What a delightful find in the heart of Winnemucca As soon as we walked in, we see a restaurant filled with locals dining and enjoying the beautiful bar. We knew the food had to be good. I didn't realize I would be enjoying one of the best seafood meals ever. We started with the perfectly warmed French bread and butter. Crab croquettes perfectly blended and seasoned and fried to a golden crisp. The complimentary cabbage soup reminded me of a soup my Mom prepared growing up. Home cooked flavor! But our meals.... Wow! I had the most perfectly cooked halibut. It was light and tasty Hubby ordered the prime rib special which was thick and juicy and served with all the accompaniments. The flan was one of the best I've tasted. And I had to order the lemon blueberry marscarpone cake for the 6 hour drive home. I cannot remember the last time a meal evoked memories of childhood and thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance of this basque restaurant. Well done! Superb! read more

Always looking for great Basque food and there are two places in Winnemucca. We had one night there and picked Ormacheas. The atmosphere is nice. The service was good, the food presentation was great and the serving sizes were amazing. It just lacked flavor. I had the lamb chops and my husband had the prime rib. They looked spectacular, but they just were lacking in flavor. I asked if it was served Basque style and was told yes, but it wasn't. No beans nor vegetables. Just very disappointed especially when the bill was $100 for 2 people and that was without any beverage nor dessert. read more

Took the family to Ormacheas last night and what a great experience it was. Friendly service and great old school ambiance. We had family style dinner which included cabbage soup, baked beens, salad, and fresh backed bread. Also a nice carafe of house red wine, great choice! I had the lamb shank of God, and my wife had chicken fried steak. Both dishes were delicious and huge portions. Glad we found this hidden gem, will be back again! read more

The food was excellent. I've been coming here for 15 years from out of town. Excellent food. Atmosphere is a little run down but fine. Our (Megan) waitress was pleasant and although messed up a few times she corrected quickly. There were a couple of other waitresses who were a bit snarky. This attitude was not appreciated. We stop here twice on our yearly round trip road trip from California to Utah as this is the BEST restaurant in all of central Nevada for an amazing prime rib, lamb, and the best sherry cream penne chicken pasta with veggies you'll ever have!! The service is fantastic, we had Karen tonight. She was so wonderful and even made a vanilla ice cream with cherries and chocolate sauce for our toddler (despite it not even being a dessert menu item). Will be back next year!! read more

The Ormacheas Basque House is Basque inspired, not a true Basque style restaurant ala The Martin Hotel. The food they do serve is very good. This would be a 5 but the service aspect dropped it to a 4. Friends traveling with us wanted the Basque experience for their first time. Being Sunday, the Ormacheas was the only option. The spouses went for the clams and coconut shrimp appetizers along with a dinner salad. The bigger eaters opted for the SCAMPI ALA DIABLA and OILASKO (POLLO) ESPARRAGOSA. All the dishes were wonderful. The entree came with a choice of either soup or salad. The salad was tasty fresh Romaine with a house dressing (mayonnaise based with a Caesar and lemon influence?). Very good! The cabbage soup (in the Basque tradition) was probably the best I ever had. The clams, and two shrimp dishes were perfectly cooked. The Oilasko chicken was not overcooked and the sauce was tasty. Service was not up to the standard of the food. Our drinks didn't arrive until after (much after) the salads and soup were served. Then the gin on the rocks order morphed into a gin and tonic. After waiting a while (like time to eat the soup) for a server, I took the drink back to the bar to be replaced. The server removed the salad plates from the table prior to delivery of the entree. She also removed the fork and knife used. The fork wasn't a problem as there were two of them. But the only knife was removed and not replaced. Once again, after trying to find a server (the place wasn't very busy with only three tables occupied and at least three servers around) we borrowed the utensil setups from a nearby table. Our friends, and we, really enjoyed our meals. As for the true Basque dining experience, that will have to wait for another time. read more

