I worked at the San Diego Zoo doing the bird shows and also was a distributer of exotic birds to various pet shops. I bought my birds from Omar's. Part of the purchase agreement was free grooming. For 27 years I have had free grooming. My recent visit I was charged $32 per bird for grooming with no notice. I love this place, best place to get a bird if you can't rescue one. The people there are so welcoming, I personally love seeing them. As a person with anxiety they don't make me feel nervous. They raise the birds there with a lot of care you can tell when you walk in. When you get a bird they make sure you know what they need. Their bond with the birds are amazing. This store is the most amazing, and I mean amazing, exotic bird store on the west coast. The store is expertly designed in a way to allow the birds to be out of their cages/homes and interact with the customers. I have not been in the store since 2012 because I moved away but I still think about how great this place is and how I still want the blue Hyacanth (sp?) macaw because it is the most exquisite creature I have ever laid my eyes on. I am sad to see that all the birds are sold out but I can understand why since they are so neat. this store features a wide away of toys, treats, and stimulating apparatuses for the cages/birds that will impress any bird enthusiast. They take such good care of their birds. My daughter and I love this place. It's so fun to see all the birds open and playful and you can hold them too! We are getting our cockatiel from them. All the employees are so helpful and attentive. They are very hard-working and kind. All very knowledgeable and have good energy. I definitely recommend getting your bird from Omar's and going there for all of your birds needs. These birds are hand fed from when they're babies and you can tell that the way this place operates they are not just looking for profit. They care. They care more than any other pet place I've seen. Also, Liz (blonde hair) has been very kind and helpful along with all of the employees there! Unfortunately, when I was there the other day, there was an extremely impatient man who was very disrespectful and speaking down to Liz. But she had great customer service and still treated him with the upmost respect and a smile on her face. (Idk how she has the patience lol) but the owner of this place is very lucky to have such amazing employees that are so kind and hard-working and really do love their job. You can just tell. I love how the employees teach everyone especially the children. Teaching children and educating them and being patient is challenging at times, but I have always seen every employee so good with the children, especially with my daughter. my daughter get scared and nervous easily, especially when it comes to new animals. She loves animals, but sometimes she'll be afraid to hold them. When we first went into Omar's, she was excited but nervous to hold the birds and interact with them. And now she's so brave because all of the employees have been so nice and taught her how and gave her the confidence. Now, whenever we go in there, she goes around all of the birds and says hi, pets them, hold them, and with them all on her own! She is brave and confident and has a blast. Highly recommend coming here! This place was so clean and they got fresh food and water! The birds were friendly and definitely cared for! Also for people who do not know but complain the cockatiels are in the tanks because they are babies! They can't fully stand on perches yet they still have balance issues like every baby! Also the dry flaky stuff on their face is bird formula! That's why the food and water are on the ground so they can eat and drink on their own because they can't balance on perches yet. Worst place ever don't buy a bird from here. The first couple of days of purchasing my cockatiel I noticed him having feet problems he was twitching his foot I called Omar's to discuss this and they said they can do nothing about it. Just imagine this bird is only three months old I took it to the vet and it has Apaxia the vet stated that these Breeders breed these birds so much they have these diseases within. Omar's is not exchanging my bird and my bird died. That is not fair and I just wanted to share my experience that thus place is not giving away healthy birds. read more

Very rude girl who works there on Thursdays came in to check out the birds and when I was petting one she just grabbed it from where it was chilling and brought it to another customer to pet but completely ignored me just grabbed without saying excuse me or anything. I'm cracking up about the reviews saying their bird was sick or that all the reviews are written by friends and family. NOT true.... looks like some crazies are upset that they didn't know how to properly care for their bird. Lastly... Omar's employees may come across as stern but with good reason. They really discern who should be owning a bird and who should not. Unlike a dog or cat, a bird is a lifelong companion as well as one of the most rehomed pets due to unrealistic expectations of uneducated buyers. A super cute birds store in lake forest. You can walk inside and you get to see all the birds and interact with some of them. They have a lot of the exotic birds and other little ones. The facility is very clean and doesn't smell bad at all. It does look like they take care of the birds well here or else I would have given it a 1 star and a million complaints to the owner or manager. The birds are practically flying around free inside so if you're scared of birds sitting on your hand or shoulder, this is not a place for you. Be respectful of the birds here and treat them nicely and I'm sure they will do the same to you. read more

This is the place to purchase your new addition to the family. First off I'd like to say this shop is not near my home in fact the Brea location was a lot closer. Although our Green Wing was located here and we immediately bonded with the bird. These parrots are very well taken care of and are extremely healthy. Once we found our bird Kim was very helpful teaching us more about the bird as it was our first time owning a Macaw in particular. We previously had owned an Amazon a few years ago so we chose a Macaw for our next bird. All the birds are very loving and kind here. The birds allow themselves to be touch and held. This place raises them very well and keeps them very happy. Kim was helpful in helping us choose a cage and two stands for our new bird. Best place hands down for any bird needs. read more

