We did the Chinese thing upon arriving in Victoria. We had to get Chinese food while on vacation. Ox King was the first and only restaurant that we went to. We arrived at about 3 and was promptly seated. We ordered the XLB, a beef noodle stew, and a pork noodle soup. The food was good. I liked their XLB as it was very soupy. The beef stew stew noodle soup was nice and beefy. It had plenty of beef and tendon. Service was good. We observed the boss lady. The boss lady was good. I went with a Chinese family who enjoyed the food. However, I did not enjoy the food and it was not a fit with my personal taste profile. Ox king special noodle soup had a rich broth. I thought it was a bit too salty. Everyone finished their noodle dishes so maybe stick to those staple dishes. Xiao long bao was ok / pretty standard. The other dishes were not so good. Braised pork was dry. Wonton had no chili oil, sauce was a strong sesame paste. Beef biang had an overwhelming salty thick sauce. There was a pitched sound the entire time coming from machinery in the restaurant which was off putting. read more

Gonna rate from best to worst: Szechuan beef noodles: excellent. Deep and flavorful broth. Noodles silky and chewy. Regular braised beef noodles: soup is not as complex, but you get a different cut of beef. More tender and perfectly braised brisket pieces. Noodles just as good. Bing: I got it without meat. Definitely hits some really good Xinjiang-ish notes with skill and grace, with the heavy use of sesame paste, and the really lovely way that heat and spices are used. Everyone already knows it's awesome, and so should you. Heartily recommend the small/to-go hot pot, which is super dense with flavour, and a great way to get lots of excellent things. Also lamb skewers. I could just eat dozens of their lamb skewers. It's a happy place for people who want to be happy from food. Also it's cramped as heck and there's room for like very few people to sit and you should get things to go if you possibly can and whatever. The owner is ambitious and also clearly working at capacity to keep things rolling. Would love to see them grow, but totally understand why they may not want that. Authentic Chinese food, unlike 90% of other Chinese restaurants outside of China. I'm glad I chose this one in my one day tour to Victoria!
