When I was a child in the Penrose Community, we had an old Country Store. It was on Old US Hwy 64 in front of the Saw Mill. I can remember going there with my Father as a Child and getting a Ginger Ale out of a rather old vending machine. There was a pot belly stove and a large porch with rocking chairs and there were always four or five guys there just "chewing the fat". One of those guys was always my Great Uncle Fayd. The above is a little off the point but when I walked in, I was reminded of this store immediately. Granted it does not have a pot belly stove nor does it have a large porch but the feel in the same. This Store is located off of Beatty's Ford Road just before it intersects with NC Hwy 73. Rather easy to get to. Along the front and side, there are bins of produce, and the produce is always fresh. They do have one thing that I have never seen before. The have zip lock bags and baskets that you can fill up with certain vegetables for a set price. Don't remember what the price of the basket was but the bag was $6.00. The inside is a throwback in time. Common food staples are available but also some hard-to-find items like Blenheim Ginger Ale (same as the Ginger Ale in that Penrose Store of my childhood). Great selection of pickles as well. There is a large selection locally produced soaps, pies and honey. Folks there are very friendly just like the folks at that Old Store ;in Penrose NC. A nice little business most of the year(it closes after Christmas for a few months). Spring through early fall the outdoors portion of the busing features a nice variety of inconsistent quality fruits and vegetables. These are largely replaced with pumpkins towards Halloween and Christmas trees by Thanksgiving. The inside of the store is my favorite part. Lots of local products such as relishes, pickles, four bean salads and honey. Also some good flavor enhanced olive oils. But the best is found in the freezer: wonderful frozen pot pies and other small batch foods. read more

I really don't care how good the produce is, or how cute the store is When you enter a place and feel totally unwelcome that's reason enough to stay away. I'm no sure who the senior female is that was there, but she is definitely not happy when customers arrive. I was practically grunted at and couldn't wait to leave. The Old Store is like taking a step back in time to the stores 50-60 years ago. The owners know my wife and I by name and they know more about this area then anyone I have met in the last seven years. This is our second year doing the produce CSA. They load us up with so much food that our family of five still struggles to eat it all before the next weekly delivery. We also get our Christmas trees there every year. The trees may be a little more expensive than from the big box stores, but they deliver and set up the tree for free. On top of that, I have yet to have one get a single brown needle/branch. read more

Such a nice lady and such a nice place to pick up local produce. But listen, not just that. They also sell top olive oil and balsamic vinegar's. They are a better quality and value than those in Birkdale. They also have pies and some frozen pies but I have not tried them. I did however get some veggies and a beautiful autumn flower pot for my house. but the cherry on top was the sweet lady behind the counter. Friendly like all store owners should be and made us feel welcome. We will be stopping again. Wish I had seen the 10% of before I got back in the car. Next time I will make sure I use it read more

The owners are absolutely awesome! The chicken pot pies and beef are terrific so is the fruits veritable and I even bought my Christmas tree there this year. It lasted 5 weeks and did not die! They have great bacon and little odds and ends from garlic infused olive oil to even some great chocolate. For a local business it is great and a must try as the prices are super affordable and they treat all 3 of my kids with a good family feeling! Will ship here for years to come. read more

Try to stop by here on a semi regular basis if I'm heading to or from Denver for something (like cheap gas!). They have a nice selection of produce and specialty products from local farms and producers. This old store has a little bit of everything, from fresh fruits and veggies, to a wide selection of oil and vinegar's, to even bait. The husband and wife team that run the store are friendly as can be. It's definitely worth a stop next time you're in the area. read more

I stopped by Old Store Produce today. It has been a while since I've been here. My primary reason for stopping by today was to take a closer look at the hanging plants. The wandering jew caught my eye - $15; it is a beautiful green hanging plant. I am still on the fence about purchasing one because they require daily waterings. The store sells fresh fruits and vegetables. The watermelons and veggies looked good but the strawberries were wilted. I went inside to peruse the items and there was a lady behind the counter on the phone...she didn't bother to get up from her low seat so I finished looking and kept my questions to myself. Back outside, it was a gentleman (son perhaps) who answered my questions. I am actually giving Old Store Produce 3.5 stars out of 4. If you see something you like, stop by and pick it up. We love shopping at Old Store Produce! It truly is a family-owned store, and it's nice to pop in for a few things, and chat with the owners. They feature almost all local food items, and in the summer much of the produce is from their farm. You can also find local eggs, salsa, jams, pot pies, bread, and many other items. read more
