    Beer stein holding contest
    Susan K.

Fun local Oktoberfest in Redwood City that has grown nicely. Huge festival tent with a music stage. Ticket includes 1 liter stein and a 1/2 liter pour of beer. 4 Spaten beers to choose from as well as Devils Canyon Root beer. Food was ok, but would be nice to have a little more to choose from. Music is different for each session. There are 5 night and 3 day ticketed sessions, Friday and Saturday nights sell out fast. Wine might be a good option for non beer drinkers! Kids welcome too Run with mostly volunteers so tip well to help the local Arts and Park scene so we can get more fun events like this locally.

Peninsula Oktoberfest tickets were offered by two seatings on the weekends (12-4 & 5-9). I got my fiance' and I tickets at $18 each for the 12-4 on Saturday. That included entry to the event under a big white tent spanning over RWC's Courthouse Square and a liter beer mug - which is actually quite nice. Beyond that, what other pleasantries Oktoberfest had to offer were overshadowed by all lines we had to wait in starting from entry, acquiring tickets, getting beer and another line if you want something to eat with your brewsky. Although, I purchased my tickets prior to the event, we had to wait in line which was surprising to me. They had various sandwich boards of letters to categorize people by first name which essentially channeled three different lines to the door. I stood in my appropriate line only to hear an event organizer shout if we had purchased our tickets already. Of course, we went right in after. So that was strike one. All the long lines were mixed with those who already bought tickets and those wanting to purchase tickets. There went 15 minutes of wasted time. Once in, we had to head to another line for food and beverage tickets at $2.50 each. It took 3-5 tickets for beer (1/2 liter or liter) or a plate of food -pretzel, salami & cheese plate or a couple sausage/bratwursts. After buying 30 tickets, we headed to the 3rd line for beer. Of course, we fill our mugs to avoid waiting in line AGAIN for a refill. This line wasn't too bad, but we were hungry. I decided to grab us seats at a table and the Mr. stood in line. I must have sat there for about 10 minutes before he returned to the table empty handed protesting his refusal to stand in the line under the hot sun that had barely moved. So together we sat there drinking beer on empty stomachs watching the line for food which grew to almost the entire width of Courthouse Square and moved slow as molasses based on watching the guy that was in front of him. I'd say it was about 30 minutes or more to get to the front. While waiting for the line to die down, we did watch some cultural dance with an accordion player and a Yodeling Contest which was most amusing. The performers were sitting at our table and one of them was nice enough to offer part of his pretzel. I bashfully obliged. It was saving me from getting overly inebriated! When the line shrunk to only a 15-minute wait, we got a pretzel, salami & cheese plate with a couple bratwursts. We actually had to return to stand in line again for the bratwursts which weren't ready yet. The soft, large, pretzel and bratwursts were tasty, but it was disappointing that they ran out of mustard. Basically, we came to Oktoberfest and waited in line 5 times which pretty much sucks up about an hour of your time minimally. Looks like the aversion we felt towards this event has remained consistent since 2014. Get a clue Oktoberfest.

I know this was a first time for an Oktoberfest in the Peninsula, but the event was excellent! I was honestly pleasantly surprised at the turn-out, being that it was 1) the first time 2) the weather wasn't the greatest.. But what can you say? A little rain isn't going to stop folks from drinking & eating! They had some really great food and beer vendors -- especially for beer enthusiasts. I could appreciate that they really tried to branch out and have different types of food vendors -- celebrating the Bay Area's diversity really. My friends and I had a great time. I can't wait to go next year!! P.S. I too was in love with Louis Vuitton. He had sunglasses from Neiman Marcus! LOL I hope he makes an appearance next year!!!!

The band was great and the dancing was so much fun! Thanks Redwood City.

We had about 90 minutes to kill so had a look about, There were lot's of tents with games set up for children to play, a mini market selling crafts and some food stalls but I saw a severe lack of Salsa! lol. Maybe I shouldn't have taken the name too seriously as I was expecting to be able to get some Chips and Salsa to eat or even see some Salsa Dancing but no. There was also a big tent set up for Tequila tasting but there was not one drop of Tequila in sight or any indication when the event might start. I witnessed about 5 minutes of Music in the main square where a very large group of people had gathered waiting but then... nothing. For 10 minutes we stood there thinking ''well, everybody else is here, there must be something big about to happen''. So we waited... and waited... Still nothing. We eventually got bored and headed to The Sandwich Spot instead.

It was definitely a fun weekend event worth going to (since it was free). You do have to purchase salsa tasting packs though. I bought the 20 dollar pack, but I definitely think that it was unnecessary. Stick to the smaller amount because we had way too much for two people. My gripe is that my top three votes didn't make it to the top three?!?! Wtheck, maybe my tastebuds were off that day.

By the time 2:00pm rolled around, I realized I was hungry and noticed a booth selling BBQ'd oysters, these things were huge! And looked amazing. 3 giants oysters for $10. They had garlic, parsley and as he put them on the plate, the guy scooped pure melted butter and poured on top of them, with a wedge of lemon! Food, art, and merchandise  galore, to be viewed and/or purchased. Fascinating art displays caught my eye at every corner, so unique and simply remarkable. The Italian Street Painting Expo featured pastel paintings by chalk artists (my fave was the Sleeping Beauty piece... cuz how could I not love the rabbits in the boots!). Chopin & Chandeliers was an interactive piano with a "play me" sign just calling for musicians among the crowd to showcase their talents and entertain attendees under a shaded tent decorated with chandeliers sculpted from upcycling materials (ie. plastic bottles). The live entertainment was amazing and enjoyable, getting the crowd on its feet and in the mood for this joyous event. The rhythmic sounds of the violin and keyboard, by Tom Rigney & John R Burr, was a treat for my ears. And the late afternoon band on the Waverley Stage, The Cook 'n Fenny Combo, kept the good vibes going, heavy on the harmonica, tambourine, and guitar, performing hits like Joan Osborne's One Of Us. This was a great festival with free admission, lots to see and do, well organized, welcoming atmosphere, friendly people, and easy street parking less than a block away in the afternoon.

Your usual arts and crafts booths, live entertainment, fine wines and micro-breweries, food, children's corner with games and activities, all of it present. This one is a lower key event. The antique and vintage cars on display are much fun to check out, perhaps to chat with the owners. My wife was smitten by the 1967 Porsche Slate Grey 912 (pun intended). Warm, badly mixed Jamba was being upsold at the large size price for medium sizes drinks, and while they had incredibly helpful people at the information booth, the music on the fifth ave stage was really really bad. The teenager on the base was quite a good player, until she opened her mouth and you caught on she was tone deaf. I sat a block away and finally had to put on headphones. The second stage near first ave was much better, with a vocalist who worked the crowd - it really was a pleasure to listen and she was the saving grace of this event for me. All in all, there really isn't much reason to come to this unless you live nearby - the vendor selection was the worst I've ever seen, so if you stay home, you probably won't be missing much.
