Sour and Spicy Beef Noodle Soup & Shrimp Dumplings
Christine G.

If you eat where the locals do, you'll be rewarded. Excellent home style restaurant with great service and lovely tasty dishes. The soup noodles were better than the dry noodles my hubby ordered, but still tasty. The shrimp dumplings were devine and the sour and spicy broth was addictive.

I went with a Chinese family who enjoyed the food. However, I did not enjoy the food and it was not a fit with my personal taste profile. Ox king special noodle soup had a rich broth. I thought it was a bit too salty. Everyone finished their noodle dishes so maybe stick to those staple dishes. Xiao long bao was ok / pretty standard. The other dishes were not so good. Braised pork was dry. Wonton had no chili oil, sauce was a strong sesame paste. Beef biang had an overwhelming salty thick sauce. There was a pitched sound the entire time coming from machinery in the restaurant which was off putting.

Rice dumplings were delicious! We loved it! Would definitely return again for the Ox King Noodle Soup!

Great noodles and soup bases! We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner, especially the Ox King Noodle Soup and rice dumplings.

Listen if you are in the downtown victoria area hotel somewhere walk about 20 minutes to this hidden gem. Great noodles and broth with a good selection of different types of soup and rice dishes as well as appetizers. Service is fast and efficient and friendly. Price is fairly reasonable. Serving sizes are good, if you're hungry or you can opt for sharing! Highly recommended when in Victoria BC

The beef is not real meat, just junk. There are about 5 pieces in the noodles and no one is eatable. Never go there again!

Excellent noodles! Reliable service. More of a take-out option than a dine-in choice, but otherwise we love it.

Came here with some coworkers...restaurant was too small to sit in even though there were no other guests! Not a welcoming place.

This place is great! Definitely measured up to the noodle places in New York and Seattle.

I ate the ChongQing noodles with a side of lamb skewers. Both were very delicious. I recommend it.

Authentic Chinese food, unlike 90% of other Chinese restaurants outside of China. I'm glad I chose this one in my one day tour to Victoria!

This restaurant was recommended to us for its gluten free menu ootions and it didn't disappoint…read more We were a party of 3, our youngest son and myself are very sensitive celiacs and the food passed the test with flying colours. My wife is not, and she enjoyed the food immensely. Delicious choices, fast and attentive service. We'll be back.

We were coming to the end of our 22-day cruise to Alaska and had been dying for some Chinese food…read more The reviews on yelp for J & J appeared to be pretty good so we decided to go for a walk. Another yelper stated that "it's not the most authentic Chinese food you'll come across...". While he goes on to say that "by Victoria standards, it's up there... I'll take this moment to give him food for thought. My best friend is Chinese. I'm Chinese. Our grandmothers and our mothers made wonton for us at home. I, on the rare occasion, will wrap my own wonton. None of the five wontons we make will taste the same because we use different ingredients or the same ingredients in different measures. That does not make any of our wontons less than authentic than the others. We entered and were immediately greeted. We were directed to a four-top and presented with menus and water and/or tea. We perused the menu and decided to go with: Pan Fried Pot Stickers - 5 - They're not on the lunch menu but they are available. Shanghai Thick Noodles - 5 - A wonderful plate of deliciousness. Wor Wonton with Mixed Wonton - 5 - A simple clean bowl of Wor Wonton. They offer Pork or Shrimp or Mixed. I was hoping that Mixed had both Pork AND shrimp in them but that would force them to wrap three different styles instead of two. I ordered the Mixed just to compare the flavors. Both were delicious. On a subsequent visit, I would want to try their Hot & Sour Soup with 12 Shrimp Won Ton added. Service was quick and courteous. I'm sorry that we don't live closer but there are many excellent Chinese restaurants where we live too.

Beef with Snow Peas ($18.95): a little too saucy for my liking, but alright.

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE 3.5 stars: it's decent and a nice…read morechange of pace from the rest of the food court. Quality along Japanese cuisine lines however, faces stiff competition from the nearby Hiro Sushi Xpress, which is arguably higher in every regard. === 2. FOOD Chicken Teriyaki ($11.95): With your choice of white or brown rice, you get diced chicken with 0 to 2 scoops of teriyaki sauce and a variety of griddle-fried, chopped vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, and carrots. Adding $4.50 makes any meal a "bento", where you can choose two sides; I happened to choose a 4-piece California Roll and 2-pieces of shrimp tempura. The food is fine, but the nearby Hiro Sushi Xpress just a couple of shops down from the food court seems to have higher quality food in all regards: better chicken, better veg, better California rolls, etc. === 3. SERVICE The service seems fine; the food is served relatively quick. However, who you get serving you seems to be one of two cooks at the griddle and there's no number for your order, just callouts of food. Choosing a popular dish like teriyaki chicken is something that prompts multiple people to step forward, which can cause confusion. Water is available self-serve with plastic cups at the end of the kiosk. === 4. ENVIRONMENT Bring one, bring all to the Hillside Centre food court: big, bright, and open, it's good room for everyone and their wheelchairs and baby strollers, if you have them. Parking is also easy to get in the spacious mall lot outside.
