I had wanted to visit Osteria Sanso for many years, and was excited when a work 'do' had been booked there. As a boisterous group of 30 people we were seated in the main entrance over 3 table settings. That must have been an overwhelming welcome to the 4 or 5 intimate couples that arrived over the next hour. Service was attentive from the server; she had a lot of people to serve, and she was alone. After orders were taken, the owner Tony came out to ask if we wanted bread. No one answered straight away, so he mocked us by making eating motions and spreading butter, saying "Y'know, bread and butter? You understand?" Only enough for 8 people was brought out. At one stage a friend came to chat at our table with the guest of honour, and Tony bee-lined him, admonishing him for not staying on his own table. Our friend explained he was just chatting, Tony replying "Yes, but we're serving, it's no good!". Meals were not being served at that time. After a long wait for the main meal, it was disappointing. A thin slice of porterhouse, overcooked (I ordered medium rare), but the potatoes and the extra rocket salad were good. Payment was a nightmare. The waitress asked if we could wait for the bill to be presented to the organiser, work out what we owed the come up and pay. No problems, but when I approached to pay my amount, Tony complained yet again about what a mess this will make, how we can't follow rules, we (the customers) always make mistakes and can't get it right. The poor waitress stood behind him helpless and embarrassed. A the final 6 guests chatted at the end of the night, the sandwich board was brought in from the street, the windows boarded up (literally) and the ceiling fans were turned off... not one word of thanks from the woman doing it. Even the chef scuttled out the door with his head down with no pride in his work. Without the waitress, the night would have been a total train wreck. There is no way I will ever reccomend or return to Osteria Sanso. Tony is long past his use-by date, and has no respect for his paying customers. read more
