When I was about 7 or 8, I used to bug my mum to take me here for a pair of shiny new patent dolly shoes, which would be the envy of all my pals on the first day back to Primary School. The best part was the feet measuring machine, which I would jump onto and stand, waiting for the electronic measuring tape to move and for the woman to tell me what size I was. Unluckily, for my Dad's wallet, I was always a half size, making finding and buying shoes difficult and expensive. I always came to Crichton's shoes for my footwear, right up until I was about 10 or 11 and decided that bright white Nike trainers were cooler. The shop specialises in the measuring and fitting of shoes, which is fantastic for kiddies who have growth spurts all the time. Upstairs in here is dedicated to Kids shoes, and downstairs to adults. The shoes are expensive though, at around £25-£40 per pair of shoes for children, which can be seen as a bit excessive. However, they do last and are really beautiful and comfortable, so perhaps worth spending more on something that will last a full term.

The staff are friendly we went in with a young child to get their feet messured and found the staff to be approachable and helpful talking not only to us but also to the child. The shoes were quite expensive at £30.00 a pair so be warned! The fact that the children's and adult departments are seperated is ideal as it allows the children to walk around freely without annoying or getting in anyones way. The shoes are well displayed.

What is good is that you do not need to wait for the alternative foot to be sourced as the shoes are in pairs which makes the shopping experience a bit better than that of waiting for a shop assistant to become free to get the other shoe. The prices are really reasonable and most of the shoes are good quality. A good shoe shop with some nice shoes for the whole family.

As I said on the odd occassion they have had something unusual and in the past when I needed shoes for a wedding its been here I've ended up getting something. They are probably better for gents shoes than ladies now and seem to have a better selection of styles for men. The prices are more than you would pay in the likes of matalan but in the majority of cases Stead and Simpson's shoes are at least leather!!!! The staff aren't particularly helpful or friendly and really look like they don't want to be there.

The clothing is incredibly bland, un-exciting and blah. If you're looking for something plain in a pastel shade or white or black, prefrably for your Gran, then this place is great. The prices are very fair, and won't break the bank if you fancy putting an outfit together for an older lady. They also go up to bigger sizes which is brilliant, however sizes stop at 22-24 which is not big enough in my opinion. Ideal for knitwear, comfy shoes and jackets for the older lady.
