They often have coupons for some of the libations I like which make it even more worth the trip. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Upside down, boy you turn me, inside out. Upside down is what this liquor store is famous for. Not just that the spirits will make you feel like you are spinning around upside down, but also that the neon sign is upside down on the building. It's quite unique and awesome. In fact, it Rox. The prices here aren't as cheap as a couple of other places I know, but it's a way better place to buy alcohol than the major stores, and if you're in Amherst, there aren't many better places. I have taken many a UB student here for their alcohol fix, and they've thanked me and shared the knowledge around the campus. But don't tell anyone I said that. read more

Last Saturday night, at almost 10pm, my husband and I were on our way home from dinner. We had a hankering for a particular pinot we both really enjoy for a lovely nightcap at home. But our usual liquor stores were all closed by that later hour. We were just hoping to luck out and find something open on the drive home. Then ... all of a sudden ... like a beacon of hope in the dark, dark night ... On the Rox neon sign lit up the sky ... but more importantly ... the lights from the door shone bright because they were STILL OPEN! :-D So five stars for being open late--but would they come though in the clutch for the wine we desired? When we went in, the hubbs asked the friendly counter staff if they'd heard of 'Bread and Butter Pinot Noir', and all three of them sprung into action! They quickly located the wine we wanted, and it was officially MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! We grabbed two, priced reasonably at $13.49, and checked out with the super staff. I didn't look around a ton while we were in On the Rox, but I will say the outside is a bit deceiving, it is bigger inside than I expected. They seemed to have all of the typical sections you'd hope to find in a liquor store. If you need a later-night liquor store, On the Rox fits that bill! But even if it is not late night, the great customer service, easy parking, and variety are all good reasons to stop in anytime! :-D read more

The sign outside is just my favorite. It's one of those quirky things that I first saw when I started coming here in college and still love to drive by. The selection is quite large and the employees are quite friendly. There isn't a ton of room to move around so if you are a lady who carries a big purse be careful in here.. I've almost taken out bottles of wine just trying to turn around. I like there aren't many frills inside. The goods are displayed nicely, but it doesn't feel stuffy or pretentious to shop here. This also makes me believe that I'm paying a fair price for my alcohol rather than some other stuffy wine/liquor stores where I feel like I am paying an up-charge just to shop there. There are often coupons for 20 an 10% off wines that get mailed to your house in the val-pak coupon envelope. I have also seen some in the Amherst Bee (protip: They keep copies near the exit so check for the coupons before you check out!) read more

Love my convenient liquor store. Great selection for being a small family owned place. Staff is friendly and helpful. If you're lucky, when you stop in they'll be doing a tasting. It's a great way to try something that might be out of your comfort zone. It can get pretty crowded in the parking lot but the turnover is quick. read more

They have a pretty big selection for such a small building. Everytime we go they have whatever we need. The prices aren't too bad, but of course it depends on what you are getting. This store has been open for a really long time and the employees are so nice. When I bought my Honey Meade the other night the employees had never tried it, so I cracked open the bottle so they can try it. So now they not only know what Honey Meade is, but can recommend it to their other clients. Yay! read more

Went to this store to purchase some liquor as I was visiting some colleagues for the weekend. As I walked in, I was welcomed with a glare and eyes following me as I walked around. It didn't really bother me until I got on line to purchase what I needed. A group of Asian kids were in front of me so as I'm minding my own business checking out some wine and waiting to pay, the cashier looks and points at me and says with an attitude, "You and your friends all need to show me your IDs whether you're paying together or separate." Excellent. When looking for a liquor store in a town you are not from, always ask the locals where to shop, because they are likely to send you to a place called On the Rox (with an "X") whose sign is upside down (intentionally, I hope). OTR had very reasonable prices and a wide selection of spirits and wine. We quickly found the bourbon we were looking for, paid, and were headed out, when all of the sudden, we spotted a lady offering samples. Well, when in Buffalo... Yes, the samples were of a horrible bourbon with peach and raspberry flavorings. But they were free, and we ended up having a lovely conversation with the lady serving, who was 51 days from finishing nursing school, and found our comparison of her product to Dimeatap hilarious, save for the fact that Dimeatap is a thousand times better. I don't plan on returning to Buffalo any time soon (2005 was the last time I was there), but I'd swing by OTR should I need a nightcap at my barless hotel. read more

I've been going to this liquor store for years and quite frankly it does the same for me that a Premier does. Okay, maybe Premier has a bigger selection with the new addition/angel of having local products available for purchase, but On the Rox gets the job done. All the workers are extremely friendly and they know your face and eventually your name. Thats the kind of customer service I like. It's location is convenient, theyre open late which makes them a great spot to hit on the way to a friend's house before going out, and they have everything you need, including a selection of chilled bottles. I love On the Rox. My family and I have been going here for a few years. I think the customer service is incomparable - within 1 minute I'm always asked if I need help finding anything. The selection is solid and they have some very unique items (coconut lemongrass sake, anyone?). The prices are consistently lower than others I've seen, and if you have a coupon - even better. They also do 20% off a mixed case of wine which is great if you're a wine lover, also really convenient around the holidays. Personally, I like the selection of local and organic wines they offer. Overall the place has a great selection of wine and liquors, staff is always friendly and helpful if need be. The pricing isn't bad in comparison to Caputi's down the street but one thing I love about this place is that it's always open later than every liquor store near by. It's my goto spot on Sunday's when everything closes early! read more
