I think a lot of people judge how a haircut is based off of the ambience, the conversation and then the cut. As places have been reopening from the pandemic, I've had to make some changes. My old barber is massively booked up and didn't start taking appointments until the morning of the official reopening. A barber who I scheduled with online no-showed. So, after looking around on Yelp, I decided to give Original Walker's a try. On a Friday afternoon, I managed to get an appointment on Saturday morning with Reece Rivera. First of all, I love that they have an online appointment platform. It's easy to use. Next, they're only taking appointments right now due to social distancing. Yet, while waiting outside, they got me in as quickly as they could. And once you get in, unlike most barber shops, you actually get the barber shop banter between the customers and the barbers. The discussions ran the gamut from current events to hair to the military to a bit of sports. Now, let's talk about the haircut. Reece did a great job. This was the first time visiting a barber that I didn't need to tell him what needed doing. (I've had more than a few barbers expect me to know the clipper size and such.) Reese said, "You need a classic gentlemen's cut." That's exactly what he delivered. Reese took his time with my hair, deftly yielding both clippers and scissors. The results were almost perfect. (Reese thinned both sides of the front of my head a bit much, but that's something we can work on next time.) And to top it off, I've already gotten compliments on how my hair looks better than my previous haircuts. I'll absolutely be back. read more

I've tried several barbershops around Austin in my two years here. Everything from cash only hole in the walls, to fancy high end places. This was the best experience, and highest quality cut I've gotten. Arturo took the full 45 min appointment to take his time are truly deliver an artisan haircut. Straight razors to finish it off. Always glad we I can find a local, and independently run business to support. I also really liked the appointment booking process. Being able to pick a time in advance that would work well was easy. I've been in Austin for over a year and hadn't had any luck finding a legit barber. Usually, I'd either suck it up and go to Bird's for an edge up (although, they never used a straight razor or faded/blended very well) or I'd just wait until my next trip back to my regular stylist/barber in Dallas. But I was in desperate need for an edge up and a friend recommended Raymond, so I swung through today. Outside of my Dallas stylist, I've never seen any barbers pay such close attention to detail to their customers and Raymond and his crew. The shop is small, but full of soul, excellent music and, most importantly, talented barbers. Their attentiveness to the little things makes for a little bit longer of a wait than you'd expect at a chain shop, but then again, you get what you wait for -- and this cut & fade was absolutely worth the wait. Right away that made me feel comfortable. My son has mixed hair and we've had some bad cuts. They are very friendly, they engage with the kids, friendly banter back and forth. The cut was amazing! His twin sons were in the shop (it was a Saturday). They were well behaved and were even helping out with sweeping. It was a good family atmosphere. The barber (Arturo) was careful and efficient and the shop had a good atmosphere. The only thing I'd be mindful of is that the pricing is a little steep. Got my cut there, looked fine till I got home and realized it was not blended very well in the back. I've NEVER gone back to get a cut fixed, but I paid 50$ plus a 15$ tip so I Figured I'd go back and get it fixed, figured that given what I paid it wouldn't be an issue to get it fixed....but the man met me w straight up denial. I cut my own hair and I can tell a good fade. That's not to be said there aren't talented barbers here, it was only one guy who cut me up, I was just expecting to have it blended better upon return. They basically combed it over and told me I was wrong. Won't be coming here again. Place was #2 on yelp when I went, now they're #17 a week later... go figure. read more

Extremely friendly people. Some are retired veterans, if you, as I do, like to support businesses who hire them. It does get busy and take a long time, but it's because they care about how well they do their jobs and don't rush through just to finish. The gentleman who cut my son's (who has CP and is in a motor chair) hair (I forgot to get his name) was ready and eager to do his best, which was very good. Wow, these guys know their hair! I've honestly never before seen such a meticulous job of trimming hair and beards. Ray and the other barber inspected their clients' faces and scalps from every conceivable angle, taking the time to trim every last individual hair to the customers' exacting specifications. Not only were they expert barbers, but Ray even explained to the customers ahead of me why their hair lays the way it does, how to care for it, etc. And all that for like $20 + tip! With that level of service, predictably, comes an excruciating wait and seemingly little regard for the customers left waiting. The two men getting haircuts in front of me each took over an hour. Every time it looked like they were finished and were handed a mirror to inspect, they kept asking for something to be changed. I waited for over 90 minutes on a Thursday from 11:30am - 1pm to get in the chair. Around 48 minutes I was at that point of no return---I'd waited too long to justify leaving, so I stuck it out. I would highly recommend this barber shop for hair cuts and beard trims, but bring a long book, phone charger, and meal with you. It could be a while! read more

We love Ray! He is great at what he does and shows his passion, talent and attention-to-detail in each haircut. With that been said, since he does provide you with his undivided attention, the wait time is loooooong. If you live in the neighborhood this shouldn't bother you since you can come back later but if you have to drive 30 minutes (and that is without Austin's horrible traffic) and still wait almost 2 1/2 hours to get a haircut then you will think twice or find a closer barbershop to your home with awesome yelp reviews. And this is because his business is on a walk-in basis. You might get lucky and have one guy in front of you, but if there's 2 before you, be prepare to spend 3 hours sitting down. See, the problem with this business is availability. Ray is a one-man show and his clientele is growing at a fast steady pace because he is really good at his job. Raymond is by far the best barber I've had. I have a weird hair line and for the longest time settled for mediocre cuts. His precision and fade quality is bar none, and I've seen him cut all different hair/beard types from people of every race. His price is very reasonable, and I always cringe because I once made the mistake and got ripped off at Birds Barbershop on South Congress. Raymond's is $20 while I got some generic cut at Birds for twice the price...what a mistake! I will use Raymond as long as I'm in Austin and wouldn't get cut anywhere else. Hair is an important part of our image, don't settle and come give Raymond a try! I promise you'll like the cut, and he's also really funny too so it's nice to get a laugh in while you're getting cut. read more
