The caliber of kids that come here bring a sense of skill, passion, and it's like a small family. The head coach of the kids program Coach Morgan brings such a high level of jujitsu but most of all really cares for the students and families as if they were his own. New mats, showers, loaner go's for kids and adults and the owner, Jay, was really cool about letting me drop in to decide on the move. He is an excellent instructor that truly cares about his students and teaching them proper jiu jitsu skills and techniques. When you sign up to join, you sign up for Justin to be your coach, so you learn directly from him. Perhaps what is most telling is that my original plan was to take up a different martial art. However, after observing how Justin taught his students, it became instantly clear to me that I had to seize the opportunity to become a student of Justin's. Truly gifted martial arts instructors can be hard to come by. I realized that this rare and special opportunity was right before me and so I approached Justin [he is very approachable!] and told him that I wanted to learn from him. That happened about a year ago and since then has been one of the best experiences of my life. Justin breaks down techniques and move sets in a way that make it clear and simple to apply, are mechanically sound, and reliable under pressure. The way he communicates that though is what initially caught my attention. Justin has the rare ability to distill down the complex into the simple -- yet in great detail. For me, great communication contains words and instruction yet goes far beyond that to also include patience, respect, the ability to understand things from the student's perspective, always being positive, being a good listener, encouraging questions, demonstrating moves from different angles until you get it, explaining not just the 'what' but the 'why' behind it; the list goes on. Humility, integrity, self-respect, respect for others... Justin leads by example. Always positive, downright friendly, and encouraging to make the learning and mat work fun! The way he carries himself is imprinted throughout Inertia BJJ and as a consequence there is a strong bond of trust, respect and camaraderie among all students. Head coach Ighor is an absolute gem to the sport. He is owner and operator and has many years under his belt and know him through my academy up in Portland. I've never heard bad things about him or his JiuJitsu. He has mounds of experience and more time and years on the mat than most people in this area. The kids program is absolutely already kicking off and is the place to be if you want to enrich your kids value in the sport . Now there's also plenty of room for hobbies and people looking to just have fun and if that turns into something more, this is a place you'll wanna be. Unfortunately, I am about 45 minutes from it so I'm only able to visit on occasion to come to an open Mat and roll around with some new people. Everyone was super nice and welcoming. Everything is absolutely clean and meticulously taken care of. If you know anything about Jiujitsu or wrestling, you'll know that cleanliness is almost tied with expertise and knowledge in criteria when looking for a spot. It might be a new name, but it's not a new person and if you look into him, you'll see that his associations are with many well-known associations and branching out into something new to bring new blood and new life to a very traditional sport. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of the training my family and I have received from Sifu Sean Kelly and Michael Wall: they provide a great mix of martial arts fundamentals along with practical application. Mo Duk Pai is a form of Kajukenbo which is an early mixed martial art that came out of Hawaii in the early 40's. This form of martial arts pulls from KArate, JUdo and jujitsu, KENpo, and BOxing and also incorporates elements of Muay Thai, Arnis/Eskrima, and Systema. Mo Duk Pai is awesome! The Mo Duk Pai community in the Portland area is a fantastic group of skilled martial artists that share their experience with all students. With three schools in Portland, there are a ton of classes you can take with some of the best people to train with. And, the classes are very affordable, especially with discounts for multiple family members. In addition to martial arts, check out Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) training with Michael Wall. I've done several classes with him and he is a fantastic resource and wealth of knowledge with respect to getting your body moving to its full range of motion and achieving your fullest potential.
