The staff is beyond great, they're always available to talk to, the property grounds are well kept, quiet, and safe. We never once had an issue with our place and the only time we had a small maintenance request, it was handled within the hour. We also miss their workout area and club house. They have pool table, bowflex, three cardio machines and a sauna. Rarely did it ever get busy enough to wait for anything either. The location is great, it's not too far from the University and in a great neighborhood where you're close enough to the city, but partying and noise had never been an issue. The complex is comprised of a pretty even mix of students and working professionals. You're just about a 10 minute walk to Fred Meyer or to Haggen and the park 'n ride is right across the street, so you have plenty of options. The one bedroom had the largest closet I have ever seen in an apartment, ever. The cabinets/carpet/flooring are all standard apartment fare, nothing special but really well maintained. The important point is that these units are rented "as is". There web portal is "as is" and they take no responsibility for it's security or integrity- if it fails any litmus, they are held harmless!!! This is all available for review in their terms and conditions. Now for the condition of the units - I say units as I have been privileged to be invited into several occupied units. PLEASE READ: 1) The units are old and worn out. 2) The appliances are old and worn out. 3) The kitchen counters are simply painted plywood. 4) There is mold, water-leaks, rotting and decaying building components, silverfish, animal feces, provided internet does not have enough bandwidth to retrieve email... Just a partial list. 5) The laundry machines (they do not own - however they get rent and or a kickback for usage) The machines are in various states of operation and when operating will cost $8 to $22 per load, that's a load of wash and the same load to dry. Ended up purchasing a drying rack for the apartment as the clothing is not dry after spending an average of $20. Also there are NO REFUNDS and NO ASSISTANCE when either the washer or dryer stops working in the middle of a cycle. 6) The apartment was FILTHY when I arrived, it was so bad, sticky, moldy, worn out that it required deep cleaning before I could move in. I took photos of the mold and other concerns - I was told that they are not responsible for mold, the implication is that I created the mold ¿? Are you serious? The photos are from prior to me moving in, how could I be responsible for existing mold? Lastly, I needed to wait for a week before it was available as they claimed they were cleaning and painting (I don't believe this at all) 7) These concerns have been reported multiple times without a timely response and without action after weeks of waiting. **The complex is on their third "management company" in less than a year.... HHmmmm, more than likely to limit their liability. Caution to future tenants, READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS before signing a lease. You may wonder why we rented this apartment if some or all of these issues existed. We were two weeks away from the start of a new school year and should have been suspicious that they had availability when almost no one else did. We had no living room/living space, and had no openable windows in the main area. -There is no upkeep to the property. This place is the definition of "don't fix it, paint over it". In the winter, there was a broken waterpipe that made accessing the parking lot dangerous -they didn't fix it for weeks. -No one who works there has any clue what they're doing (expect for Carl and Niko, who are awesome). Probably due to the management constantly changing, no one is ever able to give you a straight answer on anything -that is if you can even reach them. You call, you email, you can visit the office. We were totally tricked/trapped. -The security deposit was $200. After emailing and calling SEVERAL people, I finally got my deposit back about a month after moving out. When I got it, they had taken out $85 for maintenance and cleaning. WHAT?? Not only was the apartment FILTHY when we arrived, we also deep cleaned it before leaving. There was absolutely no damage, so there is no reason that money should've been taken out. -For weeks in the Winter, and Spring the fire alarms would go off for minutes at a time. Everyone would have to pack up themselves and their pets to move out into the parking -only for the fire department to tell us that there was no fire, but faulty equipment. THIS HAPPENED PROBABLY 10 TIMES ALTOGETHER. -Consistently bad wifi, no place to set up cable or internet in the main area -No circulation (food goes bad pretty fast) -Laundry cost $4 a load. The machines are disgusting and never get cleaned, same with the dryers that usually don't dry your stuff properly. It's ridiculous we have to pay at all. -Of course, rent is expensive everywhere, but to have the audacity to charge so much money for such an HORRENDOUS place to live is criminal. Every appliance, piece of furniture, the walls and floors themselves were the cheapest, ugliest material known to humankind. I will say that maintenance was always efficient in fixing these horrendous appliances when they inevitably crapped out. The dishwasher would break at a simple touch and the windows would mysteriously lose parts at gentle gusts of wind. The laundry room was a torturous experience. Half the washers wouldn't spin, leaving your clothes soaked in mildewy water and the smell of failure. The dryers were always working at half capacity, many being broken yet appearing to be in working order. Me and other residence would have to come down several times to restart their dryer to make sure their clothes actually got dry. There was always a smell to these clothes whether it was due to poor cleaning or a burning odor that came from the high heat setting which was a necessity when using these shoddy excuses for appliances. They installed two new dryers a few months ago and then immediately kept them off for months without reason. There is no air conditioning in the apartments at all despite them having air conditioning in the hallways. It makes zero sense. The rooms are the size of sardine cans and for 950 a month, it is outrageous. The furniture is so uncomfortable, me and my roommates often opted to sit on the floor rather than on the couch that no doubt gave us lifetime back issues. I don't think there was a single piece of real wood in that entire apartment. It was all plastic including the fibers of the couch which scratched the skin at every touch. The chair that came with the apartment was as hard a rock, as if humanity has made no improvements since we lived in caves and slept on boulders. The television was barely functioning. We would have to wait a good five seconds before a button on the remote would even be registered by the thing. The loading times were immense and actually getting something to load was a feat comparable to competing in the Olympics. Worse even was the wifi if you can even call it that. We had to turn off wifi on our phones every morning because our data worked eons ahead of the stateside "wifi" which would make things fail to load indefinitely. At one point, we lost hot water for over a week. When washing my hair, my hands and feet turned purple from the freezing cold temperature. They then "generously" gave us 100 dollars off the next month of rent. Rent is 950. NINE FIFTY. Compared to many other apartment complexes in Bellingham, that isn't even a discount. The elevators would constantly break, leaving most residents waiting ages to get to their top floor apartments sometimes with many bags of groceries. So far, the washers/dryers barely worked (we would have had better luck washing them with a bucket and washboard at Lake Whatcom), the wifi was nonexistent even affecting our text messaging, the furniture was as hard as rocks, and we literally lost access to even luke-warm water. In other words, Stateside asked for nearly a thousand dollars a month to live in the stone age. Except for one thing, which was the AI assistant, Luna, who pestered us constantly asking for our information and for us to answer unpaid surveys to help "improve" the building. Using AI when you have a "commitment" to sustainability is low and thinking we wouldn't notice is pathetic. Just hire a human to answer questions, you cheap excuse for a shelter. The greatest insult came at move-out when me and my roommates were charged over a hundred dollars for literal specks left in the corner of drawers which we vacuumed out and wiped down with cleaner. The pictures they attached were of microscopic dust particles that could have built up in the days it took them to do the inspections. I should have spit in the drawers and cleaned them with that! But unlike stateside, I have the decency not to be so petty. It is absolutely disgusting and abhorrent the way Laird Norton Properties treats the hard-working, struggling students that simply want a clean, comfortable place to live while attending school and working in a society that already squeezes the life out of our very souls. Shame on you, Stateside. The one thing that makes this pleasurable was seeing all of the begging posters on doors asking people to renew their leases. These and the constant emails and extended deadlines tell me that justice is being served, hot. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the apartments are empty next year.
