I never miss an opportunity to dine at Ox when I am in Portland if I can help it. Gabi and Greg are true rockstars in the kitchen, and I've followed them everywhere that they have cooked since Napa Valley in the late 90s. The restaurant is intimate and with tall ceilings and brick walls surrounding the stunning wood fire grill that is manned by masters of their craft. The clam chowder is the best in the world, with a smoked and roasted bone marrow topped with slices of jalapeno that I pray will never leave the menu. Their Asado Argentino for 2 is central to the dining experience here, and their vegetable side dishes are always a draw and not an afterthought. First time in portland and gave this place a try. Recommend that you get a reservation or plan to wait an hour or so. They do have a bar on the side which is pretty neat where you can order drinks while you wait. We ordered the shared meat course which was really good. Had the oysters which were really fresh. Service was phenomenal and the majority of the dishes we ordered were superb. I knocked off one star because there were a few dishes that didn't impress me. I'm so glad this restaurant is open during covid. We made reservations online for outdoor seating which is great during this time. I appreciate the steps they've taken for our safety. Parties are seated more than 6 ft apart and each table has their own garbage for disposable ware and serving table (everything is disposable except the silverware). I didn't mind the change at all. If anything it made me feel more safe. The food is excellent! They cook their meats right. We got the Asado Argentino for two as well as the clam chowder and shiitake mushrooms for sides. It is more than enough food and I feel that I am no longer iron deficient. I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order really. That skirt steak is something else though. Excellent restaurant! It's refreshing to see a business reinvent itself during the pandemic to be able to make money without compromising on quality. Majority of the dishware is compostable and the wait staff is respecting physical distancing. The entire parking lot has been made into an outside restaurant. The food was AMAZING. Half a dozen oysters were well served and the cheese and corn empanada was something we've never had before. For the main entree we got the 8oz filet, the 16oz ribeye, mushrooms, and a vegetable medley. All washed down with a rosé and Syrah. Everything was well prepared. We happened to visit Portland the first week they reopened since the pandemic shut downs happened. Such luck! Meat and veggies. That's my preferred way to eat lately. Ox opened a year before I moved to Alaska...and I always wanted to try it, but couldn't seem to wrangle up a dinner-mate that wanted to deal with the wait and the cost of visiting. I was back in Oregon for a wedding, and I went here to hang out with an old friend and we shared various plates of meats and veggies, everything was excellent. Special props to the lamb, loved the aromatics of the singed rosemary. It's absolutely worth the cost of admission. (I'm biased on the pricing though, this place is downright cheap compared to Alaska restaurant markups!) The only negative is that the wait is often very long and you can't make a reservation unless you have a large party. It's well worth it though. We were celebrating an early Valentines Day dinner and Ox did not disappoint. Good food, good vibes/atmosphere, and our server was great. Started with complimentary butternut squash soup which was rich and creamy. We then shared the beef empanadas and clam chowder with smoked bone marrow for appetizers - both flavorful and had just the right amount of heat without being overwhelming. I had ordered the stardust to drink and it was well made. For the main entree we split the cowboy steak that came with a chimichurri sauce and paired this with the fire roasted potatoes and brussel sprouts. Main course was flavorful, filling, and delicious. The food was exciting and fresh. They brought us a sample of winter squash soup that was such a great start to a very good meal. I could eat it every cold day and will try to recreate that recipe. The clam chowder was just as great as advertised and reviewed. We tried the Asado Argentino for two which was a great introduction to the cuisine. The service was flawless. An unbelievable dining experience there last night. Started with a cocktail in bar before dinner and the great service started there. Dinner was fresh sesame baguette, "life changing" clam chowder which come with bone marrow and fresh clams still in the shell. Main courses of lamb and pork which were delicious and cooked perfect. Sides of a radicchio salad and a gnudi dish. Dessert was an apple accented tres leches cake. The waiter and support staff were awesome, attentive, informative and friendly. We visited Ox for our anniversary. The food and service was amazing! We really enjoyed the complimentary cold cauliflower soup - what a fun treat! We ordered two appetizers, the beef empanada and the crab bruschetta. The crab bruschetta was our favorite of the two but they were both delicious. For dinner, we selected the lamb chops, skirt steak, cauliflower, and roasted potatoes. It was all so delicious but my absolute favorite was the cauliflower dish. It had such amazing flavors I couldn't resist eating several