I'd give 0 stars if I could. PSA: The Olympian has the worst customer service ever. On November 25th they took over $114 +/- out of our account. We used to get the paper and wanted to get the Sunday one again, plus I use it in my arting. Here we sit nearly a month later without a single paper or a refund! Since not getting a paper I canceled it on the 12th...today is the 20th and still no refund. They told me it had to be "approved" I had to waste my time trying to get my refund. So disgusted. In the old days it covered local news and we knew our delivery person. Then it was taken over by a big company and the news started covering Pierce and King Counties. ..less local stories. I have not received my paper for days. In the past 9 days, I've received it twice. I keep calling and writing The Olympian and the response is always, "we are sorry, we will double our efforts" and "you can access the news on our website with even more articles". If I wanted just a digital subscription, I would not have paid the higher cost for a hard copy delivered to my house. I recently moved to Olympia from Seattle, and have looked forward to the daily delivery of the local paper. I would love to know if there are any other hard copy newspapers in the area that deliver, because I am getting fed up. I even made a cylinder to receive the paper so that I didn't have to deal with plastic bags that are not recycled here. I installed it under my mailbox so the delivery person would not have to drive down my long driveway. I have to walk for 5+ minutes through the rain to reach my mailbox and the cylinder. Do not subscribe to this newspaper. The Olympian offers one year promotional subscriptions for as low at $79 for one year, but one year later it jumps to more than $250 per year. The problem is they don't notify you it is coming up for renewal. You find out when they charge your credit card. Don't bother to contact them because they will not cancel the renewal. Mclatchy, which owns them does this on purpose to trick people. Plus, the Olympian has the worst app of any online newspaper I have seen. It is old news repeated many times and most of it is copied from somewhere else. Worst online newspaper ever. You cand get the NY Times and Wall Street Journal for $50 per year. Why would you want this very poor news source for $250 plus. Do not subscribe, you will regret it. read more

I have taken The Olympian newspaper and have accessed it digitally off and on for years. I believe in supporting local journalism and I prefer to do that, but it is difficult to do this when their operations are so faulty. I have had many issues with delivery, as others have reported. Missing papers, soaking wet papers, no way of guaranteeing that I was compensated for my missing papers, and the worst experience connected to this operation is when I tried to cancel my subscription. It is close to impossible to do so. To be brief, I was told to email my request to cancel, which I did. Then I was sent another email telling me to click on a link that would allow me to cancel, and if I did not do so, my subscription would be automatically renewed. When I clicked on the link that was provided, I was given numerous options which all related to the problems that might be causing me to cancel, with included links that told me how to resolve these numerous potential problems. I was not given the opportunity to simply cancel. I hunted extensively on the entire website for a link to actually cancel my account, including within my account. There was no place or link where I could actually do so. My only alternative was to call The Olympian on the phone and speak with a representative. This person, obviously doing as she was trained, did everything she could to convince me that I did not actually want to cancel my subscription. It took a great deal of interrupting and convincing this person that I simply wanted to cancel my subscription before she actually did so. I think the employees are at the mercy of a huge corporation (McClatchy) that is training them to use desperate measures to retain subscribers. Perhaps if they improved delivery services, customer service, and the quality of the actual paper, their customers would not be so apt to cancel their service. It is disappointing to have the local paper controlled by such a large corporation that doesn't care about the important qualities of a local news organization. I feel that their business practices are shady and deceitful and I plan on reporting my experience to the BBB and the state Attorney General's office. I feel sad for the journalists who are dedicated to reporting local news to the Olympia area residents and are at the mercy of this corporation. read more

It saddens me greatly to see how low the Olympian has fallen. I pay $112 a month for home delivery and never get a paper. When I do, I am positively depressed at the absence of meaningful content. I want to support local news but these folks are torturing us! read more

I would give zero stars, if possible. I made the mistake of paying by check for a promotional 30 subscription. When that ran out, they continued to deliver and starting making collection calls. We actually, stupidly, resubscribed for 6 months and paid by check from a different account. When that ran out, they set up an automatic withdrawal from the first account and helped themselves to our bank account. We had to file an unauthorized withdrawal complaint through our bank to get our money back. They continue to call, (I am on the federal do not call registry) after numerous requests to be removed from their solicitation list, including going through the Better Business bureau, where they agreed to remove our number from their list. I will be filing a complaint with the FCC and the state attorney's office. Do not do business with this company. read more

