Dr. Barez was very thorough when analyzing my eyes and taking my medical history into consideration. She is very experienced and knowledgeable. My only complaint is that the medical assistants who took notes on my symptoms and reasons for the appointment did not take notes accurately. read more

Dr. Badger is a wonderful person, but the wait time in the lobby, even with appointment, is hours. I think it's RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!

Optima Eye Center does an outstanding job of providing medical care, but the wait time in the waiting room is an ongoing and frustrating problem. I have waited more than once up to 3 hours before my 89 year old mother has been seen by her doctor. Yes, the doctor always apologizes and that is appreciated, but none of the other (and there are many) members of the staff ever utters a word of apology, concern, or anything which might make an extremely long wait a bit more comfortable for the many elderly patients and others patiently waiting in that waiting room. I have heard many people complaining about the wait time, some very loudly and some with quiet frustration. There must be an answer to this situation. Scheduling less patients per hour, or perhaps a call ahead would help when it is obvious that a patient will have a 2 - 3 hour wait. This is clearly not an acceptable amount of time for any patient to have to wait for an appointment and it severely detracts from the good reputation that this eye center has. This is such a huge problem at Optima that it is my utmost hope that Dr. Mandel and others there will work to find a solution to a very troublesome situation. I am hoping that soon the medical excellence will be matched with a pleasant overall experience at the center. read more

I can't believe the receptionist at this place. Drove all the way to Hayward from Santa Clara for my 7:15am appointment. No one was in the office and I waited for a good 15 minutes after my appointment time to see if anyone would open up the office. I called back later in the morning to figure out what happened and she blamed me saying that there were tons of people in the office and I apparently wasn't patient enough. This is not a review of a doctor at this clinic. This review is for the clinic itself. The staff at this clinic are the worst I have ever dealt with. Trying to get refunds or records has been a nightmare from the start. Every person talked to has a different response to the same question. Follow up was basically non-existent. And still waiting for a refund for something I shouldn't have been charged for in the first place (almost two months now). Don't go to this place unless you absolutely have to. The doctor I saw was great but the support staff is terrible. They also have quite an attitude when you're visiting--very condescending and arrogant. Wait times are also very unreasonable--I've waited up to 2 hours for a basic appointment. Agree with other posters...AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE. read more

How do I make an appointment in this office? Despite the long wait, my father still likes the dr he sees in this office.. He doesn't want to change his doctor.. It has been 3 weeks that I am attempting to make an appointment.. First time I was told that they couldn't find his file..they will call me back after they find his file.. They didn't call.. Second time they put me on hold forever till I gave up..third time, they said their system is down and they don't accept appointments.. I would have to call back on Monday.. Wtf is going on there?? Sadly I read other reviews AFTER I visited this clinic. I did not experience quite the LONG wait time, but there were certainly other RED FLAGS. When I arrived at 8:45 a.m. there were approx 20 folks sitting in a huge waiting room, mostly in the senior age group (as am I.) The previous comments about the office staff are on point: unsmiling, brusque and indifferent. This was my first time, and my appt was with a doctor other than the one who eventually saw me. Pleasant enough, but did NOT ask about any prior baseline information from a previous HMO (even though those results are readily available). Just ordered more tests! And then there is the BILLING issue. My first-time costs were supposed to be covered by Medicare and my supplementals but I was sent a balance due bill. When I called the Optima office to explain, I was informed that if I read my Medicare booklet I would know that some eyecare costs are NEVER covered. VERY SNIPPY. So I contacted the referring organization and they will be attempting to clear up the billing confusion. In the meantime, I join others by saying STAY FAR, FAR AWAY. As a sidenote: when I parked my car in a lot behind this clinic, I noticed that one Dr.'s Tesla car was charging in a specialty-built electric outlet. I don't think this outfit will miss my business. read more

Received quick and attentive service on my consultation appointment for cataract surgery. (I did schedule 5 weeks ahead of time for the consultation and enlisted the assist of my optometrist's office who referred me.) I was able to get the mapping done for laser surgery on the same day at a second location and still finish my overall appointment well within the parameters which had been communicated to me to expect ahead of time. Completing the paperwork beforehand and being given resources to begin my research were helpful at reducing the time in the office. I was pleased with the support staff in both offices and the quality of exam I had with the staff and Dr. Mandel was complete and thorough. Leaving me with an overall sense of confidence. read more

I was referred to Optima by my Optometrist for further vision testing. Unfortunate for me I spent four hours in this doctors office. My appointment was at 2pm and I was literally the last person to leave. I was shuffled in and out of exam rooms so many times I lost count. They have far too many patients and far too few equipment to accommodate the load. My doctor was very nice and seemed knowledgeable but that can only go so far compared to the ridiculous wait time. Not to mention customer service at the front desk is nonexistent. This office is owned by Dr. Mark Mandel who is reviewed on this site for another location. I wish I had read that review before going here. Obviously he likes to run his offices like patient mills with very little respect for others time. My recommendation would be to avoid all of his offices. There are to many other Ophthalmologists out there to be stuck going to any of his locations. read more

