I was looking for a photographer to do newborn photos of my son. I found Kim's website by Internet…read moresearch engine and liked the photos that I saw on her webpage. So, the two stars are for the fact that I do like her photos (at least, the ones on the webpage) and allowing for the fact that my experience could be isolated. Unfortunately, I never actually got to the point of booking Kim's service. Several things led to this decision and should be considered by future potential clients. 1) The price list for prints/services on her website is not all inclusive. I emailed her and asked what the price would be for 5x7 prints. She responded by email and quoted me a price of one for $25 or two for $40. However, when it came time for her to invoice me, she charged me $60 for two 5x7 prints. The only explanation I can imagine is that when I was contemplating spending nearly $1300, she wanted to charge me one price and when I amended my request to a package that was closer to $750, she increased the charge for the very same items. I understand that some photographers may want to give you a break for bulk or large orders, but there is no reason to charge someone MORE than the quoted base price ($25/each) just because the anticipated order value decreased. 2) I think it's reasonable for a photographer to charge a booking/reservation fee. This has been standard practice when I've worked with other professional photographers. However, Kim expected to me to commit to either a pre-set package or a set order of a la carte prints/products (before the session ever occurred) and wanted to invoice me UPFRONT based on this. She told me the balance of the invoice (minus the booking fee) would be due, arbitrarily, on my expected due date. That is to say, it's entirely possible that she was going to expect payment of hundreds (or possibly thousands) of dollars BEFORE TAKING A SINGLE PHOTOGRAPH! Potentially, before my baby was even born! 3) There are no terms or conditions listed on the website for client recourse should you pay all this money upfront and then, by chance, not be satisfied with the images that you are presented with after the session actually takes place (see #2 above). I think that if a photographer is going to charge high-end prices for their services, than it should follow that their business practice (ethics) and customer service follow. Sadly, that wasn't the case here.
