 7-9, alcohol is "on sale" for half price. Oh, the Pub also offers "Aquariums". It's a great sight to see everyone drinking beer out of glass fish bowls. Many of the bars have their own personalities: the sorority bars, the sports bars, the jock bars, the dance bars, the band bars, the microbrews, the preppie bars -- but all of them are full of good people and cold beer. Famous OU alum bar patrons include: Matt Lauer, Arsenio Hall, Sugar Ray Leonard (his son played football at OU), Paul Newman, the guy who plays McGuyver, Piper Perabo (Violet from "Coyote Ugly"), Ed O'Neil (aka Al Bundy), and even Cooter from "The Dukes of Hazzard" among others. The Court Street Shuffle is the holy grail of pub crawls. They even sell T-shirts to commemorate the night. The shirts list each of the 19 bars where "Shufflers" are supposed to have a drink and a shot. Groups of shufflers gather, vote on a "name" for their shuffle (i.e. "The More I Drink, The Prettier She Gets Shuffle"), and begin the mission. Bartenders and patrons sign the shirts and as the night progresses, the shirts become more filled with messages. It is inevitable to end up with magic marker stains on the skin. I went "shuffling" with my girlfriend once and the next day she mysteriously had messages (and phone numbers) written on her stomach, back,legs and breasts from random guys. And no bar bathroom in Athens is complete without seeing a random graffiti listing of past "Shuffles" on the walls. Late night munchies, like the bars, are also plentiful. Burger King,Wendy's and Taco Bell (the world's largest Taco Bell) are all open late to satisfy the drunken hunger of bar patrons. Also, $1 slices of pizza are freshly baked and served at a local bakery on Court Street. The legendary Burrito Buggy -- literally a trailer that serves burritos -- is the king of late night snacking. Yes, ordinarily the burritos taste like they're made in a trailer, but at 2:30 a.m., it tastes like heaven. The best part of all -- no drinking and driving. Nobody drives to the bars. Court Street is surrounded by housing, so a walk...er...stumble home is only 5-10 minutes. And since it's Uptown, it's much easier falling home drunk since it's all downhill. In fact, Jefferson Hill -- a major pathway to dorms and apartments -- is one of the steepest hills you'll ever walk up (or down). It has been known to cause intoxicated people to tumble down it, scraping knees, bruising tailbones and yes, even knocking out teeth. (It's the same hill that Paul Newman rolled a keg down as a student and was expelled.) So if you're looking for a verdict in deciding where to find a night of cheap drinking, nice people, good-looking young women and fun, thousands of visitors and residents suggest taking the bar exam on Court Street. read more

I was just a visitor to the university and must say it's beautiful. There's no school like it out in California. Brick, colonial style buildings with white shuttered-windows. Cobblestone streets, green pastures, and even a pond on campus. For how old the university is, it's in great shape, and situated in a cute little town. Of course, I'd still never go there as a student!! It's out in the middle of nowhere!! read more

psychology sucks, doesn't count the grades appropriately, if your are getting 461 out of 517 that's a high "B" so, how is that a low C? Then they would tell you to do better, no you guys need to count better. read more

This review is for the students of OU. I can't say I connected much with the professors during my 4 years here, but the friends I had at OU were (and are still) completely wonderful. Athens is truly a magical place, where you can try out anything and everything and not have to worry too much about getting into trouble or situations you can't handle (be smart though, and travel in pairs). Yes it is in the middle of nowhere, but that is part of the atmosphere. Yes it has a reputation for having a good time, but the students are fun-loving, accepting people who will do anything for their friends, and know that college is just as much about the socialization aspect as educational/books. You can have a good time and still earn your degree and get a great job. You aren't going to find snobs here. Learn to love! read more

I paid $36000 to develop a drinking problem and be yelled at by angry priests each semester

What a disappointing experience with OHIO University! I just completed my first semester of the online MHA program this summer. Unfortunately, I am already invested so I have to continue. I wish I didn't give OHIO my employer's hard earned $4000. The online program is great. However, the university's Office of the Registrar is archaic. While the school has a good reputation they need to take a more modern approach to their business. Academia is a business no matter how you slice it. Ohio may have more success by treating their students as customers. Long story short, I called and told the office of the registrar that my employer is paying my tuition and that we will take advantage of the payment plan. At the time, it was not an issue. Once they received my first check from my employer they changed the status of my payment plan, put my account on hold, and added late fees! They then told me that I need to apply for sponsorship etc. They told me that the payment plan is not available for sponsors. Essentially, the sponsorship program is a barrage of contracts to secure payment. Fair enough but this was not relayed to me at the time. As a customer, I felt that they should have honored what they committed to me in the first place. I spoke with them several times on the phone and sent letters for support with this issue. I needed to know about the sponsorship program prior to enrolling. I would have shopped around for another school. This is neither here nor there at this point. We came to a compromise and that they would honor my request. In fact, they didn't honor it. My account stayed on hold. No one called or emailed me to tell me I was $0.50. short. I voiced my concerns and disappointment with the registrar's office. As a business owner, I would take the approach of appealing to my customers (students). I would have waived the $0.50 in order to keep my customer happy. I will not recommend this school to any of my health care administrator colleagues. It's so disappointing. I was really looking forward to the program. Now, I have zero desire to hang my diploma when I am finished with the program. read more
