WOW!!! I stopped by Ortu Leather while I was in fashion district in LA. This was my first time shopping for leather, ever, and I can say that I was very satisfied with my purchase. I paid $68 for three hides of leather. Two hides were $20 each and the other one was $3.50 per foot. The quality of the leather is superb. Not only was I very impressed by the quality and price of the leather, but also I was very pleased with the customer service. The staff asked me what I was looking for, what project I was trying to accomplish and what was my budget, to help accommodate my needs. Was told they had lots of samples exactly like what I wanted (specifically 12) so drove over to see. First no one acknowledged my presence, finally I got someone to help me and it became clear immediately that they didn't have what I was looking for. I went to Ortu leather earlier this morning. I was kind of weirded out that it is in a apartment or condo type building and you have to sign in. but i went ahead and went in. I was looking for a large piece of leather but not looking to buy a whole hide for my Halloween project. most places only have scraps that are only a few inches wide and whole hides(sav more leather). I am so glad I went in. I was greated right away and shown around. They have a large selection of small hides that are a few feet for $20 along with larger full hides that they sell by the square foot. I found exactly what color I wanted and was even helped out finding the largest possible piece in the $20 section. They also have a better selection of scraps that they sell by the pound. $6/pound. and these were actually nice usable scraps! The personal attention, the help along the way, and spacious layout made m so comfortable. I will be returning for any additional leather needs. P.S. most their leather seemed to be the clothes/upholstery type. read more

After meeting with Frank and Raphael for a consultation to discuss the production of a leather jacket, I left wholly unimpressed with the lack of preparedness on ORTU's part. They had nothing to display, no catalog of swatches, no examples of finished work, took no measurements, showed no interest in how a jacket of their making might fit me specifically, and within the first five minutes informed me that I would be responsible for acquiring, at minimum, material for the lining of my jacket, not the "bespoke" experience expected, particularly for an organization with the reputation and yelp reviews that state otherwise. Frank conducted my consultation and Raphael sat silently at his desk contributing nothing aside from facilitating the $200 payment for the meeting at its conclusion. Frank was patronizing and generally gave me the impression he was totally uninterested. Before i met with ORTU, I was quoted the price of an average leather jacket, by Raphael, as costing between $1,000 and $2,500. At the end of our meeting I was told the estimated total cost for the finished product would be $2,300, which granted is within the original quote, but given the simple design, lack of features and very average and standard cow leather selected, I expected it to be on the lesser side of the original quote. That final price also does not include the consultation, or the material I would have had to source, buy, and supply to ORTU for the lining. The experience felt gross, as ORTU's air of undeserved entitlement overshadowed any redeemable work they may have done. I will not be conducting any business with them and ,in the future, will avoid doing business with them. read more