bites even though I was so full. The herb dipping sauces they brought for the meats added another layer of delicious on top of the perfectly cooked meats. For our next visit, we would probably order the same exact dishes with the exception of the empanada; we ended up bringing home quite a bit of our meal because the portions were so generous. If you want to be blown away by perfectly cooked meat and a unique take on a steakhouse, go to Ox. Myself and 3 others went to Ox for my boyfriends birthday. You definitely want to make reservations, this place fills up. The ambiance is cozy, classy, romantic - dim lighting (bring your reading glasses dim). The wood fired oven is up front so you can watch the meat cooking in all its delicious glory. We started of course with bread and chimichurri and were given complimentary samples of cream of mushroom soup, which was exceptional. The bread is perfect, the chimichurri could have used a tad more vinegar but it was still great. We ordered eggplant jojo's which were on top of this incredible cucumber pico and had toasted corn - the accompaniments to the jojo's stole the show. We also had the Dungennes crab bruschetta, so delicious! We also ordered one of each empanada, which honestly we could have skipped mostly because they are GIANT but I also wasn't crazy impressed with the flavor. The crust, however was perfect, crispy yet flaky. For our mains we had the scallop risotto, rib eye and the maple-brined pork loin. The risotto was perfectly cooked and exceptionally flavorful. Rib eye also wonderfully cooked to a medium-rare, maybe even closer to rare and it was such a good piece of meat. The star of the entire night was the pork loin chop. Hands down the best pork chop I've ever had anywhere. It was so uniquely flavored and so tender, truly amazing. I would eat that pork chop every single day if I could. We also had the potatoes and heirloom carrots, which we didn't need as we clearly over ordered but they too were perfect. Honestly you can't expect much from carrots but they were so good! I cannot warn enough about how easy it is to over-order. The portions are HUGE. Super great to come with a group! There were a few items I wasn't totally impressed with but since I can't give half-stars on yelp this is definitely more of a 5-star than 4-star place based on how perfect all the meat was alone! read more

Consistently among the most memorable meals I've ever eaten in my life and among one of the best restaurants I've ever dined at in the world. What makes OX a destination worthy of visiting are: (1) Menu items you are not likely to enjoy elsewhere, like shortbreads, blood sausage, bone marrow and tripe, all of which are outstanding. (2) In my opinion, among the attributes that make a great chef is ones ability to take otherwise bland, or what would be considered peasant food, and transforming them into something phenomenal. Example, when I asked our waitress what was her favorite appetizer on the menu she recommended an Italian White Bean casserole, which did not sound very exciting, but which was one of the best things I've ever tasted in my life. Or a small cup of Cauliflower soup that was complements of the chef to begin our meal that was silky rich and deeply complex. Next up we were served a Radicchio salad that was perfectly balanced. Had our evening ended right there the meal would have been memorable; and this was before we even started our main course. (3) Everything is wood-fired and cooked over herbs that create an intense aroma. My first time at Argentinian restaurant. We were party of 5 ( me, my husband and his co-workers) and we got good food and service. My meal was perfect. I ordered 6 oysters and rose. Me and my husband shared his russet potatoes side dish. It was so yummy. My husband didn't like his rack of lamb because this meat was not chewable and his co-worker also took meat which had 60% of fat in that. There were not so happy with their order. Other guy in our party said grad-fed beef was good. Side dishes were all excellent I think we took everything (mushrooms, carrots with squash, potatoes,Brussels sprouts..) We arrived early enough before the crowd because we read that no reservations were accepted. The food didn't seem as filling as it turned out to be. Everything was incredibly rich, and some of it on the saltier side not necessarily more flavor. The scallops were a bit disappointing as they kind of lacked flavor. The temperature of the restaurant was incredibly warm, it wasn't just the ovens but it was like a sauna. Super muggy and super hot. The wait staff were very friendly, but almost kind of awkward because they were standing close and felt like they were watching over us a bit too intently. We flew in later in the evening and decided we'd go get some late night steak to kickoff our vacation. They have a cocktail lounge called Whey Bar next door if you'd like to drink while you wait. There is nothing special or fancy at OX and I believe that's what makes it so ironically unique. They serve an Argentinian style grilled meat cuisine using local Jacobsen sea salt and fire. Quite simple, right? Fire and salt. The meat was cooked and served perfectly medium rare. It didn't look all that great, but each bite yielded powerful salty fatty fire flavors and I couldn't get enough. Hats off to the chef. I love this place and highly recommend to anyone.
