Overall 2.5 Stars - Explanation below A local and staple establishment that has been around for over 10 years in Philadelphia, MS. It has been years since I've been here and we went there for lunch cuz the other Mexican restaurant was closed on Tuesday. Ambiance 3 Stars - a large dining area when you enter through the double-glass doors. You are greeted by the host to one of the many tables or booths. The area is broken into two sections: a smaller dining space that has at least twenty tables and the much larger main dining area where there more booths and large tables. The art deco is your typical Hispanic decoration and they are nice and cute. Not too gaudy. Service - 3 stars: our server was pleasant and professional. However she was tired and was responsible with many tables. She wrote and verified our orders. The drinks arrived within 5 minutes. The supporting staff were professional and helped when needed. The food arrived 20 minutes afterwards due to the lunch rush. Food: 1 - 2 Stars Out of respect, I didn't take any pictures of other entrees except my own. Salsa 1 star and Chips 2.5 stars The salsa was not appetizing at all. The tomatoes and herbs had a funky taste and I asked the other people's opinion on it too. They all agree with my assessment. It tasted like a can of "stewed tomatoes" blended to a liquid matter to become "salsa". The chips were a lot better and we enjoyed our basket until the entrees arrived. I had the Lunch Beef Chimichanga w beans. 2 Stars. I asked for the queso Blanca as a side. I don't like my chimi to be drowned in queso. The dish came w lettuce, guacamole and sour cream. The chimi's fillings were shredded beef, queso, and beans. Beans - 1 star Before I tried the chimi, I scooped up a healthy load of beans with my chips and I gagged on the salty beans. Fortunately I had my tea to swallow to cleanse my mouth. Now for the chimichanga. 2 stars Presentation wise, the chimichanga looked good and I was ready to dive into it. The tortilla's outside crust was flaky and golden brown. The guacamole was on one side and the lettuce on the other side. However, when I took the first bite, my expectation went from "high to low" upward smiley face to downward smily face. It was salty, salty, salty. The cheese and beef couldn't hide the amount of salt that was in the beans. Even the guacamole and sour cream couldn't help it. I asked the other members of the party and they said their food was salty too. Half of the party ate their food and I ate most of the chimichanga. Saving grace was the sour cream, lettuce and guacamole. I didn't touch the beans. Because of the busy lunch crowd and getting back to work, I forgot to mention to management and our server on the salty beans. That was my fault because I believe we should respectfully and calmly explain our disappointment with the food. As a previous professional in the restaurant industry I believe professional criticism is a sign to improve on an area of weakness. I am my own worst critic when I make my own food. Now would I come back again, I don't know. Can I recommend this place? The ambiance, server and staff were decent and I would if I was getting a drink instead of food. But for now, I don't recommend Old Mexico, however this is my own personal opinion. There are many loyal customers of Old Mexico and they may know something that I don't. Nothing to brag about this place except for the service. The food was not good at all. It had a smell to it like some sort of cleaning product. Chips and salsa wasn't that good either. Texas Mexican food has spoiled me I guess. read more

The food has always been great, they keep your glass full and it is a clean and relaxing dining area.

It's a good place to come to to chill and drink in the bar area with friends and enjoy some food. Pitchers of beer are under $10 most nights and that pours 4 full glasses. The food is also fairly good and cheap as well. Just a chill place to eat Mexican food. read more

The salsa was bland. The entrees were barely edible. My buddy's side order of refried beans was HUGE, but unappetizing. It seemed to be a Mexican restaurant for people who like to drink margaritas who either don't know better, or just don't care about the quality of the food. I stopped in with a friend last week for the lunch time meal. I am 72 yrs old and have eaten in a lot of Mexican restaurants in my life. This is the best one I have ever been in. Great food, great service, and they make sure you eat well. I ended up taking half of my food home. The prices are less than some of the other so-so ones in town. Been here a couple times. Both times were great experiences. I had the fajitas mixed with steak and chicken. The single serving was more than enough for two people. It was only $10.75. I live in Memphis and it's as good as any Mexican restaurant in Memphis. The service was great. To top it off, we were checking out and the kids wanted to put a quarter in the gum ball machine. I didn't have any change. A waitress (not even our waitress) came over and gave the kids quarters for the gum ball machine. You don't see that kindness too often. We'll come back again!! read more

Lunch today. It just before the rail road tracks on the right. I had Chili Relleno and salad with beans. All good. I was surprised by the salad. Just lettuce, tomatoes and guacamole with a bit of the salsa provided by me. Really good. The Relleno is consistently good. Bi recommend it for lunch. Good food, friendly attentive service. Menu was what you'd expect from a local type Mexican restaurant, but our dishes were both very good. One oddity that some customers might find off putting was the big screen TV playing Newsmax channel. The owner is apparently opinionated and willing to take the risk of offending potential clientele who find a political opinion like this off putting. First time and it was very good. Very clean, and nicely decorated dining areas. We arrived at 6:30pm and even though it was very busy the wait time was less than 10 minutes for table for 4. Wait staff were smiling and friendly. Once we ordered, our meals were served piping hot to table within 15 minutes. Sizzling fajitas, jumbo shrimp quesadilla, Mexican platter(crunchy taco, pork tamale, chili Carne asada) , cheese nachos. Fresh homemade guacamole, and salsa with warm chips. There aren't many options in this small town, but I really cannot recommend this restaurant. First impressions - designed and built in the 1970s with no updates since. Mexican tile floor, chunky wooden furniture, garish paint, menu stuck in that period as well. They featured fajitas so I thought I'd try the chicken variety. Often with fajitas a big part of the flavor comes from the caramelizing onions and peppers. The skillet sizzled for about 15 seconds after being set on the table. It cooled off before the onions, very thinly sliced, cooked. The chicken was cooked, but there was little browning which adds flavor. If this dish contained oregano, garlic or any other spice I didn't taste it. It even lacked salt and pepper. It was accompanied with about 2 tablespoons of guacamole (which may have been frozen), finely sliced iceberg lettuce, 4 or 5 chunks of underripe tomato and about 1/2 cup of bland rice and refried beans. Perhaps charging only $12.04 (including tax) is the problem. I'd certainly pay a dollar or two more if the food were better, but if tonight's meal was typical I'd look elsewhere. read more

Golf trip at Dancing Rabbit with two others. Found this place on Yelp. Had guacamole, pic of margaritas with two shots of patron added, cheese and three different menu items. Finished with sopapias. If no stars were an option that is what I would have chosen. First, the cheese dip is water. We sent that back then the salsa came out and tasted like pizza sauce. The kid ordered fajitas and waited approx 7 mins before tortillas were brought to the table. My father n law's beans were burnt. We did not have the same person come to the table. After our food was delivered I literally had to wave my napkin in the air to get the kid his tortillas. HORRIBLE Then a guy came by and asked if everything was okay and I proceeded to tell him what was wrong. He LAUGHED and walked off! I'm beside appalled. The ticket was $43 and some change. When I questioned what all was on the ticket at the counter the little girl was on her phone and never looked up until I said excuse me. Come to find out the ticket was WRONG. It should have been $40.08. I know it's not much but what if they did that to every ticket that comes thru the door each day?! I WILL NOT EVER COME BACK. read more

Old Mexico is a great place to sit, talk, and eat. It's very popular at dinner so you might have to wait about 10 minutes, but it's worth it. I've had two birthday parties here - no issue with parties of 10+! My favorite thing to eat are the nachos. read more
