A toiletry pouch made by my husband at his sewing class!
    Vickie S.

I purchased a semi-private sewing class for myself and my sister in law, but because of our schedules, our husbands ended up taking the class with Ross Anna instead of us! Ross Anna worked patiently with me to schedule a time and offered both an at-home visit or her studio in Costa Mesa as options. Both guys have little to no experience with a sewing machine, but the finished product they brought home was quite amazing. If there is something in particular you want to make, I recommend bringing the pattern and specific fabric/materials you need to make it. Ross Anna will work with you on it. Otherwise, she has specific projects to suggest based on your skill level and some basic supplies to share. You can always email her ahead of the class if you have any questions. My husband loved the class! He said she was very nice, and very knowledgeable. He appreciated that she was very resourceful and worked with the materials they brought and helped them modify their pattern. Aside from the pouch they made, he learned a lot of sewing skills he can transfer to his next project. Thank you Ross Anna!!

    First quilt project. Thanks Rossanna!

What's a bobbin? When we started sewing my DILs and I didn't know how to thread our machines. Now we have made aprons, quilts, baby items etc and have a basic understanding of fabric, feet and sewing basics. Rossanna is patient, knowledgable in any manner of sewing related questions, and funny. She is an excellent teacher- and knows how to teach all skill levels and ages. After many good experiences with Rossana learning the basics, she gave my 9 year old niece some lessons which were thoroughly enjoyed and gave my niece the tools she needed to use her machine. Highly recommend.

Canvas frisbee that Rossanna helped me make
    Gregory T.

Had a dog frisbee made of canvas that I wanted to duplicate. This was my first sewing project ever. It has a foam layer in the middle, and hard plastic cord around the edging to help keep the shape. My first attempt from Youtube learning was okay, but had some problems, and took me 8-10 hours to make. My second attempt, I couldn't get the sizing of things right. My hopes weren't high that I could find somebody that could help fill in all the pieces I was missing and I wasn't really looking to make clothes, so a group lesson wasn't making sense for me. I hear circles aren't easy to sew, either. Combine that with canvas, foam layer, and hard plastic cording, and I wasn't finding many that could help with what I wanted to do. Found Rossanna, and was surprised when she said she could help with that. And was impressed when I asked what I should bring with me after signing up for a 2 hour private lesson. She said just bring everything you have, and we'll go from there. To me, that's a sign of a person that really knows what she's doing. And she does. She taught me how to make the pattern, and the important concepts to know when making patterns for circles. And then taught me some better/quicker ways to go about sewing it all together. Went from start to finish in just under 2 hours, and learned many good things along the way. Those 2 hours with Rossanna will save me many hours of trial, error and frustration on future projects. And even though I just met her for the first time this afternoon, it feels like I just spent the afternoon with a friend. If you have a project you want to do, and it involves sewing in any kind of way, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Rossanna to help you in learning how to do it. And how does Chipper my pooch like his new frisbee? So far, he's liking it just fine.

Some of the swimsuits that Ross Anna helped me design.

Ross Anna is the absolute best! I had to learn how to sew swimsuits for a school project and she taught me not only the basics of sewing, but also how to make my own patterns. She made sure I bought the best sewing tools and that I learned skills the proper way so that I had a strong foundation. I believe that she is a great teacher for both beginner and advanced students. She has experience in the fashion industry as well, so she is 'in the know' far beyond just a sewing realm. I have taken so many skills I learned from her into my other sewing adventures. I can 100% credit my ability to sew well because of her. She was so patient with me and is always such a positive person to be around. I am looking forward to taking more lessons with her in the future.

Ross ana showed me how to sew this cute little bag on my 4th session!

Today was my first day of sewing lesson and Ross Ana has already taught me how to make a pillow case !! Ross Anna is such a patient fun sweet teacher and she makes learning seem so easy! i.cant wait to learn how to sew more! 4 weeks later (my 4th session), Ross Anna has taught me how to cut and sew pajamas pants n a cute little fabric bag!! U can bring in whatever designs u like to make and she will show u how to make it ! I love this class and even though I only bought four classes but now I know if I need to learn how to make any thing else in future, Ross ana is just a call away!

They were able to coordinate a last minute surf lesson after another company flaked on us the morning of our lesson. My 11 year old granddaughter's lesson was with Aaron, who graciously showed up with a wetsuit, a board and a great attitude. All with barely any notice. She opted not to wear a wetsuit, but hey she's a polynesian girl and loves cold water. He explained safety, body positioning on the board, foot positioning, paddle and pop up. Actually he gave more instructions than I listed. She understood well, so this part of the lesson was pretty quick. They walked looking for a spot. Aaron explained the different types of waves pointing them out to her as they appeared. He picked a spot that was empty and showed her how to put the board in the water, which may sound silly but it is important. She paddled out, ducked and dived, turned, popped up and rode in on her first try. They stayed out for quite a while talking in between. Sometimes she wiped out and sometimes she looked like she'd been surfing since birth. After about an hour and half she needed a break and suggested he go out so she could watch. As impressive as he was, she KTFO!!!! LOL! Just a quick little nap after waking up early and all of her hard work in that cold water. When she got up they went out again. This time she needed very little assistance. It was great!!!! Now we can surf together. All in all I'm glad the other surf school I booked with flaked on us. This was a great experience all around. I'm planning on getting a lesson set up for one of my grandbaby's friends soon. The more the merrier right? I totally recommend the Sal Y Sol surf school for a great experience!

In July, I finally forced myself to attend a meeting and I am so glad I did! I've been attending Surf City Speak-n-Lead Toastmasters for about 6 weeks now and I've already learned quite a bit. This group's friendly, warm, and safe environment has helped me begin to build confidence in myself and my words without judgment, ridicule or criticism. The critiques are encouraging and is helping me develop into a stronger speaker. As a writer, words come easily, but voicing them out loud always has been an issue. I struggle especially with impromptu speaking and this group helps in not only prepared speeches but also improv speaking skills. The members go out of their way to make you feel genuinely welcome as well as help you with any questions and advice. Meetings are very well organized and the food is surprisingly good (I'm not typically a fan of restaurants like IHOP). I actually look forward to Wednesday nights every week and am excited to continue to learn and grow my skills with the help of this club.

When it comes to communication between teachers and students, it hasn't been very consistent. One instructor will say one thing, while another says something different, which makes it confusing. The grading is also inconsistent, as each instructor seems to grade differently. At the beginning of the semester, we weren't given a clear rubric for how we would be graded. Now that we are close to graduating, points are being taken off for very small details that were never emphasized before. For example, labeling the cups for the products we use--this is now required in abbreviation form, but we were never taught how to do that earlier in the program. Usually, the dispensary person would take care of that. I hope the program can become more organized, with clear expectations for both day and night classes. Right now, it feels like the night class does not receive as much attention or support. Overall, I hope things improve. However, if I had the chance to choose again, I would consider a different school because I don't feel like I learned everything I needed to know.