I hate going to Omar's; whenever I go I almost always never leave empty handed. Other than that, Omar's is great. I've purchased 2 budgies from them. The birds here are handfed so they're super tame and used to human. The store is very large and they have A LOT of birds for you to play with. All the birds are super cute and eager to play, that I always end up find myself reaching for my wallet. When you purchase birds here, they give you a bunch of freebies. A decently sized bag of foods, bunch of millets, and I also got a free swing. The bird comes with free health check up from the vet they're partner with, though I think that only last like 5 days after purchase. They have multiple stores (this one and another one down in San Diego, maybe more but these are the only 2 I'm aware of) so you can have birds shipped to whichever store is more convenient for you. For example, I bought my bird in San Diego but she just wasn't ready yet by the time school ended and I needed to move out (I live about an hour away east of LA) so I had them ship the bird here when she's ready. read more

I brought my medium sized eclectus parrot in for grooming and the manager was now going to charge me for a large parrot and was very abrupt with me and not gentle with my bird at all. At home she was biting her feet after she used an electric drill to trim down her claws and got way too close and cut her other toes with the fast spinning electric sandpaper. A friend of mine with a parrot sanctuary told me that they have held on to their bird so tight fluid started coming out of its eye sockets because they don't know what they're doing, be very wary of bringing your birds for any type of service because they are not gentle and they do not have the proper training. Take them to your veterinarian if you need help with grooming or boarding. read more

We bought a cockatiel from their now closed Santa Monica store. We've owned cockatiels for 40 years so after three months and no bonding from our hand fed cockatiel we returned the bird. The cockatiel was sold the same day we returned him but we did not get any refund. After much looking we again bought a cockatiel, this time from Omar's Lake Forest location. We always have any new cockatiel checked by our vet. He had a gram stain negative. What this means is that there is an intestinal or respiratory infection. Omar's Santa Monica cockatiel also had the same thing. When we contacted Omars they said they would pay for the vets bill. Omar's Santa Monica did pay the vet bill, however, It took many phone calls and several months before Omar's Lake Forest paid the vet bill. We love our new cockatiel. We recently boarded him at Omar's for a couple of days. We noticed that they had zero cockatiels for sale which is strange since they are also breeders. Not sure why and we got a cryptic response when we asked. Everyone there is friendly and helpful. We will continue to board our cockatiels when on vacation. read more

Initially, I went to the la Brea location and the manager was so kind to let me know that the lake forest location had babies. The management, volunteers, and staff of lake forest is wonderful as well. They were patient, let me hold the birds to see if we were the right fit, explained her diet--and I trust the Omar's reputation of healthy birds, 100 percent. My daughter has been really wanting to buy a parrotlet so we've been researching a lot about bird care. Found out there is this local shop nearby so we went so she could hold some birds and get a feel for how to interact with them. She was so happy to come. The place was very busy and most everyone was wearing a mask (one woman came in to buy bird seed and she wasn't wearing a mask at all despite signage saying "no mask no service"). There were some birds freely sitting on perches and two large tanks with cockatiels. All the cockatiels were crowded in open tanks and were clipped. My daughter held a green bird in the center of the room that sat on an open perch swing, who was very friendly but refused to be let off. It had extremely long nails and scratched the sh-- out of her arm and shoulder and by the time we got home, cleaned it off with antiseptic and neosporin, it became very reddened shortly after. The day after, it is now inflamed and swollen, and it's been painful and itchy the last 24 hours. The birds smelled like fecal matter and all their nails were overgrown, as you could see their toe placement wasn't appropriate due to the very long nails. The store turned us off to buying a bird through them or frankly ever buying bird supplies from there too, as I am not confident in the cleanliness of the whole store considering, which also translates to questionable care for their birds. Millet sprays and giant dishes of food were lying on the bottom of the cockatiel tank while the birds walked all over each other. Their feathers looked bent or tattered and their beaks looked flaky and dry. I really wanted to love our trip to Omar's after reading such nice reviews but I don't feel like this is as reputable as it was made to seem. read more

This is a great place for all bird supplies, birds and just to visit and see/handle exotic birds. I've bought 2 birds from here and they are very healthy, happy birds. I also just purchased 2 cockatiels that will come home in about 1.5 months. They are so tame, cuddly and beautiful. I trust Omar's for healthy birds. The staff is very nice, friendly and helpful. I've been frequenting Omar's for many years. I bought a Meyers parrot at one of their stores once upon a time, and it was a sweet little bird. I have also bought canaries at their store. It's delightful to be able to interact with the parrots who are out all day...but do be careful, you can get nasty bites. In fact I want to be honest with anyone who is reading these reviews thinking of getting a parrot. You need to know having a parrot as a pet is like having an eternal two year old, demanding child who can bite the hand that feeds them and DOES. Really. These animals are extremely high maintenance. They take a lot of care and they take special feeding. You can't just throw seeds at them. They need fresh fruits and vegetables every day, a huge cage, and lots of time outside the cage. They also cannot be ignored, human interaction is very important. Also, depending on who you speak to in the store, the employees can be nice or rude. I've been in there many many times when, as other reviewers said, no one spoke to me. And yes, they do sort of look you over when you come in. There is also some kind of snarky tone from many of the employees, and I have no idea where this kind of attitude comes from. Perhaps they prefer their birds to the people who come in to see them, I don't know. Nice selection of cages, toys and food. Just be prepared for getting a not-too-warm welcome and perhaps a lecture about what you're doing wrong with your bird. read more
