I appreciated the quirky ambiance and unique menu combining traditional Chinese dishes with a Texan fusion flair. We ordered the hot and sour soups to start , followed by the incredible brisket fried rice, kung pao chicken, and a side of green beans. The soup was served hot and was absolutely delicious. The brisket fried rice was phenomenal and should not be missed. Kung pao chicken was okay (I didn't like that they deep fried the chicken). Green beans were flavorful. Service was good but you have to ask for utensils if you can't use chopsticks and it took them a while to get us spoons/forks to eat with. Overall a solid meal and good experience. Came to Old Thousand because of the hype on social media, big mistake. It wasn't busy, yet we stood there waiting to be acknowledged. When a server finally came over, she walked us to a table, slammed the menus down, and walked off. Rude for no reason. Food was just as disappointing. The rangoons were good. My husband wanted orange chicken but it wasn't on their brunch menu, they were kind enough to still make it, which we appreciated. It was good, but everything else? No. The "mala fried chicken" was basically chicken nuggets with steamed rice, the menu said it had chili oil, I expected it to be drizzled over the chicken but instead was sitting at the bottom of the bowl. I didn't notice it till the end and since I thought they had forgotten it, I asked for some and got just the oil. Idk if that's the way they do it, but usually when I ask for chili oil I receive the chili flakes with the oil. Anyways, it was mid. But the brisket fried rice..... now, that had zero flavor. Mak, Jam, Harrison, and the crew are why I keep coming back. Great local energy, consistency, and they elevate every visit and the music vibe is fire. Adding protein to the noodle dishes is a huge win and keeps me coming back. I would love to see more options like beef, chicken, shrimp, and especially brisket in noodle dishes. A customizable bowl with rice or noodles, vegetables, protein, and sauce would also be a great addition and strong value. Major miss: the egg roll. This Chinese restaurant is located in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Austin. It's a great vibe to go to with friends if you want comfort Chinese cuisine but also want a cocktail or two. I was very impressed with the brisket fried rice but I felt the pork dumplings lacked flavor. Unfortunately, this was a case of Austin overhyped for me. Saw many great reviews and people talking about this spot before and wanted to try it. The reality turned to be a gentrified and repackaged Panda Express. A warning sign should have been when boyfriend's barber said she didn't recommend it. We decided to check it out anyways... The lunch menu was very limited and felt very inauthentic. We settled for some small apps (but personally I was okay to just leave lol) and had actual meal somewhere else. At lunch, on a Saturday, Old Thousand has a limited brunch menu. We didn't expect this but we're flexible - no biggie! My husband kept it classic with the General Tso's and was really pleased with it. I got the chicken and waffles. The bubble waffle was cut into individual bubble pieces and layered in a bowl with the fried chicken, syrup, and something similar to the General Tso's sauce. It was unique, but the waffle pieces just soaked up grease and syrup at the bottom of the bowl. I wasn't able to eat very much because of the amount of oil - not super appetizing and definitely not what I expected. I would have preferred the waffle separate or at least the option to apply my own syrup. Our service was good and we got our food quickly. The restaurant is very attractive, but could be cleaner. This place was really a 3.6 or less.... Came here for lunch and the menu was quite limited with a lot of basic items where it almost felt Panda Express like. And I'm not saying that because it has a panda with a crown on it. So instead we just decided on a snack instead of a full meal. When the pickled cabbage was better than the rangoons something might be up. The food wasn't bad but the rangoons were just average and kind of small. The prices here were also average. Holy hell, across the board, AMAZING food. I can't emphasize enough how good the mapo tofu was especially! It's different from the norm because it uses crispy, fried tofu cubes rather than soft. It's spicy in a way that's more flavorful than hot, with plenty of mouth-numbing Sichuan peppercorns. Plus, it's loaded with meaty mushrooms rather than pork; that makes it vegan by default! One of our good friends came into town over the weekend and Old Thousand is his favorite restaurant so we made reservations earlier on Sunday for our party of 4 at 6pm. My sister in law decided to join at the last minute and although, I couldn't update the reservations online to 5, the hostess was kind enough to find us a different table, we just had to wait a few minutes which was definitely not an issue. To drink, a few of the ladies got the $5 mules and they were decent; my buddy got a drink off the secret menu and he was so happy they still had it. I got a yuzu type drink, everything was really good. To eat, we did it family style. We shared the cauliflower, brisket fried rice, the bao, the green beans, and the fried chicken. The fried chicken had a great spice to it and my only regret was not getting to eat it all for myself lol. Otherwise, and I'm not a huge veggie person generally but the cauliflower was my 2nd fave; the flavor was fantastic. To finish, we had some of the fried donuts. Such a fun experience with some of my favorite people. I wish I could remember the name of our waitress as she did a fantastic job. She was sweet, helpful, and prompt and even had some jokes. This place was on my list for a long time as a classic Austin restaurant (5 years!), but unfortunately I was sorely disappointed by an overhyped Chinese restaurant that seems to be geared towards white people. The dishes are overpriced and underseasoned, and I do NOT recommend subbing tofu for their meat dishes because you get charged the same price for a subpar dish that was barely even good with chicken in it (per my friends). I had the mala tofu and xiao mian. The former had no flavor (fried tofu and rice) and the latter tasted like Maggi instant noodles, flavorful but not worth it. The only thing that was good to me was the ponzu sauce. Do not recommend if you are looking for authentic Chinese food. This is Austin Chinese food. read more

