I am extremely disappointed with the way Orangetheory handles its membership cancellation process. Back in May, I requested to cancel my membership because I knew I would be out of the country for several months. I was told that management would be able to handle everything over the phone and that someone would call me. That call never came. While I was away, I discovered that I had still been charged for July. When I called to resolve the issue, I was told that cancellations had to be done in person, despite what I had originally been told. Today I came into the studio and explained the entire situation to Hannah, who introduced herself as the manager. She assured me that because I had already been charged in July, I would not be charged again on my next billing date (August 14). Based on that assurance, I signed the cancellation form and left. About an hour later, Hannah called me back and completely changed what she had told me. She informed me that I would still be responsible for paying for another full month, despite her earlier promise that I would not be charged. I am leaving again in just a few days and will not even be in the country to use those classes. Charging a customer for services they cannot use after repeatedly providing incorrect information is incredibly frustrating and feels unfair. This entire experience has shown a complete lack of professionalism, communication, and customer care. Instead of working with a long-time member who made every effort to cancel in advance, Orangetheory chose to hide behind its policies while giving inconsistent information along the way. Do yourself a favor and find a fitness studio that values its members, treats them with courtesy, and doesn't look for every opportunity to squeeze another month's payment out of them. read more

This gym is amazing. Great workouts, the best possible workout that you can get in a single hours work. All the trainers are amazing, Hannah and Leon are the best! The gym staff is great too. Very understanding if something unexpected comes up, if you're nice and explain the situation they are always willing to work with you. I think they're making it a 2 studio location so they will always have a class to fit your schedule. I have been going since October and if I wasn't moving I would absolutely stay. read more

I joined OTF Closter in November 2017 and 52 classes later, I'm still nervously rushing to class to make sure I am within the first 14 people crowding around the studio door to claim my position on the treadmill... It's a healthy type of anxiety as you only half-listen to the the explanation of what OTF is for the 50th time only to find out that... "TODAY IS AN ENDURANCE DAY" or a "RUN / ROW" and then you see the look of fear in the crowd as people are upset / immediately regretting the decision to come... Meanwhile, you're still nervously waiting for the coach to open that studio door so people can passive aggressively speed walk towards a treadmill to claim their spot (can't run because you don't want to be THAT weird competitive / aggressive person in that class). Oh how people love treadmill 13 and 14... and by the way, you have one person at the Closter location that is a serious offender that cuts the "line"... unacceptable. You come late, you start by rowing. Even worse, you should get a strider. You don't get to cut in front of everyone else and take treadmill 14. In all seriousness... I've tried every workout class in the Tri-State area. Barry's Boot Camp, Soul Cycle, Fly Wheel, SLT, Crossfit, I own a Peloton, an erg and an overpriced treadmill, but I still find myself coming back to OTF to add fun / variety to my workout regime. The workouts are rigorous, but the fun music and group environment makes the 60 min class very enjoyable (I'm a little competitive and it feels great to out run / row a lot of the guys in the class... yay for dad bods!). During the week, I rarely have an issue getting a prime time class spot, especially with the ability to go to different locations in the area. I love that you have no excuses, there are classes from 5am to 8:15pm (this is so critical since everything closes early in NJ, plus OTF Closter is always adding classes!). Weekends are a nightmare since classes book up 1 - 2 weeks in advance, but I can usually get into the class through the waitlist process (you get there, put your name on the waitlist, wait until the hungover people don't show up, and they let you in 5 mins after class starts). Overall, OTF gets a 4.5, but I'm going to round up to 5. Pros: Quality of the workouts, super fun environment, and nice staff and coaches (it's like my Cheers, almost everyone knows my name... but mainly because I'm probably really annoying to everyone at OTF... sorry). Areas for Improvement: Aggressive ladies on Saturdays, that one guy that always cuts in front of the group to secure treadmill 14 even though he is the last one to show up, poor systems / technology (I can't tell you how many times I've been removed from classes, or heart rate monitor doesn't work, or I'm constantly being charged the wrong membership amounts and having to contact the studio), and pricey membership. You should join. It's fun and my husband lost 10lbs since January. read more

This is a great studio. I never had an instructor who wasn't great! Each is attentive to all the participants and gives accommodations when needed. Covid protocols are followed so it's a comfortable space. Everyone is spaced out nicely. And wearing a mask during workout isn't all that bad. The staff is friendly all around! read more

Love OTF Closter. Well run, clean with great trainers. The classes are always challenging but you are encouraged to go at your own pace or crank it up if you can. The afterburn feels great. The high interval training helps you strengthen your heart and burn calories. I usually burn 800-900 calories a class. Highly recommend OTF and love that the have locations everywhere. read more