We were there with some friends from Australian Shepherd Nationals last month. Our waitress was amazing- one of our party wrote a note telling her boss she ws a keeper, and we all signed it. 4 of us had the prime rib, and it was MASSIVE. I had leftovers for lunch twice! In town for a hunt and we decided to check out Ormacheas. We were seated straight-away and wait staff promptly took our drink and food order. First, we both ordered the Bulleit Rye Old Fashioned which was spot on. Seriously, so good! Kudos to the bartender! Second, we both ordered the chicken fried steak which was ridiculously big and tasted great with a side of mashed potatoes. Being from Oklahoma, I've had REALLY good chicken fried steak, but, this was GREAT! Seriously! Dinner comes with salad and beans. Salad was really good (didn't eat any of the beans, but, my compadre liked 'em)! Overall outstanding dinner from the courteous, prompt, helpful wait staff, great cocktails (thanks bartender) and food (thanks kitchen Chef & team)! What else can you ask for? While this incarnation of Ormacheas feels decidedly less basque than others, most of the food is very good. I dislike the high prices given the lack of classic Basque sides with dinner. Last time in, the prime rib was just about the best I've had anywhere. They get credit for that! On downside, they don't know how to make a croquetta. Theirs are awful, taste pasty and filled with instant mashed potatoes. Ruined my night. I so love a good croquetta. Service is prompt and efficient. Ambiance is nice. This is the only five star restaurant in Winnemucca. The other Basque restaurant is the McDnald's of Basque. Chicken fried steak you can cut with a fork even the leftovers are better than the other place the next day. They know how to make a good martini and a good old fashioned. Passing through town, hungry and tired.. this place was a welcome blessing!!! Wow, the wait staff is beautiful! Literally! The food comes piping hot, huge portions and is truly delicious!! We had the Pollo Esparragosa- variety of chicken, pasta, asparagus and sun dried tomatoes in sherry sauce. The chicken fried steak and mash potatoes- fried coating was especially savory. The halibut was fresh as if we were sea side!! I'm not kidding!! Then, we ordered the chocolate cake and it was warm and melted in your mouth moist!! Typically the food here is pretty good. I have had some good experiences and not so good experiences. The service is always great although the kitchen can be inconsistent for example, once I ordered the lamb shank and it came out cold at the bone. About 3 weeks ago we had the filet mignon in both steaks were what we thought overcooked. It was kind of merely and gray on the inside which is telling me it's a possibility that the stakes have been frozen at one time. They need to come up with better suit ideas. Cabbage soup is getting a little bit boring. They do make good strong cocktails and the restaurant has a very nice decor. I would suggest dining here any other day but sunday. Each time we've been in on Sunday it's a limited menu and they are out of certain things. An example of that was a filet mignon one night and their bread pudding for dessert. All in all it is an okay place to dine although the consistency is questionable. read more

First visit and it was by design traveling to Las Vegas for an event. Was looking for a different route from Portland than the typical Reno stop. Very pleased with the food and service here. Started with the traditional Picon Punch, croquettes with chorizo as an appetizer. House salad with garlic vinaigrette and Basque beans. Fabulous mains; wife had lamb chops (sourced from 1875 Ranch, a supplier to Cowboy Dinner Tree in Silver Lake, OR) and I had a tender filet. Basque cheesecake for dessert. This is a quaint small town restaurant with decent food and a very friendly, efficient staff. The three stars are for the staff. What ruined our dining experience was the owner, Jake, storming around the dining room, like a tyrant, berating an employee and eventually telling her "she's not making him any money" and to "get the f**k out of here" loud enough for us to hear it across the room. The tension in the room was thick and it was obvious the rest of the staff were walking on eggshells avoiding this angry, vicious bully. I feel sorry for his staff for the way they are treated by him and would not recommend supporting a business owner that is so cruel and unprofessional. read more

We were passing through on our way from Oregon to Colorado and stopped in not knowing what to expect. We were surprised and impressed; the food was VERY good, the service was great and the drinks were perfect. I was also impressed by the fact that they have decor that features plenty of fabric, which deadens some of the noise; one of the few places I've dined at that didn't sound like bedlam when there are many diners. Although the place was pretty full, we had a lovely, reasonably quiet, romantic diner. I would unhesitatingly recommend it. We were looking for a unique and tasty meal for our stop over in Winnemucca and we found it here. I saw reviews that said this is not true Basque food. But since I am not aware of what this entails, I can tell you, we were perfectly pleased with the food and service. My husband enjoyed an excellent steak and I had a great fish dish. Black bean soup also very, very good. Entrees: Steelhead Trout & Pork Chop. Again, delicious! Perfectly prepared & wonderfully presented. The biggest surprise was the size of the pork chop! Honestly, I challenge anyone to find a pork chop the suze of the one served here. Practcally the size of the dinner plate. It was HUGE! HUGE! We were traveling so took the leftovers with us & no kidding, we got 2 more meals out of that one pork chop! Like the chowder, probably the best pork chop ever. We'd eaten here many times in times of old. Had heard that it had closed. Passing through town Sunday, it appeared to be open again! We had dinner that evening and were very pleased with the service and culinary offerings: the lamb chops were perfect and the 12oz ribeye (prime) was beautifully done. A great old room (many brands from local ranches on back wall), and a nice little wood bar. The vibe reminded me of the old days. Will stop here again next visit to Winnemucca. read more

if we were in vegas I would be more critical about the quality of the ribeye we ordered. but, we are not in vegas. we are in winnemucca and by those standards it was world class. service was great. we made reservations easily, they gave us a nice table, and everybody we encountered was pleasant. wine was surprisingly good. they were out of the tempranillo we originally wanted, but they offered a lovely rioja in its place. the wine glasses were 10/10 which is legitimately important. salad was good, asparagus was good. it was the best steak we've eaten in winnemucca read more

Not your typical Basque restaurant, where you sit and eat family style. Nice dining room. Had the salad with beans on top. That was different but great. Split the lamb dinner with my husband and garlic mashed potatoes. Very tender lamb. A little heavy on the garlic covering the lamb but wasn't an issue. A little expensive but as we split we had room for dessert. Had the Basque cheesecake, with strawberries sauce on top. Definitely a winner. The wait staff was friendly and professional. read more

I had an excellent 18oz Ribeye. It was excellent and is recommended. I will go back the next time I travel to this town.
