So here in the middle of the world coming together to celebrate sports and athleticism, terrorists stormed the apartments of the Israeli athletes. Eleven Israeli Olympic team members were taken hostage and killed along with a West German police officer. In attempting to rescue the hostages, police killed five of the terrorists and three were captured. Security in the Olympic village was very low in an attempt to change the military image of Germany. Personnel were inconspicuous and unarmed, unprepared to deal with anything more serious than ticket fraud and public drunkenness. This new memorial was built in 2017 following a long campaign by the relatives and families of the athletes. The exhibition is located beneath a mound of grass and surrounded by lime trees. The column in the center displays the profiles and photos of each of the victims. The LED screen plays a 27-minute loop of news footage broadcast during the events on 1972. A VERY FAMOUS MECHANICAL CLOCK IN MUNICH'S MARIENPLATZ…read more====================================================== My husband and I were walking around the Marienplatz on Friday, April 17, 2026 just before noon and the plaza started filling up with people waiting to see the life-size figures. The show lasts about fifteen minutes and starts daily at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. from March to October. The clock has 43 bells and 32 life-size figures and was added during the completion of the Neues Rathaus or New Town Hall in 1908. We found a good spot to stand and wait on the opposite side of the plaza which was great because we were in the shade. If you ever visit Munich you definitely have to check this out. There are plenty of places to shop or dine nearby.

We brought sandwiches, snacks and water which made for a little picnic. The garden is enormous and beautifully maintained. Wish we had gardens such as this in the USA. I think this may even be bigger than the Central Park in NYC - most certainly safer! We went on a Monday but it was still full of people. From what it seems, it's a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Locals wade into the water and there are even some spots where they surf! I believe there's even a lifeguard in one of the areas. They don't just let anyone surf though and there are some warning signs about its dangers. Hubby and I were able to find a bench in the shade where we just enjoyed the scenery for a while. It was perfect for our jet lag recovery The park is also within walking distance from many other landmarks in Munich, such as The Residence, the Odeonsplatz, Mariensplatz, The Munich Cathedral, among many others.

There's a beautiful river with plenty of waterfront space to relax and even a place to watch surfers practicing. There's a huge beer garden by the Chinese Tower, great for a break or people watching. Eisbach-Welle (ice river waves) had a lot of people queuing on this day and the water is cold and murky - nothing like surfing on Waikiki (I highly recommend this BTW). They looked like they were very disciplined, courteous of one another, and most of all - having a lot of fun. I don't have a thick wet suit and I don't think there is a surf board rental shop here in all of Germany!! So, I think these folks are local and they brought their own surf boards. If there was a rental shop close by, I'd probably give this a try but there are no lifeguards here. Perhaps, they all just look after each other?? FYI, if you haven't surfed, it's like sledding down a hill, it's fun surfing the wave, but to get back out to ride the wave, it's really tiring. But you don't experience that here because it's a standing wave. After a wipe out, the surfers basically went to the bank of the river and back into the queue on either side. After spending some time in Old Town, walk over here and check them out, it's an endless way to check out great form and to dream of being back in Hawaii...

Eisbach-Welle is a popular spot for surfing in the heart of Munich! Located at one end of the…read moreEnglish Garden, surfers surf the waves of the Eisbach river. When I visited in late August, there was a line of surfers on each bank of the river, about 5 surfers deep. Each side took turns surfing the river, 1 surfer at a time. I'd say each surfer spent about a minute surfing before either dropping off or wiping out. There's great views of the surfing from either bank or one could watch on the bridge overhead. At least 100 people were watching when I went. Overall each surfer was considerate of their fellow surfer, in fact you might say they were very mindful and very demure. :P Eisbach-Welle is definitely a fun spot to visit and if you know how to surf, it's definitely worth a try.

Fresh flowers, meats, cheeses, baked goods and fresh baked breads, and of course beer and wine bars. There's something here for everyone and it's always fun checking out all the different booths. I walked over every morning for fresh Cappuccino at Leo's Kaffee and would pick up a pastry at one of the bakeries. In the afternoon, I would stop by the pickle guy and buy a few of the best pickles I've ever eaten. So many choices from sweet to sour, spicy and my favorite a super sour with a spicy horseradish. The long line moves quickly and if you like pickles, you must stop here.
