Yes, it's old, and yes, it's small (actually one of the reasons it's so special: I seem to remember hearing somewhere it's the smallest surviving theatre Frank Matchem built). However, it is really unique and has a character that I think exceeds that of the bigger theatres in London's west end. There is a real feeling of history, added to by the beautiful architecture and interior design. The small size means you get a decent view wherever you sit, and they have a good range of shows - from music tribute acts to serious dramas, comedy and pantomimes! The theatre also has a good (though rather miniature) cafe, and does sell absolutely fantastic ice cream during the intervals. Only small complaint is that they could do with a few more toilets to avoid the queues!

The sound quality was good for us as we were fairly near the front. Nice little bar area, pretty basic but good quality products. The staff are friendly and efficient. Drinks can be pre ordered for the interval and the system works efficiently. Lovley little kiosk selling sweeties,popcorn etc and not at over inflated prices. A lovley Theatre which is gradually being refurbished sympathetically. Loads of Parking nearby. Would definitely go again.

The room was like an oventhere are no fans or air conditioning and the windows don't open. There were so many people in there, it was so so hot. The decor in the bar is vile. This is a beautiful theatre and to me, should be decorated in rich colours to show the Victorian splendour, not disgusting plain green colouranyway thats just my personal taste. The theatre itself is upstairs as you walk in and the bar area, which you have to go past to get there, is pretty good too. Very important when going to see amateur dramatics, of course. The building is Victorian so has the right monumental air about it for such works or the-atre. The stage is really big. One of my favourite memories is seeing Oliver here a few years ago when a friend of a friend simply owned the stage on his own as Fagin. They also have a lot of music on here, boasting past performances from no less than Elbow (who are from the town), Joy Division and the Pixies. Not bad, not bad. I'd say grab a drink or bite to eat in the adjoining Automatic restaurant and bar before heading in for some home grown entertainment in the Met.

Lawrence Batley Theatre deserves a mention because it often gets overlooked in comparison to the…read morebig Yorkshire powerhouses like the Alhambra and the Leeds Grand etc, but I find the Lawrence Batley Theatre to be such a hidden jewel in the theatre crown that it deserves a write up. It's not the largest of theatres, but it certainly has a special something about it, especially at night, the courtyard when it's all lit up is beautiful. In addition it truly is a lovely place to go and get involved with the various artsy, poetic, literature things that often happen here. I've seen a few productions here, and I thought they benefited from the smaller venue size, without being overbearing in the sound department. There are three main spaces, the main stage, which is grand, the cellar stage, which is a host to comedy nights and performances, and then the courtyard. The Courtyard is grand for a pre-show beverage should the weather be kind to you. Ticket prices run cheaper than the larger theatres too, which is always a bonus when you're in the mood for cultural enlightenment on a budget. Also, in my student days, if there was a show on that night, if I went in during the day and there were seats available, I was provided with best seats available for £3 a ticket. If you don't get there on the day, save the risk, then student discount and other concessions are available. Oh I almost forgot, LBT is part of the Free theatre tickets for under 26 year olds scheme; A Night Less Ordinary. So seriously take advantage.

However the you look through the programme and there is rarely anything you'd want to pay to see.They recently had the Nighty Boosh on and could could have sold it out ten times over but no one seems to amke an effort to get big or well known names. The website is always out of date and is poorly designed the ticket purchase part is particulary bad.

I've heard nothing but good things about this place and I plan on visiting many times over. I'm already planning on going back to see Hair and Christmas Cracker over the coming months. They've started offering relaxed performances which makes this place a lot more accessible for those with kids or for individuals with autism for example. Big thumbs up. The interior is gorgeous, exposed brick walls with big cosy armchairs. Shabby chic with lots of quirky furniture - have a go on the saddle stools! There's a bar on site and the engine room café offers a pre theatre menu :) What more can you ask for.

Left derelict for several…read moreyears, it was obtained by the Northern Ballet School and the Dancehouse Theatre in the early nineties and restored to it's art deco roots. Unfortunately, the Dancehouse's location on the bustling and smoggy Oxford Road means it already looks quite tatty and neglected from the outside. Inside it's more impressive with an intimate theatre, old fashioned cafe bar and 5 dance studios. As my fellow yelpers have noted, the Dancehouse programme seems to revolve around comedy, drama and the occasional gig - which I find mystifying. I saw Kathryn Williams play a truly enchanting show here many years ago and can't understand why the Dancehouse don't book more musicians. The acoustics that night were great and the intimacy of the venue should lend itself well to jazz, soul, folk, country and world music musicians. The Dancehouse's biggest crime however, is that when you look at their current diary there's not a single ballet or dance performance scheduled! To paraphrase Marvin Gaye - what's going on?

The first two are two of the most important things to get right if you are to enjoy a show. I was so uncomfortable the entire time - and even my much smaller friend next to me was struggling with the leg room issue (but I have to say as a tall person I don't recall having this problem in a theatre before, and I have been to a lot). We were both mega dehydrated by the end and desperate to leave for a drink. If people are excited to leave your venue, that's not good. Re the bar issue basically I didn't even get near it the queue was so big and while this normally would not be a big deal to me I was pretty thirsty due to the tropical climate in the main theatre. The downstairs vending machines were also so temperamental that a queue formed there as well as everybody's money kept getting spat out. Given that space is a cafe (in the day?) it would seem logical to hire some more staff and serve drinks there too. If they could take out a few rows of seats and sort the temperature situation this would be a great venue because the stadium seating means everyone has a good view. But given the reviews pointing out the same faults I have go back over 6 years it doesn't seem like this will be happening. As an aside, Josie Long, who I saw here, was brilliant. However I would have to be really keen on the performer to come back here (and if I did would check seating plan carefully because there's a few seats with nothing in front of them).
