Always smiley, friendly and often cheeky, the people who work here are fantastic true-Londoners and I always leave with a smile on my face. It also happens to be quite cheap; I bought a couple of oranges, bananas, apples and leeks for less than £2. The addition of eggs is also welcome, I bought 6 free range eggs for 95p. If you are in the area and need anything fresh, definitely come here.
Dean and Perry Jenkins has a real farmer's market feel to it, as opposed to a regular corner shop -…read morepossibly because much of the fruits and vegetables are set up outside the shop, and everything looks nice and fresh. There are actually signs by each item saying whether they have been imported from other parts of England or other countries. Inside, there's some basic groceries: eggs, dairy and snacks; along with a table of freshly-made cookies, brownies and bread. Mmm. The cookies yesterday were little, iced gingerbread men. Another highlight: one shelf displays jars of honey that have been made here in Sussex. Although the shop is small, it seems to be quite popular. It was the busiest on George Street, and took some good manoeuvring to make it all the way through. If you're in the area, it's a good place for fruits and veg. And fresh bread.

Yet, unlike some inexpensive fruit and veg stands.. where you feel like you'd have to scrub the skin off your produce before you'd be convinced it was sanitary enough to eat... Ali's, wonderfully, doesn't feel cheap... there's nothing dingy or unclean about the place... everything is kept tidy and orgnanised and beautifully stacked. The other thing that keeps me coming back here is the shop's proprietor. He is always smiling and courteous - and well, one of those kindly sort of people that you just *want* to buy from... again, try finding someone like that at Tesco's HQ!

I was chatting to the owner and they make a trip up to London daily to get their stock and everything is always very fresh. The prices are comparable with the supermarket, but you may end up paying a little more if you use the greengrocer. Still, there is always a better quality of product here and you know it hasn't been sitting around in a supermarktet cold room for a couple of weeks before going onto the shop floor. They also sell a number of natural drinks like ginger beer and dandelion and burdock (one of my faves). I imagine that a number of the local restaurants would be using this place for their fruit and veg and this really can't be a bad thing. Rather than stop off at a newsagent for a chocolate bar, you wouldn't go wrong to pick up something from here instead.
