I had a great solo brunch at Opal this past weekend when I was in Chevy Chase to see a movie. Opal is a beautiful restaurant - elegant but still very comfortable and approachable. The service was friendly throughout, too. Opal is a new-ish restaurant from the restauranteurs behind Nina May. It's a neighborhood restaurant with a focus on vegetable-forward dishes and Mid-Atlantic produce and products. I ordered from their Restaurant Week brunch menu, which includes three courses for $35. I ordered: the West Coast tempura squash blossom (with green garlic remoulade and ranch powder), the pan-seared trout filet (with eggplant caponata, garlic labneh, and black olive vinaigrette), and the key lime pie (with meringue and dried lime). I've been meaning to try out this spot after watching its reel on an IG account on DMV bites. Came here for brunch with my friend to celebrate his birthday and we both ordered the three course meal. The oysters were delightful and the risotto smells amazing. I got the chocolate pot de crème which isn't too sweet as it consists of dark chocolate, offering a bitter touch which is perfect for my liking. Three of us went to Opal to celebrate birthdays. The atmosphere is warm and inviting yet upscale. Service was impeccable. We opted for the Simple Supper were the table shares two courses each with two different dishes. Each person then orders a personal entree. For our first course we enjoyed Tempura Squash Blossom and Charred Broccoli Salad. The squash blossom was stuffed with a delicious cherve and served with a mole and cantaloupe mostardo. The mole was extremely spicy, too much for my guests. The salad was large and delicious with several types of "cruchies". For our second course, we had butternut squash agnolotti and duck confit. The agnolotti was enhanced with brown butter. The duck was juicy inside, crispy outside, and very rich. But the highlight was the smoky carrots served under the duck! For entrees we had swordfish and scallops. Both we ok, but did not seem to be at the same level as the first two courses. The scallops were served over a romesco sauce that completely over powered the scallops. The swordfish itself was cooked perfectly. The hominy was good but the tomatoes and sauces brought the dish down. For dessert, we had key lime pie and apple crisp. The key lime filling was good but the crust was too heavy, almost like pizza crust. The Apple crisp was excellent. Overall, I will try Opal again but will try different entrees. read more

I got the bottomless drinks for $17 and the 3 course brunch deal for $39. Starting with their wood-fired bread, I cannot recommend it enough! It was warm, flavorful, and came with a delicious whipped butter. I also tried the sweet potato latkes which were also delicious! For the main, I got the breakfast sandwich. It was pretty good for a breakfast sandwich but what really elevated it was this tomatillo (I think?) sauce. For dessert, I had the chocolate pot de crème and also really enjoyed that. Rating- 3.5 stars! I went to Opal with a group for brunch. It had a very nice and relaxing ambiance! The staff was very welcoming and I really appreciated our server who worked to make sure we were all happy with our orders. For myself, I decided to do the 3 course brunch. I started off with the Cucumber + Mezcal cocktail which included spicy mezcal. I loved it! It was refreshing, but the spice also hit you. It was fun! I next had the shrimp and polenta for my first course which was tasty. For my main I had the orange fried chicken and waffles. It was good--just good. Lastly, I had the Tiramisu for dessert. I ended up giving the 3.5 rating because our dishes were hit or miss amongst the group. Some were great and a few sent back. Ample parking options to choose from (there's a CVS and I believe a Walgreens) that's nearby for you to park at, so you're not limited to metered parking. The food was good, but I do wish there were more options to choose from. The main entree options was very limiting in my opinion. But with that said, the food was good. Came here recently Friday night for my birthday dinner with friends--overall it was great! Service was good too. They even gave me a birthday card! Food was delicious! Highly recommend the Maine Lobster Ravioli, Clams with Saffron Spaghetti, Dry Aged Roseda Beef Striploin, and Mushroom Risotto. For shareables, the Wood Fired Oysters and Crispy Brussel Sprouts were good, but wasn't a huge fan of the Ricotta Dumplings. While the cocktails were not my favorite, the wine list was extensive and reasonably priced. But the food... it was incredible! The bread was awesome and the lamb pita was so delicious. I honestly expected the ricotta dumplings to be amazing but they were kind of just okay. However under no circumstances should you skip the ham. I know it sounds crazy because who orders ham but DO NOT SLEEP ON THE HAM. It was easily one of the best dishes I ordered this year. The dessert were both delicious and the over experience was pleasant. The only surprising thing was the whole restaurant was closed down by like 9:30. As in staff was pretty much gone. Opal is literally the chicest hidden gem in DC!!! From the greeting, to the outdoor patio, minimalist yet funky decor, to the open kitchen. You are sure to enjoy your time here. NEGATIVES: if you're going to use snap peas why use string ones and not stringless? Also - neither of the stem/ends were removed so I guess you get double the fiber. Watermelon salad was more like tomato salad with a few small chunks of watermelon. It was tomato salad with watermelon & the texture of the halloumi wasn't great. General question - why don't restaurants provide