We had an excellent experience with Scott and his team. They had planned our own house renovation twenty years ago; now it's time to help my mom with hers. I had a fire May 17 during Covid. Went to apply for restoration permits from the fire architect only to find out Oyster Bay drafting Previously submitted the previous owners plans with the previous owners names on it when were trying to close permits in 2011. The person in charge of my case left and Scott showed no interest in rectifying the problem. My fire architect and I I called for 3 weeks and no real interest to help us at all. Now we have to re do all of there work. Basically they took my money and ran. I have two other people who have had to waste there time and money with them as well. read more

Follow up: A family disagreement necessitated a huge scale-down for the original renovations to my mom's house. When I called Scott in a panic, he was very calm, courteous, and helpful. He changed the original plans free of cost and took care of things with our unhelpful and unpleasant village building inspector (of course, my sisters refused to contact the building inspector, so had not Scott paved the way, I would have had to deal with the building inspector all by myself). The situation was SO MUCH BETTER once Scott adjusted our plans to meet the reality of the family situation. Everything sailed smoothly through, and the house looks BEAUTIFUL, even though the original plans had to be scaled down. I am surprised to see anything but 100 percent positive reviews for this kind, understanding, and talented architect. I was practically destroyed by my sisters' refusal to carry through with the original renovations on my mom's house, even though it was their plan to begin with; but Scott and his team guided us through the paperwork and the emotional baggage that came with "switching horses mid-stream." read more

They bent over backwards to accommodate my requests, and I have nothing but the upmost respect for them. Scott Kahn, the architect, after reading my review here on Yelp emailed me to ask me to delete it! Delete it? It's 100% a true, albeit, negative review. I forgot to mention in the review one more thing. After my plans were finally approved and final, I asked Scott if he could make me a few copies so I could have them for a potential contractor and other trades people along the route of building my home. His reply to me was, 'You're better off making them yourself!!!' After paying A LOT of money to Oyster Bay Drifting I had to foot the bill at a drafting store for copies. That's a poor businessman. It's a great way to leave a bad taste with a client as you're shaking hands and walking out the door at the end. No, Scott. I will not delete the truth. If it forewarns and helps at least one person, then it served a positive purpose. read more

As many people in Long Island, we were effected by Hurricane Sandy and needed to "REBUILD" from scratch. Scott and his team at Oyster Bay Drafting helped us TREMENDOUSLY threw this dreadful process. My experience with Oyster Bay Drafting was completely negative. Scott Kahn is unprofessional and deceitful. I hired him to draw plans for an existing deck and then expedite the process with the Town of Oyster Bay. It took more than eight weeks just to get the drawing. It was impossible to ever reach anyone at the business by phone or by email. When the plans were finally submitted I found out that they had no expediting experience at all even though their website claims a fantastic relationship with the town. When I reminded Scott Kahn about what he told me he could do to expedite the plans, he said it was not written in the contract. So beware if expediting or quick service is what you are looking for. I am surprised to see such a negative review about Scott Kahn. I don't mean to disagree or discredit anyone...everyone has their own experience, and I am sorry to see how tough it was for someone else. I feel compelled though to at least tell about my experience, since it was so different. I called Oyster Bay Drafting based on the name, bec I thought they'd know all of the codes and rules applicable to the house we were going to build in that town. My first call was to see if someone could come down to look at the property we were thinking of purchasing and demolishing in order to build new, and Scott met me and the GC there a couple of days later. He was very informative, and between both guys, I knew I wanted to buy the house. So Scott started giving us professional advice before he even knew he'd have the job. The first time we met to discuss the actual plans, he asked me to tell him what my exact vision for the house was. He wanted to know about our lifestyle and how my taste went and I explained how the house, not only needed to accommodate my severely disabled husband, but make it a dream for him to function in, and how I wanted it wide open and full of light. He started rough drawing right away and I just loved watching my ideas come to life. With each line drawn he'd say, "is this what you mean" or "what do you think of this." I talked and talked and spoke up on everything, which he genuinely seemed to appreciate, I think bec it gave him a definite direction and goal. He gave me different options for a ramp vs elevator, and innovative ideas in the bathroom, room size, widow placement, etc., all of which I wanted to hear, and sometimes I'd follow his way, and sometimes I'd insist on my unorthodox way, at which time he'd end up expanding on it and making it even better. I felt that he really enjoyed giving life to my vision, and I appreciated all of his input and expertise on top of it, i.e., he'd say, I like your idea for the corner sink with two windows touching, but just be aware that bec of building codes, it will look more like this...., etc. Once he really understood what I was going for, he kept showing me more ideas in that vein, and I was getting more excited about the house with each draft. Of course it takes a few sit-down meetings at the office (sometimes weeks apart) to refine and perfect the plans, but I found that I'd get better and braver ideas in between drafts, like adding a linear gas fireplace when there was no obvious place for it, or a window seat in the guest bedroom that caused him to change the whole front structure, and he would actually be happy to hear them and make all the changes and revisions necessary even though it meant scrapping some of the time and work previously put in. He clearly wanted me to be happy with the home. Did it take more time than I had imagined and wanted...yes, but I have to say I wouldn't change a thing bec by the time our plans were finalized, we had our absolute dream home (and still affordable!) in the works. From there we had variances and permits, and it all took a lot more time than anticipated bec each trade that would come in - whether it was foundation, plumbing, electric, HVAC etc- needed permits and inspections. It all really is much more stressful than I could have imagined, and I was warned by 2 diff friends who had done it. As for Scott's part though, he was there for us throughout, and I called him for everything bec I was doing this on my own and I felt I was in over my head, so I leaned heavily on him and the GC. I can tell right away if I trust someone...it's just something I feel or don't feel...hard to explain, and I felt that Scott was a man of integrity, skilled in his field, from the first meeting at the house before I purchased it, and I felt it every step of the way, even if some of those steps were frustrating or if I wanted a call returned quicker, or whatever...I never doubted his integrity or his expertise and that's what I need when I hire someone. I'm thinking that building a house from scratch, kind of comes with a whole lot of stress all around and all kinds of unexpected delays no matter how you slice it. There were times I wanted to scream and did, bec of all the walls we hit. I let my surveyor have it at one point bec of what I perceived as complete incompetence and negligence, but I later apologized. Finally, I have to add that our house in real life is even better than it was on paper for us! The time it took to design every inch and build was well worth! It ended up having every perk I always dreamed of down to the walk in closets, even though it's on the smaller size, and the light and accessibility have been life-changing for my husband. I attribute this to the integrity and professionalism of my architect and my GC. It's by no means a big fancy house, but every person who has walked in since it was done 1 1/2 yrs. ago, has raved about the simple beauty and peace inside. read more

What started out as a bad experience with this company has now turned into a terrible experience. We hired Scott for an extension on our home. It took 7 weeks to get the preliminary drawings , which was almost double of what he said it was going to take. From there everything fell apart. After 4.5 months, and dozens of emails, without even getting the revised preliminary drawing I had to ask for our contract to be terminated. Turns out Scott was sending our plans to the incorrect email address even though the correct address was on the contract and also on my business card which he said he had. When we asked for our deposit back Scott became rude and difficult. He blamed his mistake on me, saying that if I would have only called him instead of communicating through email, none of this would have happened. He also told me that, "Customer service is a two-way street" and then also accused us of not being ready to do this project and using his error, (which he never even apologized for), as an excuse. Honestly I thought in the beginning he was nice guy and just made an honest mistake but after seeing his behavior and lack of responsibility I would recommend staying away from this company. read more
