Opio Oaks Hacienda is a wonderful exotic animal sanctuary outside of Poteet run by the kindest folks you can find in Texas. Opio Oaks is open by appointment for ranch tours. It makes for a great group or family trip. I've taken my kids down a couple times now, and they just love it. I love it too. They take in more exotic breeds of animals that need rehabilitation. You can find American bison, llamas, donkeys, zonkeys, emus, horses, cattle, and pygmy goat, and more on the grounds. The owners happily give tours around the grounds on a Kawasaki Mule, and you can get up close with the animals, feed them treats, pet them, hold them if they have babies there at the time. My kids love to just run around with the goats. Their bison are very gentle creatures, and love to have their snouts pet. Beware of the drool!
Opio Oaks is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and the suggested donation for all of this is ten dollars per person, but they're more than happy to greet anybody and donate what you can afford to. At least to pay for the treats for the animals, but all proceeds go towards the sanctuary, so give what you can because these are the best kind of people we've got on this earth doing their best for their animals. read more