Doctors are wonderful and so is staff. The reason for this rating is because no one is answering phone. I get put on voicemail for the pharmacy this morning trying to pick up some medications. They called last night to say was ready and I need to call this morning to have them put it together. There is only fifteen more minutes till closing so I guess there's no way I will be getting the medications today. Will try tomorrow. Maybe the problem is they need more workers because the staff is overworked trying to do their best. read more

Gees!! Called at 9 am to schedule an eye appointment, the staff or whoever doesn't even know which "specialist" can take care of my condition and asked me to wait for call back. Waited until 12 and called back, the staff said she is waiting for the admin or whoever to come in and asked me to wait again. Waited until 3 to call back... Still the same answer. Called at 5:55, I got hang up twice!!! What the hell!! This is NOT the way to treat patient!!!!! I hope I can give 0 star to this place! read more

This place is so bad with time management. I am my grandmothers care taker and I take her to all her appointments. Optima us by far the worst place to go to get your eye care.. one of the doctors doesn't know when its appropriate to make jokes and when its not. Her surgery hasn't healed and its been about 2 months since.. we've done everything the doc and pharmacy tell us to do... Another surgery hasn't helped her at all, just cost money.. and when you have an appointment apparently it doesn't matter they will get to you when they get to you. It's very common that when we go we don't get called till about and hour after our appointment... I would give no stars but that's not an option... So I'd you can help it at all... I am very happy I found Dr Alberelli at Optima Eye Clinic who helps me to manage my rare Uveitis decease. Dr. Alberelli is a "big picture" doctor, who carefully considers all pros and cons while choosing medication for individual patient. She is very thoughtful, attentive and caring. It definitely helped me not to get steroid induced glaucoma and preserve my sight. I would definitely recommend her as a doctor. read more

Although I have no issue with the doctors at the clinic, I do not recommend this outfit unless you do not value your time. I feel the clinic does respect its patient time, because of it poor scheduling practice. My experience with the clinic is, the wait time is way too long. I agree with the previous reviewer. I think Dr. Mandell is very competent and medically capable. However, his office is chaotic and his administrative staff is incompetent. How hard is it to schedule someone for the right time? The average waiting time is more than an hour (past your appointment time). They obviously overbook. my uncle was scheduled for surgery at 945am today. after waiting in the lobby for two hours we have been brought back to the back... an hour later we are still waiting... now we are told that they may need to reschedule as a material they need is not here... they are waiting on a phone call to determine if the surgery is a go or not... how is it that they just now are telling us that they don't have something that was needed for the surgery... more updates as they come.... I wrote to the President of Affinity Medical Group because Optima is a member of that group. My letter enumerated the issues I noted in my August review. Dr. Mandel's reaction was to ban me from his practice and cancel a scheduled procedure with another doctor who visits his clinic once a month. I have not contacted the other doctor to determine if he allowed the cancellation or Mandel forced him but I am going to do so to prepare my letter to Medicare and my health insurance provider. read more

Dr. Mandel is a wonderful surgeon. The office and appointment times are dismal at best. On Tuesday I had my mom there for a retina check. She waited 1 and 1/2 hours before she was called back for drops and by the time she was seen by the retina specialist we had been there for 2 1/2 hours and finally left after 3 hours. read more

Waited for 2 hours and 20 minutes to see the doctor from the time of appointment. The front disk girls are very rude so don't even bother to ask any questions. The doctor handed me the blood tests X-ray and the file but when I ask the front disk where to go for the tests they told me to call my insurance and find out myself. Before I was leaving I had to schedule a follow up and ask the receptionist if I have to wait for couple of hour for my next appointment so she responded very rudely that people sometimes wait for more than 3 hours. Been going to OPTIMA yearly for my eye check ups. Can't do the laser thing but if anyone ever asks about OPTIMA I know it's one of the first and Best Laser Surgery center in the Bay Area. My favorite O.D. is Susan Ristow, unfortunately she is only there 1-2 days a week. She is a kind soul, but very professional and always knows the answers to my questions. read more

I've been taking my elderly mother to this place for years and she has always received good medical care. We're seeking another provider however because the place is like a zoo. It's always overcrowded with close to two dozen folks sitting in the waiting room - they have too many doctors and they schedule too many patients in too small a facility. We've never been admitted to an exam room on time, a couple of times it was over an hour after mom's appointment time that we were finally seen. It's especially discouraging when someone comes in with a later appointment, gets called in and leaves while we're still waiting in the waiting room. Apparently some doctors are more behind than others. There's a constant bustle of staff coming and going, the parking lot is often full requiring us to park in an adjacent lot of an office building on another street and the whole visit ends up being an unpleasant experience. read more
