We are visiting from out of town. We are on our way to drive Skyline Drive. We wanted to try a restaurant that was not a chain. We were glad we choose this restaurant. The burger was great! Homemade burgers are my favorite. The staff is friendly. Place was clean. Atmosphere is good for kids. My kids were able to find things on the menu they enjoyed. The corn nuggets were really good. We haven't ever had them before. I like that they use cheddar cheese on their items. Some restaurant use nacho cheese on certain things like cheese fries or nachos but they don't. Glad I saw the sign on the interstate, realized it was not a typical chain restaurant. If you are Looking for good home cooking, and great hospitality, we suggest you try Old Salem Cafe. My husband had the meatloaf sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy (the meatloaf was seasoned to perfection and the mashed potatoes were homemade) my daughter had nachos, which were great, not soggy at all. I opted for chicken tenders which I must say we're tender and juicy, as well as flavored. Definitely tagged on my map if we ever head back this direction. The food is mainly frozen food cooked in the back. Not fresh or flavorful. Staff is nice but patrons are loud and distracting.

After seeing mixed reviews on Old Salem I decided to give it a try. I have now been there twice (once for breakfast, once for dinner) Love the family style atmosphere, and homely feeling that the place puts off. Good Breakfast - Everyone knows Kevin, the breakfast cook. He's been a grill man long enough to know how to cook you breakfast. Just be specific with the waitress, and Kevin has your back; For example, If you like your toast kinda dark, then just say so. No surprises here, just real good ole breakfast. Lunch - This is the least inspiring. Lunch is average burgers and sandwiches. Dinner - Surprise! The best nachos ever. I mean THE BEST NACHOS. NOT FROM A BAG! AND, - terrific quesadillas. I don't even eat quesadillas, because they're always soggy white things. Not here. These are crisp, hot and golden. - Great blackened catfish, - good old salem chicken wings, - fresh made soups, - a tasty chicken rollatini in a good cream sauce (this one really surprised me). - fried oysters and frogs legs too I recommend you check the dinner special board, or ask them to fry or blacken some catfish for you. 1 star is to high for this place. Somehow my negative review got erased. Don't be fooled by the friends of the owners with the positive reviews. My wife and I ordered the world famous chipped beef gravy and biscuits made by Kevin. The biscuits were hard as stone and the gravy was cold, tasteless, and meatless. Maybe you like the taste of flour and water! 3 waitresses standing together talking while we waited 15 minutes to submit our order. We won't be back! Kevin the cook needs to fry 1 more hamburger and retire. Microwave chip beef in the frozen section of the grocery store has 10 x the flavor! read more

Moved to Marshall last November. Every time we go in it feels as if everyone is part of one big family! It's so welcoming and the food is wonderful! This is why we decided to go in for our 3 year wedding anniversary. Monday is build your own burger day, and it was literally THE BEST BURGER I HAVE EVER HAD!!! I love their fried pickles and my almost 2 year old daughter LOVES their tuna melt and fries. Our server, Lindy, was exceptional. She was so personable. I felt like I was having a yummy meal with the entire restaurant. It's like living in a Cheers episode. :-) This is where we take any visitors from out of town to show off Marshall! My wife and I met some friends here for lunch. We both ordered grilled cheese sandwiches and we asked them to add turkey. The place was almost empty (maybe one other sat table) but, unfortunately, they still forgot the turkey in both sandwiches. We brought it to the attention of our waitress, Anna. (She was attentive!) the response from the kitchen was that they would send out the turkey on the side and we could add it in ourselves. Needless to say, you try ripping open a pressed, grilled cheese sandwich to add something inside and it just becomes a shredded mess. Not to mention the turkey looked like it just can out of a lukewarm microwave. It wouldn't have been hard to offer to remake the sandwich. We ordered some bread pudding to make up for the half-eaten, lackluster meal. The bread pudding was super good! Two stars for Anna and the bread pudding. read more

We had a great dinner experience at the Old Salem. Only regret is that after living in Marshall for a year we didn't stop in sooner. I had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and Julie had the Old Salem burger with onion rings. Very, very good and we are looking to stopping back for breakfast. The food price and taste were ok BUT the rail liquor and one shot were $8.50 and $7.25! That is more than any place in a 20 mile radius! Also, it is a tiny place where we still had to get up for the check and to pay, so we grossly overtipped. read more

Nice selection of breakfast all day and lunch items. Kids meal breakfast pancakes were the perfect portion for our hungry five year old.

Tried to have breakfast. Took 5 min for them to acknowledge we were there. We got our drinks, coffee and water and my coffee cup had red lipstick all around it. We then sat for another 10 min while our waitress talked with another waitress about what they did on the 4th of July. We paid for the coffee and walked out. Won't be back. read more

The new cook, Kevin is a local treasure. The food has greatly improved and I found the service efficient and friendly. This is diner food, period. You won't find anything out of the norm, and healthy options are few. I have been going to the cafe for quite some time. I rarely go for breakfast because I have NEVER gotten my eggs over medium as I order them. I end up with a pile of yucky , raw whites. Lunch and dinner is great. Their fried chicken is wonderful and the homemade meatloaf is better than mine! Service is iffy depending on who waits on you. Jodi is great but most of the others never come and ask if your meal is ok until you are almost done or when they come to pick up the plate and give you your bill. read more

Definitely not a restaurant of choice. We decided to give it a try again, this time for breakfast, (6/6/15) especially since we heard that the chef had changed. The basket of butter that stays out on the table all day should be a clue... we asked if the biscuits were made there, and the waitress told us no. I ordered decaf, and it was just horrible, and I couldn't wait to go to the coffee shop in town. I ordered eggs benedict with home fries, it arrived with grits instead. I was quickly supplied with home fries, but it's as though no one there knows what salt and pepper is, as nothing had any seasoning. My hubby ordered an omelette, had no seasoning, and used sliced sandwich meat for the ham. It was nothing to get excited about. Marshall still doesn't have a good place to eat breakfast, forcing us to go to Warrenton or further to find some place to eat breakfast. read more