I signed up after having my 4th child and am not a big workout person. But the intention was to lose the pregnancy weight. The guy who sold me on the membership kept telling me about the great deal, 8 classes for $99. I signed myself and my husband (who is also not a workout person). Stupid me. By the way, you also have to use their heart monitors which is another $150 each! 3 months in, I went maybe 3 times. Husband none. Can't make the time without baby help and they don't offer childcare. I went to cancel, but he told me about freezing. Didn't mention there was only a 60day max to the freezing and gives me a whole sales pitch about hating to have me waste my money on the registration and not using the gym. (Yes, you can judge me. I'm a easy sell. The biggest sucker!) So, 60 days later my card gets charged. Again, I tell myself, yikes, better make effort to go. Getting towards the end of the month, haven't gone and so I really need to cancel before they charge again. Damn! Missed it by a day. I sent an email asking to cancel. No response. Went in the following day and they tell me that I missed the 30-day cancellation window and that I will be charged one more time and my last day to use the gym will be November. I explained my baby situation. But they reminded me the language on the contract. I'm disappointed that they couldn't just forgive my one day. Wow! Frustrating. So, here is the bottomline. If you're like me where life is busy, go to a regular gym and start small. They charge $19.99 or at most $39.99. If you're really going to commit here, but want to cancel, KNOW the date you signed up and make sure you go before the 30 days! I'm going to pay $400.00 to cancel here. Oh, unless I can find someone else to take mine and my husbands place and get a membership. Anyone? $1300.00 lesson learned. read more

I am in nj on the weekends and come to this location due to the proximity, and the coaches. The only thing that turns me off every time are the front desk people. A " good morning" would suffice, maybe even a smile? , instead of merely staring at me. These are the first people that you see( the initial faces of OTF). If you are looking for a challenging fitness program, look no further than Orangetheory Fitness. You will not find a more impressive crew anywhere else than the staff and coaches in Closter. The classes are excellent! They are well designed and change continually to maximize your potential on strength and endurance. The group sizes range depending on class times but even at peak capacity it still feels like a personal training session. The schedule is well thought out with plenty of opportunity throughout the day to attend. Even the music is fun if your into EDM, alternative, classic rock or a throwback to the 90's, the studio caters to everyone! I am completely addicted to Orangetheory. Initially skeptical of another work out routine, but I really enjoy going and am completely seeing results: lower resting heart rate, significant weight loss, and more muscle. And on a practical level: I feel better and more capable! Its all group fitness classes - 30 to 40 people with a Coach on treadmill, rowing machine, and weight floor teams for an hour. Everybody rotates - so you get a bit of each every class for balance. Each day is different with different goals, focus, and challenge. You wear a heart rate monitor so you can truly see how hard you're working - you can't hide - and you can't lie. Hit the heart rate goals (12 minutes in the Orange zone - above 83% of your target heart rate) and you'll totally see you getting stronger with time and burn more calories even after class ends. The Coaches get to know you and are wonderful at providing guidance - especially if you ask. They cheer you on and make sure you don't "phone it in." And you really go at your own pace and for your own goals and capability. The front desk team has always taken care any issues - monitor not working, whatever. Classes book up fast, but people always late cancel, so my wife and I basically always manage to get in. The other members are friendly and all types of bodies. I think the whole shared experience of surviving this intense class makes you more friendly. Really never had that experience at a gym before. Definitely worth a try - and I'll bet you'll get hooked if try to make it habit. read more

I'm a member here and love the workouts and instructors here but this place is so unaccommodating and arrogant and way too many rules. I was told previously there is a 10 minute grace period if You are late- apparently they changed the rules without notifying its customers bc I never received a notice but now there is only a 5 min grace period and they are really strict and won't accommodate if you are late. I had to go thru hell of traffic to get to class (took a half hr when it should only take 15 min) but they would not let me go in after 10 min late. If they want to stay in business they should be a bit more accommodating for special circumstances and stop being so rigid with their paying customers, especially if they just sprung up a *new* rule that no one knows about. read more

I signed up here in January thinking I'll try it for a month- it's March and still going strong and can't picture myself going back to my regular gym after this. The workouts are intense but because of the floor to treds to rowers rotation I don't feel it as much as I thought I would. Almost EVERY class has me aching the next day so even though I'm not dying in class I KNOW I got an awesome workout. They make it fun and change up the workouts everyday so you don't get bored one bit. All the trainers here are sooo nice and friendly and always ready to help out. The facilities are super clean and every machine gets a wipe down after every use. Love it here and HIGHLY recommend it for those that find themselves going to the gym and getting bored or not knowing what workout to do next. read more

It says a whole lot about a place if it either has 5 star reviews or 1 star reviews. The people that go there and actually make a commitment give it 5 stars. The 1 star reviews are all about the cancellation process and how it requires people to actually read what they sign and how the policies don't make exceptions for whiny bullshit. Boohoo. My wife and I both go. My wife loves all the gimmicks. Towels and water bottles and the catchy phrases and the heart monitor and the splat points and the high fiving and interacting with coaches and members alike. As for me, I couldn't care less about the heart monitor and, in fact, stopped using it. I also have zero desire to be all touchy feely, will not high five and am there pretty much solo, except that I am around other people. But I like it there. Very much. Why? Because it's a place that is pretty much whatever you want it to be. The trainers are great and are there if you need them, but not constantly in your face either. Nobody forces you to do anything, but the fact that you are with a group of people is a good motivator to not sit back and start texting on your phone or something - and the workouts are kind of interesting, as far as workouts go. It's all about enabling you to get yourself out of your comfort zone. read more

