Our recent visit to restaurant OX in Helsinki was a real feast for the eyes, as well as the palate…read more The restaurant serves bistro style food from ingredients from the season and the wine list features small producers also from the biodynamic movement. The small restaurant is rather new in town, located on the edge of the center and Punavuori. The ambience is warm and welcoming when we stepped into the restaurant. Fall was creaping on us and I felt very comfortable in the cozy little corner table. While waiting for our dinner company, we browsed through the list of available bubblies by the glass: Philipponat and Fleury Rose were the choices of the evening. When our friends arrived, we realized we could have ordered a bottle. The list by the glass was sufficient but nothing to get excited about. The menu gave us two options: either go for a surprise menu, or choose dishes from a la carte. Tricky, as well all wanted the tasting menu, but there were several picky people in the dinner party: my date with his dislike for sea food, my friend E who does not eat mushrooms and J, who is just picky because he can (why make up any excuse for that). The waiter was kind enough to tell us what was on the surprise menu, so that we could make our order. We went for a mix, my date choosing a la carte, and me going for the surprise. The boys ended up browsing the wine menu for a long time before settling for the Printz von Hessen 2002 Riesling. I take it as there were so many good alternatives to select from. For food we had some lovely lamb tartar, pork tongue with beetroot, cabbage soup with kale, and deep fried cod. Mmmm..deep fried, but still very fresh, and some German Spätburgunder to wash it down. However, the desserts were the best: sea buckthorn parfait with chocolate and hazelnut, and lingonberry ice cream with basil cake and strawberries. They were both delicious. The only thing I can give a negative comment about is the service. It was not bad. Not unfriendly. But the waiter just seemed exhausted with all of our questions. We did take a lot of her time with asking about the foods and wine, but still, you could take it that we were just really interested. Perhaps she did not mean anything, but we just didn't feel the love. Anyway. Great experience. Not horrible on the bank account, perhaps we paid 50 something Euros for the five course menu. Beautiful and tasty food! I can warmly recommend.

When I heard that there's a restaurant with the audacity to call themselves "Grotesk", I had to try…read moreit. It was a metro ride and a walk up the street away. It had just snowed several inches so the sidewalk was slippery. As I was approaching, I slipped on some ice and hit the ground hard like a hockey check. It was a bit embarrassing, so I entered the restaurant feeling a bit humbled. Grotesk is the kind of restaurant that can lift up a humbled man by reminding him where he stands on the food chain. I ordered the Black Angus Sausage with Sauerkraut as an appetizer/snack, and the Black Angus Flank Steak. The sausages and sauerkraut was just a tiny portion. Three bites served in a bowl the size of a teacup. Not filling at all, but full of flavor. The sauerkraut seemed a little creamy with some mustard seeds mixed in there. Very tasty. I like that this steakhouse is not afraid to tell you that your steak will be served medium-rare. It was served with some extra crispy fries, bearnaise sauce, roasted onion and a salad. It was presented as shown in the photo below. At first I was annoyed that everything was presented on separate plates, but it turned out that this way helped me to slow down and enjoy the flavors. The steak was cooked just as they said, and was seasoned with large salt crystals. Delicious. The weakest parts of the meal was the salad and the fries. The salad was meh. The fries were tasty and crispy, but maybe overcooked. I know they were intended to be well done, but some of them were on the verge of burned. Nothing some salt and a dunk in the bearnaise sauce couldn't cure. Overall it was a great meal and I left feeling restored to full carnivore glory.

Pastor is some sort of Peruvian, Asian and Latin crossover restaurant and whatever they wish to…read morecall themselves it does work. The space is welcoming and despite the packed room and fairly barren walls they managed to keep the sound level low enough for people to easily carry-on a conversation. Staff are friendly albeit a bit stressed but not so that it bothered me. They have a fairly interesting wine list, with a lot of variety and fairly many wines by the glass (for example four different sparkling wines by the glass). The beer selection is also good with many interesting options and the cocktails impress as well. What was a disappointment was however the non-alcoholic selection- 2 beers and sodas. No cocktails, ciders or other interesting stuff and the beers were not really that exciting. Food is meant to be shared and that was what we did. Great and plentiful edamame with ginger, soy and lemongrass sauce was very nice. The empanadas were ok and the sauce saved the dish. The zucchini tempura was fresh and the sauce was r a good fit. The highlight was however the short ribs, plenty of food and really tender and juicy with the right flavors. A bit messy to eat but good. The churros for dessert are better skipped, not bad but also not worth it.

It must have been that one because it tasted way fishier than the other two ceviches we had. Our last day (Sunday) in Helsinki was ruined, and a hellish flight home awaited. Also, it took three days in total to get well enought to return to normal routine/work. Otherwise the staff was super friendly and the rest of the food was ok. The Pimientos De Padrón could have used some salt, because there was none, and the fried potatoes tasted/looked like standard restaurant fries except the sauce. We emailed Pastor about the food poisoning, but all we got was excuses and zero understanding. We'll probably never return to this restaurant because of that.
