Meeting up here for a free walking tour (even though the tour guide did not appear, perhaps because…read moreof the rain), I had a good opportunity to see the outside and the inside of this beautiful church as well as the lovely grounds. The first church was build here in 1803-1807 with the aid of public subscriptions and a government grant. That frame building was enlarged in 1818-19 and replaced by a larger one in 1831. The first incumbent was the Reverend George Okill Stuart, who served from 1800 to 1812 when he was succeeded by the Reverend John Strachan, later first bishop of Toronto. The second church was burnt in 1839. Toronto's first cathedral was then erected on this site but was destroyed by the great fire of 1849. The present cathedral was begun in 1850, opened for divine service in 1852 and completed in 1874. The structure is stunning, the interior is classic and peaceful. It is open to the public and you're welcome inside but please keep in mind as you do so that this is an active church so please be considerate of the other parishioners. The congregation has grown since my last review, and to accommodate a growing congregation, The City Church now has two (2) services on Sunday mornings - one at 9:00 AM, and another at 11:00 AM. The facility continues to be clean and well-maintained. There are wonderful programs for kids and youth. There are also City Groups for adults of all ages, catering to various interests and stages of life, so you definitely have a chance to build relationships and make friends in your church community. Dress code is casual to business casual. The sermons continue to be engaging and applicable to daily living. This is a wonderful community church in the GTA, and caters to all ages and backgrounds.

Farmer Memorial is a nice little church, like a quaint English one which wouldn't be out of place adjacent to the Old Mill or in the tonier neighbourhood of the Kingsway near Bloor and Prince Edward Drive. I've been in this church a fair amount now, since it's a polling station for the federal riding of Parkdale-High Park. The hall in the basement is charming, although I have my doubts as to just how handicapped-accessible it really is. While there's one of those motorized chairs on a rail going along the stairs, it looks pretty old and I've never seen it in action yet.

I loved pastor Joe before he passed away. The people here are so hard working, they make the church…read morethe best they can. They used to have these crazy garage sales and went to Nicaragua to build wells. Now, they are planning to give back to the Seniors that live next door. They have really interesting programs during the week like Alpha and H20 which help people learn about God. If you come to this church, come see me!