She "sat down" another couple in this manner, and they had to ask her if she wanted them to sit down at the table she placed the menus on. The man that took our order was pleasant to talk to. The brunch menu was limited compared to the dinner menu, so we settled on duck fried rice and orange chicken. The air circulation in the dining room is weak, so it felt stuffy. Nice place! Went on a Friday night with my wife. It was very busy but not packed. The decor is neat, the tables are packed dense but not uncomfortably so. Lots of energy. Everything we ordered for our meal was delicious: Chinese-style jalapeño poppers, dan-dan noodles, Tso chicken. Portions were on the smaller side but prices are so reasonable that it was just fine and gives you the chance to try more dishes. I got the rec from a friend and was surprised to find that they actually do have a lot of parking bc they validate for the lot in the back, plus the neighborhoods have free spots. There are a couple spots directly in front of the place too but they're often filled. The inside is actually quite spacious with lots of tables, a full bar, and clean bathrooms! Our server Olive was very helpful and friendly, and gave good recs. I did get the brisket fried rice because it's so popular and my mom got bubble waffles. We shared them with each other because it was too much food for me and not enough for her - and we both felt comfortably full at the end. We also got the coconut mango panna cotta which was lovely. Not the best panna cotta I've ever had, but it was fun to try. We also got mimosas - mine was grapefruit and my mom requested a more fruity one so they did a passionfruit one for her that was SUUUUPER lovely, I liked hers even better than mine. It was one of the best mimosas I've had actually (and they were only $3 each, omg!). And in total we spent like $50something including tax and tip, so very reasonable!! Honestly im splitting hairs here - i would give 5 stars, but the $5 side of bacon my mom got was embarrassingly small, and the fried rice was a little bit heavy on the oil (i think adding a little more veg would balance it out perfectly, but that's just me!). So it was overall very good, but there were a couple things I think would have made it exceptional. The food was really good. The server was very knowledgeable about the vegan options. FYI there are more options than are marked in the menu, the online menu shows most of the vegan options. We were told all of the chicken dishes could be vegan by subbing tofu and that the panna cotta was vegan in addition to all of the labeled items on the menu. I ordered a meal tonight through the website and didn't receive an item. I have been sick with Covid, and until after delivery and calling 5 times was I greeted with someone that responded with "well we ran out of soup" when I inquired about a replacement, they firmly said no and tried to hang up. I proceeded to ask for a refund and they didn't know and had to put me on hold, where the proceeded to say "sure" and swiftly hang up. Everything was plated so nicely and had creative and flavorful sauces. Old Thousand is a typical Asian restaurant, the food and service is fine. The reason for this is poor customer service regarding the parking situation. The lot behind is monitored by the Austin Parking Company, a very aggressive parking company which is very quick to slap on a parking boot. It costs over $100 to get the boot removed. The signs in the parking lot are minimal at best and I missed it, my fault. However, Old Thousand had a small QR code at the front of the restaurant which would have resolved this. There was no sign and no mention of this. Do they realize how many useless QR codes are posted at restaurants? If Old Thousand really cared about their customers there would be signs posted and the servers would actually warn the customer of the boot policy of Austin Parking. I would be very wary of any place that shows such little regard to their customers. Go to a strip mall Asian place, the food and service is similar and there isn't a $100 surcharge. read more

My favorites were the sweet potato glass noodles, orange chicken, and brisket fried rice. A few other things were too spicy for me. I was pleasantly surprised that they gave her birthday doughnuts with a candle. Afterwards, they had us take a polaroid and put it on their wall of birthday photos, which was really cute! Came on a Sunday night and was seated right away. I was in the mood for noodles and the xiao mian was the most delicious peanuty noodle dish I've ever had. Would come back just for those. We also tried the wok fried green beans which had a unique flavor that we loved and they were cooked perfect. For entrees, we tried the orange chicken and the salt and pepper tofu. The orange chicken was pretty citrus forward and less like the typical sweet orange chicken but was still very enjoyable! One of the best new discoveries we had this month in downtown Austin. Great and easy location close to Nickel Bar and Loud Mouth (both great options for drinks or pizza respectively), they do offer free parking on the back lot just have to scan the barcode at the restaurant entrance using the parking app BEFORE paying or registering your car. The food was really tasty with great options for everyone in your group. Very energetic ambiance great for dates and family gatherings. I love how many vegan options they have. I've been twice, once for a regular menu and once for Restaurant Week. The drinks are tasty and the food is very flavorful. The restaurant had good music as well. The staff has been knowledgeable and friendly, although both times I wished they would check in more often when we needed things. The Buddah's Delight is by far one of the best noodle dishes I've had at a Chinese restaurant, it was super flavorful and the perfect mix of sweet and tangy.
