CHURCH OF OUR LADY CROWNED
The Church of Our Lady Crowned, the parish church of Upper Mayfield, was completed (by P.J. Hegarty Ltd, not the original contractor) in 1962, the last of a circle of churches built around the city by Bishop Lucey in the seven years up to then. The parish itself was established in 1979 as part of a local re-organisation.
The architects were Boyd Barrett. The design was an open plan cone shaped building with the altar placed at the apex of the cone and roof sloping towards the sanctuary. The front and inside of the church are quite attractive but the large roof is not.
The church is a naturally a focal point for the community and only last Thursday week, the boys and girls from the local schools were confirmed there. On May 23rd, the annual procession to the Lotamore Grotto takes place. For more information, see http://www.olcmayfield.ie read more
