The 1908 Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne, MA inspired the 1996 addition of flower baskets and boxes to the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge in Simsbury, which in turn inspired the 2015 addition of flowers to what is now known as the Canton Flower Bridge. The bridge is actually a section of the boardwalk along the Farmington River Walk on River Road in the Collinsville section of Canton. The bridge parallels the Farmington River, and on today's gorgeous summer day we saw at least ten groups of adventurers enjoying the water, in kayaks or on paddle boards or on rafts. The boardwalk was full of activity today -dog walkers, bicyclists, carriage pushers and folks just out getting some exercise and upping their step count. The bridge is decorated with hanging baskets and flower baskets that are maintained by volunteers. Another nice feature is the dozen or so placards highlighting some of the land and sea wildlife creatures that inhabit the river environment. What a lovely oasis of color and peaceful water scenery.

On one side you will see the Farmington River and on the other, you can see the road. There are signs on the bridge detailing what type of wildlife lives around the river. I like reading each one, nature is beautiful. Once you cross the bridge, there is a park like area with benches. There are plenty of pedestrians using this area and it's a nice place to get some exercise and fresh air!

Raffle tickets are sold for the houses and or scenes created as well as other items donated by local stores and businesses. The museum uses this as one of several fund raising events throughout the year. At the close of the event, raffle winners can pick up their items in plenty of time to feature them at home as part of their Christimas seasonal decorations. 2024 is the 14th year of this tradition; it is well worth a perusal as the quality of the displays are exceptional. You could totally take the Silas Deane to 91 North, get off at the Route 3 North exit, take that to Route 2 East, quickly get all the way over to the left, take the left exit (Number 7) onto Route 17, and then connect up with southbound Main Street, which will get you to K&B. You could do that, but I've got an idea for you. You could type "Ferry Park" into your phone GPS and head down to the Rocky Hill side of the oldest continuously operating Ferry in the US. Sure, it will set you back about $5-$6, but you may see a bald eagle soaring over the Connecticut River. Or a sail boat. Did I mention you'll be taking a boat ride . . . while sitting in your car? How cool is that? And you know what happens when you get to the other side? You're in South Glastonbury, basically right near both the K&B Farm on Tryon Street and the K&B Farm stand on South Main Street. There are various activities near both sides of the Ferry Stops. There's great birding and photography opportunities on both sides. There's a short trail loop with historical lessons on signs on the So. G. side. You could bring a picnic meal or a coffee and just watch the River happenings. Make sure you check the Schedule before you go. But go, you should.

Would you believe that somewhere…read morein the US of A you can find a ferry crossing that has been providing unbroken public transportation service since 1655? That's not a typo -that is indeed 1655! That's over 350 years! Well, since a time that preceded the Declaration of Independence by 120 years, that ferry has crossed the CT River to connect the towns of Rocky Hill and Glastonbury, CT. A plaque from the CT Historical Commission reads: Nation's oldest continuously operating ferry. Since 1655, public transportation across the Connecticut River has been provided at this site, connecting the towns of Rocky Hill and Glastonbury, both formerly parts of Wethersfield. Motive power has been supplied at various times by poles, oars, a horse treadmill and a steam engine. Privately operated for 260 years, this ferry became a State facility in 1915. It is now operated by the State Department of Transportation. Crossing time, 4 minutes. State of Connecticut Department of Transportation in cooperation with The Connecticut Historical Commission 1973 It's a 2-sided marker with the same inscription on both sides. It's located at the entrance to Ferry Park with a ship's anchor displayed on the side facing the street. Ferry Park is a pretty area with waterfront access. I saw several crew boats sculling in the river on the afternoon I visited.

Or in other words, he saw value in unifying the country through singular coded spelling choices, including ditching some British spellings. This suggestion for "tung" never caught on though. It's not a big house, but they do provide a video background and an iPad introduction where in each room you can play audio on the family, the room, and other background information. Since we were the only ones there, playing the audio was great. If a bunch of people were there, individual audio could get annoying. But there was a lot of good information to play as much or as little as needed. There's a small gift shop, and the whole thing should take about an hour. It's a neat little historical site for someone of whom we have all read their work.

The Noah Webster House is a very cool museum where you'll learn all about "The Father of American…read moreScholarship and Education." Of course Noah Webster is most well-known for publishing his dictionary, but he also created the "Blue-Backed Speller," which taught generations of children how to spell and read, and played an integral role in advocating for copyright reform. Here's the scoop on this interesting little museum in West Hartford: The museum is open Monday-Sat, 1-4PM. Adult admission is $14. The museum is actually the location of Webster's childhood home. Parking is available on site. Once inside, you will receive an iPad, which will guide you through each room in the house. You can also use your smartphone to scan a QR code and download the tablet tour on your phone. There is a short 15-minute film about Webster's life that you can watch prior to starting the self-guided tour. You can then use the iPad to navigate your way from room-to-room, and the iPad includes an audio narration about the room, what it was used for, etc. Photography/video is allowed. After finishing the tour of the house, there is an educational/demonstration room that you can visit where staff give various presentations on different topics. The day I went, a staff member was demonstrating how the Webster family used to card and spin wool. It was pretty cool! These demonstrations are part of the museum's "Life on the Webster Farm: Work Days" educational series, and are generally the second or third Saturday of each month (visit their website for the full list of dates). Before leaving, you can check out the gift shop which has Noah Webster and West Hartford souvenirs and memorabilia. After I finished at the museum, I took the short drive to Blue Back Square, which I learned was named after Webster's "Blue-Backed Speller." There you'll find a statute of Webster in front of the West Hartford Public Library, as well as the "Webster Walk" with various murals and artwork. Overall, a very educational experience about one of our nation's Founding Fathers!

A hidden gem in Connecticut! For $10 a person (adults) you…read moreget a 30-45 min tour of this historic landmark. A tour guide will take you down into the caves/mine. The site itself is free, it's just the tour that isn't. There are several little activities to do, explore the ruins, learn who was at the prison and why. It is amazing! Note: the caves/mine is not accessible (for obvious reasons.... It's a literal underground mine) there are stairs, it is cold and wet, and a 23 degree slope. There are handrails to help with balance. If you're planning on going into the mines make sure you wear closed toed shoes with a good tread.

It's an interesting place and fun to explore the mine. If you're 6 feet or taller, doing the mine is going to be difficult, one of the few times us shorties have an advantage. While it probably wasn't worth the 2-hour drive, it still was a fun time, and not something I regret doing.

The Old Stone Schoolhouse, at Red Oak Hill and Coppermine roads, was a schoolhouse from 1790 to…read more1872. From 1875 to 1956, it was used as a chapel. The building is now owned by the Farmington Historical Society. Exhibits feature the history of Farmington and the surrounding area. It is open for tours each summer on Sundays during July and August. It is also the site of the annual Scarecrow Contest held in October.
