Being from out of town and looking for somewhere nice to eat we were pleasantly surprised…read more The service was fast and fantastic. Our meals were brought out fast (being a Saturday and busy i was suprised how fast it came out) with the kids meal only 1-2 minutes before our own. We had ordered oysters kilpatrick as a starter, the oysters were lost in the sauce and did not taste fresh. At $18 for 6 we were expecting fresh oysters however we only had 2 faults and the oysters were one. For mains we had eyefilet wrapped in bacon with chips and salad. The steak was cooked to perfection and nice and tender. The mushroom gravy was to die for! The only other fault with our experience was the childs desert. For a $3 fruit salad i was not expecting tinned fruit salad with a dab of whipped cream. :/ Price wise, it is expensive but well worth it. I will definatly be back next time i come to town.

Hungry and keen to get in on the action, I acted on the recommendation of a local friend and visited the Criterion. Well kept, welcoming and full of interesting memorabilia, the Criterion failed to disappoint. Sure, I was spoiled for entertainment during Beef Week, but I am certain from the reviews of locals that this is a great spot for a hearty meal and a frosty beverage at any time. Despite the mad rush, my juicy, tender rump was presented to me in a timely manner, and my glass of Kilkenny was delicious to boot. The meal sizes are extremely generous, so I advise visiting on an empty stomach. The "Cri" is an excellent choice for an authentic Aussie meal, in the heart of Australia's beef growing region. Treat yourself to a prime rump or sizzling sirloin, and you won't be disappointed.

Three out of five stars!…read more I stayed here recently when I was in town on business. We booked at the last minute and it was all that was available for our price range. I did not have high hopes. But it turns out that my fears were unfounded. The room is really clean and looks like it was decorated not too long ago. I can attest to the fact that the fire alarm works as my friend accidentally set it off while we were there. And there is a gym available (I did not go myself) and lots of parking. It is across the road from the river, so it is in quite a good location. Overall it was a pleasant place to stay and I would stay again

Four out of five unexpected delights!…read more I went to this place when I was in Rocky recently and I was pleasantly surprised. The Heritage is situated right on the river. The décor was fun and cool and there is an outdoor area on the side facing the river. The restaurant is very definitely a restaurant and not a pub. Food is also available from the bar (i.e. a limited/smaller version of the restaurant menu). The food was all very nice - I had the eggplant parma ($18) with a side dish of wok tossed Asian vegetables ($5). I thought it was very tasty, though I would say my 'Asian' vegetables were really regular vegetables + wombok. Not sure that counts as Asian, but it was still tasty. My companions had the porterhouse steaks ($24). Note that the steaks don't come with any side dishes and they must all be purchased extra for $5 each. However, there is a big range of side dishes (chips, vegetables, salads, 'Asian' vegetables etc). I thought the menu was a bit of fun - the seafood is in the 'No legs' section, poultry is in the 'Two legs' and steaks are under 'Four legs' (Only in Oz). Don't let that put you off, though; the restaurant actually has a bit of classy yet trendy vibe. There was quite a lot of street parking available and this place was walking distance from my hotel so it was in a good location. The waitress was lovely and efficient and more than happy for us to split the bill. Be warned - The restaurant isn't huge. We went on a Monday night and at about 7:30 they were turning people away. I later saw those people turned away eating at the bar so they didn't go far. Overall, I found the Heritage to be a pleasant and unexpected surprise, when I had the stereotypical thoughts that it was going to be an ordinary regional pub. I will definitely be coming back and it is likely where I will be taking my boss when she comes up! Cheers.

The reception, the restaurant and some rooms are in the heritage listed Rockhampton TAFE College and there is another building with the cheaper contemporary rooms. We booked a Super King Room in the contemporary wing and the room and bathroom were quite spacious (although we're not convinced that they were 48 m2), comfortable and well appointed. The parking lot is located conveniently right next to the hotel but it is not secured - anyone from the street can walk in. The room rates are very reasonable given the central CBD location and especially as your room is serviced daily (except for Sundays & Public Holidays - where you'll just receive new towels). This place is, quite literally, a working farm and cattle ranch. The owners have built two small cabins and a lodge for overnight guests. We stayed in a cabin which was really a miniature wood house. We had a front porch and the back porch overlooked the creek -- they have kayaks if you want to go for a paddle and a great stone BBQ pit in the yard. The king-size bed had an old-fashioned quilt and was very comfortable. There is a full kitchen, dining room table and living area. It is very rustic in style and homey. They offer breakfast baskets as well as tours of the farm. While it was a bit of a drive down a dirt road to get there, the road was flat and very-well graded and cared for. The owners are descendants of the original farm owner and very friendly (as is most everyone in Australia!). A wonderful, off-the-beaten-path place and very close to Capricorn Caves. Definitely check it out if you get the chance.