Where to start? Firstly, there is no option for zero stars so picture that star as a negative 1, not a positive. It should actually be about a negative 25, but there's not enough room here and that is a genuine shame. We decided not to renew our subscription to the Olympian. Some of the many reasons are: poor quality reporting, ridiculously high pricing on renewals, baffling organizational ineptitude, plus we only got it three days a week anyway (Fri-Sun) and that was mostly for the Sunday ads. There are many other ways to get news in this day and age and all of them more reliable and entertaining than the Olympian. Our subscription ran out; we were done. No one contacted us to get permission to continue; no phone calls, mail, nothing. A few newspapers showed up after I thought the subscription was done but I just assumed (quite reasonably) it was typically poor organization on the Olympian's part. Imagine our enormous surprise a couple months later to receive a COLLECTION AGENCY LETTER for the newspapers we did not want, did not order and had in no way agreed to pay for. A COLLECTION AGENCY LETTER was the ONLY communication from the Olympian. I reluctantly paid the collection agency so it didn't stay on our record. My partner, whose name the subscription was in, went to the Olympian's office but no one could be bothered to talk to him about the problem. Explain this to me. They have my cell phone number; I still get lots of calls asking us the subscribe to the Olympian. They called all the time when we were stupid enough to be subscribers, asking me if we would like to subscribe. These callers had no idea we already subscribed. It was always a complete surprise to them and a total waste of their time, not to mention mine. They still call. Now I just detail the enormous stupidity of their organization, including the gall they had to turn us over for COLLECTION without even contacting us and then ask them to tell their supervisor that someone with the authority to fix their ridiculous mess should call me. No one has ever bothered to call me back. Shocking! Tonight I arrived home to find a promotional flyer in our mail from, guess who, the Olympian. So they obviously still know where we live and can manage to mail us promotional material. Funny that they never mailed us any communication about the newspapers they claimed we owed money for. Anyway, today's flyer says on the outside "We miss you!" (that's so touching!) and offers savings of up to 88%. Are you kidding me? They turned us over to a collection agency for a $ 40 bill we did not owe. We could not get anyone to even talk to us. And they still have the audacity to solicit us by phone and mail and claim they MISS US??? Really, how stupid can they be? PS: For the record, we do NOT MISS THEM or their lousy newspaper. A one star is way too high...I just called to cancel our subscription and their representative argued and argued about cancelling and that next charge would be Sept 26th...NO...I DO NOT WANT ANY MORE PAPERS, DO YOU UNDERSTAND!? And this person was still trying to argue. I will never again subscribe to this newspaper/online subscription and neither should you. To cancel IS NOT as easy as "Click here to cancel your subscription", nope you are required to call the Olympian and talk to their wonderful and helpful representative". We can get better news coverage through other websites and not get charge the $49.00+ a month for 4 Sunday papers and use of their online newspaper. What a rip off!!!!You can find the same Sunday paper at the grocery store for the amount printed on the front page, $4.00. We paid for September in August and they just sent a billing for $2.99 for the paper bill to send a bill for the month we already paid for! To quote a phrase, "Read my lips".... I do not want to subscribe to the Olympian Newspaper and I am not responsible for ANY further charges from today forward. read more

Dirt bags and scam artists. I took pity on the old man outside of Whole Foods in the rain trying to sell papers. I agreed to a 6 month membership. The charged me more than the agreement all 6 months and at the end I emailed them to say I wanted to cancel and cancelled on their website. They then charged me 70 dollars for not cancelling or resubscribing and bombarded me with spam calls from foreign countries to pay it. I talked to a representative and she assured me that she would erase the 70 dollar fee because I had infact cancelled. Now today In the mail I get a letter that instead they sent it to collections. Do not give these dirt bags and scam artist a single cent of your money. They will screw you over every chance they get I wish I could give them one star. read more

Did you know the Olympian customer service call center is in the Phillipines? If you didn't get your paper, if you call after 10am you won't get one? Did you know there is no staff in the Olympia office who can help you with any subscription problems and when they say they will transfer you to someone in the Tacoma office you get the Phillipines again? Did you know there is no staff in the Olympia office who can help you with anything but if you say OK cancelled my subcription, that they can do instantly? Then when you cancel your subscription the paid through date on the renewal sent out by The Olympian isn't the date the Olympian says you're acutally paid through, they claim it's the day before and short your refund? Did you know since the only reason to sign up for delivery is to get a paper to your door, but some carriers can't be bothered to actually get it anywhere near your door, or get it delivered at all, you're better off getting your Olympian at the Dollar Store than signing up for a subscription? Plus is costs less anyway. Just saying you should know. read more
