I was pretty impressed the moment I walked through the door by the fact that this is not just a souvenir store. This place has some serious beach and surfing equipment along with skateboards. Yes they have tons of clothing, hats, shoes, eyewear and swimsuits. It's not a huge store,but they definitely pack in some good surfing gear. Only thing I found conspicuously absent was anything to do with fishing. They do have six dressing rooms for you to use. Definitely a good spot to check out if you're into surfing. read more

The "On The Beach" store, in South Padre Island is a genuine modern day "MOM and POP." Owner Glen McKinlay goes out of his way to make things right in a sticky, unfortunate situation. My Faith is Restored in "On The Beach" on South Padre Island. Recently our special needs son purchased a "used" surfboard for $350 with his own money. Unfortunately, he only used the board 1.5 times before the surfboard broke. He used the board the day we purchased it, and a week later on the second day while he was using the board it broke nearly in half at the top 1/3 of the surfboard. I called the store immediately and was later contacted by the Owner Glen McKinlay, who went out of his way to personally call us. He expressed sincere regret for our situation, and he enlightened us on the surfboard industry common practices. Glen took the time to hear our concerns, worked with us to find a reasonable solution, and deal with the broken surfboard. As the owner of the "On The Beach" store he chose to "make things right." He offered options and possible solutions. Glen did not have to contact us, but he chose to take care of his loyal customers and continue the "On The Beach" positive experience and legacy. read more

A very nice surf shop with good quality clothing but has some super unfriendly workers

Young blonde male approached us as we walked into the store. I thought we were going to be friendly introduced and shown around, but instead we were treated like children and as well lied to ..... very sad I had called the shop three times very excited before my fiences first surf trip when comes to find out we can't rent wetsuits possibly cause it's to warm I wanted it for jelly fish protection the guy looked at me like I was crazy Then proceeded to push us out of the store saying they don't offer the things I called three times specifically before coming to make sure they had didn't have we said fine maybe we will just buy the wetsuits and have them the guy laughed at me and my fiancé saying we r crazy in this heat asking my experience with surfing as of that matters long story short we moved here to texas from the west coast hoping to finally find a board shop like I had at home and this wasn't it sucks cause I did really want to buy more surf boards and wetsuits but I will go else where read more

First time visiting this store. It is a beautiful store with all kinds of men's & women's clothing. They sell Yetti products. We bought one along with a cotton T-shirt I liked. The staff is friendly & helpful. Will revisit when we are in South Padre next time. read more

Definitely a good place to go to get some beach wear while in town. It also helped that we got 25% off coupons after demoing some paddle boards. They let me use two of them since my friends didn't end up buying anything so we had extras. A little more expensive than some other places on the island, but really good selection and well laid out, clean, etc. Not full of crappy tourist stuff like a lot of the bigger store down the road. read more

My wife and I stopped at On The Beach looking for an xl or 2xl swim shirt for me. Xl at other beach shops was more like a child's xl. On The Beach carries Patagonia which was exactly what I was looking for. The staff were young but knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I really like this shop and their selection of merchandise - completely different from the big chain beach shop. We plan to stop back. Used to be one of my favorite stores but upon entering with my daughter and my 2 grandchildren we were asked to were a mask by a lady at the desk who was wearing her mask off of one ear while drinking from a tumbler. I stated that I had a medical condition and she wasn't wearing her mask. She said while drinking beverages it's ok. I thought about going outside to get my water from the car but decided if they didn't want our business when clearly no one else was shopping there then I would not spend my money at a shop where such stupidity is practiced. We could have practiced social distancing and that is the science! Masks are a choice and if you can't social distance, you can wear a mask if you choose and believe it protects you. I am also a resident of over 10 years paying very high property taxes. I will never go back. read more

I really love both stores, really good quality merchandise. Though the last time on the island a crazy lady was driving next to us waving and motioning for us to move over (we were in our lane) lo and behold we saw her in the store minutes later and she was the owner. Ok, so let me start by saying that this place has been here since as long as I can remember and that's at least as far back as 1986.. A business that can stick around that long on SPI has to be doing something right.. or I'm sure they would have burned it down for the insurance money long ago.. lol.. (locals will know what i mean). We were researching locally owned stores in South Padre and came across this gem. We were blown away by the level of service by not just one of the employees but ALL of the employees! They seemed happy to be working there. The employees were helpful, offering to look for sizes in the back, friendly with the kids (even tossing a football with them) and the items they carry are top quality (not cheap China stuff).