serving utensils anymore for dishes? It's so odd to have to ask, particularly if you are sharing. Had the cucumber lime soda and it wasn't for me, I thought there'd be more to it but it was just a cucumber soda water essentially. Was disappointed with the seasonal strawberry mimosa too, not very flavorful. Tried the desserts my friends had and the tiramusu was warm, it was pretty gross and seems like they left them sitting out before serving. I've never had a tiramusu that wasn't served cold. The flavor was good though. The food was really hit or miss for the group. Our server was really friendly and attentive and they were so accommodating to our large group but they were overwhelmed. The people who did bottomless only got 2 drinks. Really adorable ambience and I've heard nothing but rave reviews about this place so I was surprised our experience was lackluster. A lot of food, the main is downsized so you're not overwhelmed with the quantity. Ginger soup that was a light opener with a nice tang. Then artichoke hearts with stuffed cheese, hazelnuts, in a crusty shell of some kind, over a dijon mustard sauce. This was followed with roasted cauliflower and broccoli salad. Another winner. The fourth offering was lobster stuffed ravioli. Much to my surprise, there was a generous amount of decadent fresh Maine lobster in there. Wow. So I was cruising with this meal, until the entree. Opal overall was an OK experience but left much to be desired. My friend and I went for a recent weeknight dinner and were immediately taken aback by the restaurant trying to be fancy but having the décor of a Crate and Barrel store. We had made a reservation and were seated immediately. Our service was mostly good, although our dishes took a while to come. However, I did appreciate that our server was willing to make an accommodation for us on the tasting menu (swapping in ricotta dumplings for the autumn olive farm ham + black pepper croquette), which my friend and I split. We each got our own main (my friend got the salmon and I got the striploin). Given the menu options, I recommend getting the tasting menu if you go to Opal. The dish quality ranged from below average to excellent, with nothing outstanding or terrible. Sunchoke volute: The best of the snacks, with a creamy, full-flavored soup complemented with a nice crunch from the other ingredients. Chickpea panisse: Besides being extremely small, this was an underwhelming bite. I would recommend swapping it for something else if you are able. Crispy Pommes Dauphine: A solid bite, with the roe providing a nice crunch and saltiness to the potatoes and the chives providing a fresh element. Heirloom Beet Salad with Whipped Herb Goat Cheese: The best dish of the night, extremely balanced and composed. I loved the two different types of beets, the goat cheese added delicious umami, the red endive provided a sour and crunch element, the hazelnuts giving an additional crunch and the citrus topping off the dish with acidity. Ricotta Dumplings: Although the the dumplings were a bit overcooked for my liking and the ricotta flavor could have shown through more, the brown butter, squash, and chilies provided the perfect complement for the dish. Salmon: A bit salty for my liking but otherwise a good dish. Striploin: A good but not distinctive dish. The striploin was perfectly cooked medium-rare and the veggies went well with the meat. While I wish we got a little larger portion for the snacks on the tasting menu, the $59 price was fair for the quantity of what we got. If you live in the Chevy Chase area, Opal is a solid higher-end American food option, although not worth going if you live more than a 15-minute walk, bus, or car ride. read more

We went for brunch this weekend and did the "simple brunch" which is a 2 course meal. All three of us got the shrimp and grits which were pretty great- the grits and sauce were fantastic, my shrimp was slightly overcooked but not offensively so. I had the Chicken and Waffles as my entree and while the waffle was light and fluffy and the chicken was hot and crunchy- the "winter slaw" was so overwhelming it just ruined the dish for me. I love a good cole slaw and this one was not bad, but it was complete overkill on the plate. There was so much of it my waffle turned into a soggy mayonnaise-y mess by the 3rd bite. I didn't love the hot honey either- they should stick with Mike's Hot Honey! I wish they would've just mentioned that there is a lot of cole slaw- would you prefer that on the side? While the restaurant itself was very nice and cozy- I was not at all impressed with the service. Once we ordered they kept trying to take the small plates away and we politely asked if we could keep at least one as we might share bites once the food came. At least 3 separate times the server tried to take them and eventually once the food came we had to ask for some extra plates. Not sure why that was so difficult! I had asked for a glass of wine several times and the server said "wonderful!" and then the next time he came back to the table he asked me if I would like anything else to drink. I came with a light eater so we only were able to get two items on the menu. I enjoyed the ricotta dumplings, the ricotta tasted nice and fresh and the roasted pumpkin was really nice. We both really liked the carrots, they were simple but very well seasoned and nice with the whipped feta. I had an espresso martini to drink which was well done with I think a bit of a hazelnut favor? The interior is nice and airy with a lot of natural elements and they have a cute patio which appears to be dog friendly. I definitely want to come back to try more of the menu. read more
