If your one of those people with many allergies, or just want to eat healthy while your on vacation, then I would suggest doing your grocery shopping at Natuur Winkel. There are "health food" stores all over called "Natuur Winkle" and most of the regular super markets such as Albert Heijn, also sell plenty of Gluten-free items. I presume it's the owner who is in the store 6 days a week since I've lived here. He is a very knowledgeable man and is on top of anything you ask. I find everything I need here. A lot of products from the USA too. BOOM! And if you think the price is higher than online because it's a speciality shop, you're wrong, his prices are very competitive with what I've found online or the quality of the product is much more pure or higher-end. I come from Los Angeles where if you want a macrobiotic, vegan, raw, super-green slice of ANYTHING, we've got it. It's pretty much amazeballs. Really. We do it up in California without any pretentious vibes at all. We're just super stoked to be healthy and that's that. Oh, we also like options. So, when I heard about Unlimited Health yesterday from my holistic masseuse (Massage Marin - I've reviewed her, she's ridiculously great), I was so pumped. Their website looks stellar - they have a cafe+juice bar+restaurant. Yoga and detox center, too, but I'm not a stretchy kind of gal. So, I grabbed a friend this morning, hopped on our bikes and rode over there, so elated for the insta-health we'd find here. The setting is bland. No music. Feels like a cold cafeteria in a hospital. Granted, it was only around 11:30am, so maybe the older women working there just don't know ambiance is a 24-7 kinda thing? Not sure. Anyway... The grocery store. It has a small, but neat assortment of raw snacks. An okay assortment of supplements. Water bottles. Green powders. Skin care. Okay, good. So, there's stuff I can buy to feel awesome. Oh, but wait. 10euros for 300 grams of a raw cereal? You're, like, kidding right? Right? 40euros for a small green powder. Um, you are SO funny, store! What a crackup. Right? Right? Bottom line: the concept is ok. However, you're getting ripped off. The same products in the US go for half the price. Maybe more. I had to make sure I was selective of what I put in my little basket, because a lot of items caught my eye. The shop is definitely well maintained. I would love to see more shops like these spread out in more communities, in the NL. The shop is small, but sometimes small is better than big, if they are offering quality verse quantity.

It's a welcome addition to the neighborhood filling in the gaps left by the Albert Heijns and Dirks. There are fresh fruits and veggies as well as prepackaged and frozen foods. There's a nice do it yourself machine that will squeeze fresh orange juice. I like the juice selections and there are a couple of nice varieties of ginger beer. Anyone up for a dark and stormy? There's some bio beer and wine as well as a great selection of "milks" ie: soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, hazelnut milk, and macadamia nut milk. There's a row of teas, coffee and coffee substitutes. Theres a nice selection of breakfast cereal, lots of nut butters and even a small section of "health" junk food chips and a nice selection of chocolate. I'm always a bit disappointed with the pasta selection but with Feduzzi's just a couple of doors down it's not an issue. The people that work there always seem friendly and by the cash register there are a couple of bins with specials where I'm encouraged to try something new at a bargain price. The place is pretty small and the super foods like goji berries and hennepseeds are pretty expensive here. There was a nice cheese section with also of stuff you could try. There were also fresh pastries and even vegetarian sushi's rolls. It seemed nice for lunch. I went home with some coconut flour, agave syrup and paprika spread (this stuff is the best and sooo addictive!) and paid 10 euros. Yeah, biological isn't that logical if you are a student. But still, I need my healthy food. Unfortunately the AH doesn't sell all these great things like coconut flour, goji berries and chia seeds.
