The cemetery is easy to spot, has a plaque at the entrance, free to visit. Not very crowded, on the hill, peaceful site. Capt. Daniel Malcolm, smuggler and supporter of the Sons of Liberty is buried here, also, Robert Newman, known for hanging the lanterns during Paul Revere's midnight ride, Edmund Hartt, builder of the USS Constitution, free African Americans and other historical figures. Another historical site, Copp's Hill dates from 1659 and it was Boston's largest colonial burying ground. Definitely worth the visit, you can stay as long as you want. We spend about 30 minutes in here, lots of nice greenery (we were here late summer). As usual, you get interesting puzzle pieces of history while browsing this site.

Let me explain. Granary Burying Ground is free. Although there are tours with guys dressed up in Revolutionary times attire and white powdered wigs who give you some sort of pun filled 5th grade education story about Paul Revere. The day/time I came the Burying ground was filled with 2 of these tours and a middle school field trip. The graveyard isn't big enough for this or the big 4 everyone is here to see. There were over 100 people in here when I was here and that is entirely too many. The graveyard has a ton of old cemetery plots, but many have weathered over the years to the point they aren't legible. The big 4 are Sam Adams, Paul Revere, John Hancock and Mother Goose. Mother Gooses's tombstone is all but illegible. Also why is John HanCOCK's tombstone the only one in the whole burial ground phallicly shaped? Sorry I am a 12-year-old mentally. Anyway, definitely a must stop if in Boston for the 1st time but watch for the crowds

The main office staff was lovely, outfitted me with a map, and off I went to find Anne. If you are at all interested in the literary strides these lady poets made during a time of complete male dominance & as forerunners to second-wave feminism (all while managing mental illness), I've got a book for you! Visitors to the Sexton family grave left stones, an embroidered handkerchief, and even a bottle of perfume. I figured I'd find ee cummings (because I was told how tricky he was to find). He's hidden next to his wife's family grave (Clarke) with a flat marker, so I did some hunting and Googling to find it. I also saw Eben Jordan (founder of Jordan Marsh) though I did not know who he was at the time. His mausoleum commanded a lot of burial real estate. You drive your car throughout, park as you would in any cemetery, and stroll around. Gates close at 4:30pm. (could be 4 pm).

It is definitely the prettiest, greenest, most walk worthy cemetery I've ever seen! We stopped by the visitor center where a staff recommended a particular way to walk to the Washington tower in the middle and to see Isabella Gardner's grave by Auburn lake. We appreciated the windy, cloudy day with glimpses of sun for our adventure today. Several tombstones were guarded by statues of a favorite family dog. Many were clearly family plots. We climbed up the many winding stairs of the Washington tower for a breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view of Boston and of the greenery below. We'll be back! We only spent an hour here today but could've easily stayed 2-3 just exploring. Highly recommend!

(I walked from campus in 20 minutes.) When you walk in, pop into the main building to use hr restroom and pick up maps of the cemetery. You'll learn the cemetery is the first one in the country intentionally designed as a garden/arboretum too. The map will guide you to monuments and memorials and notable burial sites to abolitionists like Charles Sumner and poets like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. If it's open in the warmer months, climb the Washington Monument for a view of the city. It's closed during the winter, but the hill it's on still offers unobstructed views.

A very large…read moregraveyard Harmony Grove is a very large and cool cemetery. Opened it 1840, it is built on very uneven terrain and has some steep hills, great old trees and lots and lots of different types of gravestones and memorials. I'm not sure how many acres the cemetery has but it certainly is vast. A cool Gothic revival chapel built in 1905 is at the entrance and then the small roads just sort of meander over the hills and through the trees. Lot of huge, medium and small sized monuments. Some quite modest and others very impressive and not doubt expensive. Some famous people that I never heard of are buried here as well as a whole lot of not so famous and ordinary folks. Some obelisks, morbid looking angels, a Civil War monument and even a couple of old cannon are scattered about. Some of the gravestones are literally hanging on the edge of small cliffs. One of the very coolest and most interesting graveyards I have been to. You can quite literally spend hours walking around here. A cemetery that is a fascinating place to visit even if you don't know any of the residents.

His tombstone is very high quality and extremely well preserved with a beautiful memento mori - an excellent stop when exploring Boston for sure! You'll find this burying ground along the south side of the Boston Common, entrance is along Boylston Street. And while it's smaller than some of the other more famous cemeteries, it's very much worth a visit - especially to see the grave of Chow Manderien! Chow was a teenager from Guangzhou that sailed with merchant sailor John Boit JR - who helped pioneer trade between the US and China. Some websites say his actual name was Zhou Libei but some don't mention it so I'm not sure. Chow began his journey at 17 years old and unfortunately died after arriving here at only 19 years old in 1798 - he fell from the mast of one of the ships. John Boit thought so highly of him and was so upset about his accident that he provided an extremely high quality headstone that has endured the ages, much better than many of the others in the cemetery. And also maintained records of him handed down through generations of his family! This part of the Boston Common seems much less crowded and is right next to Chinatown. I'm absolutely shocked that Wikipedia doesn't mention anything about this significant piece of history in the listing for this burying ground - seems to me to be the most significant burial here!
