Street or parking structures nearby and walkable to many restaurants and shops. Such an added plus to historic Old Town Alexandria. The shop isn't that big and during the time of my visit it was super tight trying to get around the store. Unfortunately they were out of the mini Travelers notebook 20th anniversary edition. It's not a full stock of TN products so lower your expectations. Nonetheless, a quaint store I'll be checking out whenever I'm in the DMV region.

So I couldn't wait to visit Penny Post when I was in town on business recently. This little place is tiny-but-mighty, packed full of allll the planner-related things you could possibly need. From washi tape to notebooks, from fancy paperclips to customized post-its, they had everything I could possibly ever want (and more). The staff is really helpful, too. Perhaps noticing the blank stare/look of overwhelm on my face, a kind employee asked if she could help me find anything. Anything? I had found everything! Luckily, I was doing carry-on only this trip, so only left with a handful of pens and a roll (okay, two rolls) of lovely floral-printed washi tape. If you're into planning, journaling, fancy pens, fountain pens, stickers, or just need a creative greeting card, Penny Post is the place. A quick note about parking: it's sort of a nightmare! I drove around for 20 minutes before I found a spot. But it was worth the hunt.

Everyone wears a name tag (as someone who is not good with names, I LOVE this!). At the beginning of class everyone does an introduction. Everyone was so friendly and it was a very nice community. The area is cute and there are restaurants nearby to grab a bite to reward yourself. The instructor was very kind and patient with the students! Add to it calendar immediately after you receive confirmation for the class because the time doesn't show up in your email confirmation. There's plenty of parking nearby. Most parking allows for up to 3 hours (max). I recommend checking out the shop. They also still fabrics and other items. Don't judge my finished product too harshly

The instructor (Valerie, I believe) was very detailed in her instructions that included threading a machine, debugging, ironing, sewing different stitches and lengths, assembling and dissembling the machine, and making a mini pillow. After she demoed different steps, she would have us try and wandered the room quickly correcting us if something wasn't quite right. We also had to repeat each action twice to develop the muscle memory. There are classes available for all things a beginning sewer needs to know up to how to make your own bodice at advance levels. The store has patterns, fabric, and take-home kits. If you cannot make a scheduled workshop, you can do the lesson over private instruction. I had followed YouTube instructions before and done lots of searches trying to figure out how to sew with limited success. This class multiplied my knowledge by 1000 and helped me identify what I was doing wrong on my own so I could course correct. If you're interested in learning to sew, this is your place!

When I have given friends personalized baby pillows for their children as gifts, I tell them I might have spent many hours stitching, but can take no credit for the expert sewing/finishing. Former owner Mr. Devaris and current owner Mrs. Campagna have an eye for color and fabric. Sometimes I have had firm ideas about color choices, only to be persuaded to try a different colorway altogether -- with amazing results. Whenever I have mailed pieces to be finished -- which is convenient since I work regular business hours -- Mrs. Campagna has always called me to discuss color and fabric choices. Earlier this year, I was dropping off a small needlepoint sampler piece in which I incorporated the parents' favorite colors (sky blue and lime green). While looking at velvet fabrics with the seamstresses, Mr. and Mrs. Devaris stopped by to say hello. The seamstresses and I asked for them for their opinion on what color would work best, and they remembered a blue-green microsuede fabric used for an upholstery job a while back. A small piece of the fabric was found, just big enough for my project. The pillow turned out perfect. Because my experience with Devaris has been so positive throughout the time I have taken my pieces to this local small business, I felt I had to write this positive review.