I normally stick to running outside or doing workouts at home, but tried OTF after a friend bought me a class package for Christmas and I'm so glad I did. I was a little intimidated at first by the idea of having my stats on a screen alongside everyone else in class, but you're really only competing against yourself and everyone goes at their own pace. The workouts are totally addicting and every day is different so you don't feel like you are stuck in a routine. Closter's staff is amazing and the coaches are all so encouraging. I've tried a couple of different Orange Theory locations and this one is by far my favorite! Orange Theory as a whole, though, is a life changing place to be. Since I joined, I feel more confident and have seen a drastic difference in my body and mood. The coaches here are all supportive and extremely motivating. Each coach has a different style of coaching, and it really helps make each and every class interesting. The 60 minutes fly by and I feel so accomplished. I'm so addicted to this place that sometimes I'll even come twice a day because I can't get enough. I like that there isn't time to socialize because the workouts are so intense. I also like that i leave there drenched in sweat. I also love seeing my stats on the screen makes me push more than if I was working out on my own. I really enjoy going to Eric's classes because he has so much energy so early in the morning - his voice is clear and loud and he has fun with the class. Very Rude front desk and Arrogant Manager. Zero stars would be more appropriate. I am an old member of OTF and was super excited when I found out that they were opening a location close to my house! But now I choose to drive 30, 40 minutes instead of going to this specific location because of very bad customer service and management not wanting to deal with their short coming. I was treated in a very rude manner twice at Closter OTF. I was fuming when I walked out of the studio but then I told myself the staff is new and young they make mistakes. I will talk to the manager. I reached out to the Manager(Cris) by email and told him the story. He told me that I was telling him was very different from what his employees told him!!!! and that he has 1000 clients and somehow made me understand that he really did not care if I was happy or not! I was a just one person. How he figured who was telling the truth without really investigating both sides is beyond me. How he told me, that he didn't care about my experience was offensive. I have copies of emails back and forth from the studio and I offered at the time to go talk to him in person because I really didn't want an on going negative experience. They were not interested fixing the situation and didn't reply back. read more

The is the best and only "gym" I've ever joined. I've had trial classes (zumba, pilates, piloxing, kick boxing, cardio bar) everywhere and never joined before. Frankly, exercise and workouts are arduous and boring. This place is different. It's a new animal. The trainers/coaches are amazing. No workout is ever the same. It's circuit training, self-regulating and goal oriented so you get complete fitness at your own pace and capacity. It's also part of a network so you can use your membership when traveling so there's no excuse. They also have the best hours - as early as 5:15 and as late as 8:15 - which really matters when you work full-time. At about $12 per class, it's the best deal in town too. I've heard complaints about the cancellation policy but as long as you actually read what you sign then there are no surprises. read more

Before joining OTF I was not motivated to go to the gym at all. I made excuses for myself. I was out of shape and looking for a way to get excited about exercising again. With OTF I look forward to working out. I push myself way more than I ever would at a typical gym. All the coaches are so encouraging and they are eager to help if you have an injury like me. That said they will push you to help you reach your own personal goals. As I was signing up for the first time I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but it only took one class for me to become a believer. Beware of the Orangetheory Fitness Center in Closter, NJ. My husband and I went for a free trial on February 24th and decided to sign up...$69/month not including the monitor you have to rent each class. Every time we tried to sign up for a weekend class, all of the classes were booked. I was even texting with the person who signed us up about this. I texted saying that we didn't want to continue on March 19th. I knew you had to give 30 days notice but I was very frustrated and wanted to cancel. I never heard back but we were charged again on March 24th. When my husband called, they said that he had to come in to cancel. He did so on the 31st. We were just charged again on the 24th of April and they said it was because it wasn't 30 days in advance. So far we've been charged $414! What a mistake it was going for a "free" class!!!!!!! read more

Not accommodating at all. Tried to reschedule a 7pm class for the next day at 11:35 and they still charged me a late fee. I had a family emergency and they wouldn't even reschedule me for the next day. Also, I bought a membership and I happened to go over my classes but I didn't even realize so instead of prompting me they just began charging me for extra classes. This place is a joke! read more

I've convinced a few people to join because of the way I talk about the workouts and the results that they've seen. I'm faster, stronger, and leaner. Continuous problems with lack of spots with broken down equipment - either treadmill or tower not working . Class is sold with expectation that everyone will have access to treadmill or rowing - but they overbook assuming someone will be on bike or elliptical . High volume facility requires constant maintenance and upkeep - which is not happening . Also not very clean - wiping down your own equipment is not adequate - and bathrooms and showered subpar .
