It's always a pleasure to find a new, non-AYCE sushi spot, and Ozen proved to be a good choice. We might aim for happy hour next time, M-F, or specials between 11am and 3pm. We arrived before the usual dinner time, so seating was plentiful, and the service was great. One thing that I noticed immediately was the range of nigiri sushi is a few cuts above (e.g. Bluefin, Black Snapper, and no Escolar). The rolls do center around the classics of California/Spicy Tuna/Crunchy/Cream Cheese, with spicy California variation. I avoid cream cheese at all costs, but there are sufficient choices on the menu. Rolls are well made and filling, too. We loved the yellowtail carpaccio, and the baked mussels passed our approval, as well. The star, for me at least, was the 9-piece Omakase sampler that included miso (or a salad) and the choice of either a spicy tuna roll or simple California. Spicy wins 10:10. I was pleasantly surprised with the chef's choice of sushi, too. So good! $35 is a remarkable value. All-in-all, we enjoyed ourselves. Our main server was a nice guy, and other people checked in on our progress as well. Well, I added my name to the waitlist, only to be told in person that they stopped using this option. Still waited, a short amount of time so that wasn't an issue for me. Might be one for others. We ordered the short rib kalbi, and asked that the are not sauced. They came sauced. My sister ordered the chicken teriyaki.. no sauce. Since she is a diabetic, it was really the only option that wasn't carbs or sugar. It came drenched in sauce. Apparently the chefs don't understand this request. They took back the chicken and remade. My mom's dinner took way longer than the rest of our party, because she ordered white meat. Waitress was kind, but it didn't make up for the gaffs. Ozen is a sushi restaurant next to the Coffee Bean right off the 210 at Haven. The shop itself is really cute and has aesthetic decor, plus they had Halloween decorations. There is parking outside and many other grocery shops and restaurants nearby. There was no wait on a Saturday night but the service was a bit slow. Overall, the ambiance was very nice for dinner but service was mediocre. (Don't forget to use your yelp check in for green tea ice cream!) Food We ordered Ozen's equivalent of a bento. We had one with katsu, salmon roll, and tempura, and one with 5pc sushi, salmon roll, and spicy tuna roll. (The rolls are half rolls, so 4 pieces). They each were $23 and came with a side salad, rice, and miso soup. The extra side dishes were nothing special but the rice was slightly hard. The katsu was fine and the rice in the rolls was a bit hard and fell out pretty easily. The sushi was good and the rice was much softer and easier to manage. Recently, I found a vein in my raw salmon and the skin was still on it, which shows it wasn't prepped properly. At first, I thought it was a parasite until my chef brother confirmed otherwise. When I called to let them know, the woman on the phone kept trying to take my order instead of listening to my concern, which was frustrating. Party of two on a Friday night. We were seated pretty quickly. Service was good and servers were attentive. Ambiance is nice. Most of the food was pretty good. Most importantly, the sushi tasted fresh and decent portion size. House salad - dressing was good but not enough and I didn't like the onions in it. Black snapper carpaccio - dressing was delish. Fish was fresh Miso soup - as expected Fried squid legs - cooked well, legs were crispy. Didn't like the Mayo and would have tasted better with a different sauce. I can't stay away. The staff are always so friendly and service is quick and complete. They check in, they make sure drinks are full, and they're always timely. The food is well made and fresh. My boyfriend and I went to eat here last Thursday, as we were eating a Mexican chief was being arrested and in cuffs for the whole restaurant to see. Have no idea what happened besides the man being detained and looking very distraught. As a Mexican American who enjoys Asian food I refuse to sit in a restaurant who doesn't even give a human being the dignity. The other Asian cooks were laughing and many people staring. I don't think people realize that when other races have needed our support we stand and speak up. Ozen has become a new favorite local spot of ours. We love the Scallops and only tried them for the first time when we were last there to sit down and eat. The sauce that was served with them on the dish was absolutely delicious. There was what seemed like Mexican-style pico de Gallo served on the side with it though, which seemed super weird at first but wasn't bad when we kind of mixed up everything together to make it like one sauce/salsa concoction (see attached photo). Their miso soup is so-so, it's not super super good..... but it's also not as bad as some other miso soups that I've had around town. I would definitely recommend the miso soup! The inside of the restaurant is so cute, they have fake vines hanging from the ceiling and the tables are spaced out enough so you don't feel like you are eating dinner with the table next to you like some other smaller restaurants. Honestly, my favorite thing here is the Jalapeno Bomb, which is a deep-fried stuffed jalapeno with spicy salmon and cream cheese on the inside. It's kind of expensive it is $13 for 5 pieces but still fabulous! The last time we ordered from Ozen it was to-go, and that was the first time we ever got a to-go order. It was actually pretty good except for the Main with 1 side which was salmon, the salmon was super overdone to the point we could eat it. This is one reason for the 3-star review. The Katsu chicken on the other hand though is WHERE IT IS AT!!! it was way better than the salmon, but hey now we know! I get a house salad almost every single time I go there because the dressing is delicious! And NOW for the other reason I gave Ozen only a 3-star...... drumroll please! The portions have significantly been getting smaller and smaller ever since they opened up until now. I know inflation is ruining it for everyone (so thanks a lot to all those that voted for Brandon but I didn't.) Because the price of everything has been going up and the portions are getting smaller it is actually referred to as SHRINKFLATION (yeah, you, on your google, go look that up). The most disappointing thing though is the Poke Cracker. The very first time we ever went here the Cubed Poke portion was huge and they gave us extra wonton chips for free and I was hooked. This was my favorite small plate on the menu. The flavor was amazing, the freshness was there, and the bits of shredded veggies they originally put on top as a bigger garnish would make it almost like a salad but not quite. But it was absolutely perfect. Ugh, it used to be soooooo gooooooooooooood! You could probably guess that I was a tad frustrated when I went back the next time only about 2/3 weeks later to see they decreased the portion by more than half, the Poke did not taste fresh, there was no additional flavor, it was bland and no other fixings and they charged us extra for 2 more wonton chips on the side. ( I figured it was a different chef working that day and kind of brushed it off.) But....the next time I went back I asked if the portion was still the same and how it was prepared. The server, who is very nice every time said the portion is about half of the bowl. I thought, "What the heck? I'll try it again and hope for the best." When it arrived at the table it was exactly the same if not WORSE, only a small part of the bottom of the square bowl was filled with the Poke and then the 4 Wonton chips on the side. Warning: The picture on the menu, when you're trying to order from Yelp for pick up or delivery shows a completely different picture of the real way this dish is served. It shows wonton chip-shaped bowls where those are then stuffed with cubed poke, but I'm pretty sure that's not how they serve them unless they changed it.... AGAIN. I also recall one time I had gone there with my pops and got an item that was not very good. I did not end up eating it and I told the manager but she never took it off the bill. Just be careful exactly what you order that it is something you know and like because I am not sure they will accommodate you otherwise. OVERALL, this place has fresh sushi and great service. Give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed unless, of course, you order the Poke Cracker LOL JK but not really. We will definitely be back because they have a really good happy hour! It's understandable given the hours, but this is a regular part of their business, and they should be ready for the crowd. Overall, the sushi here is great--both dine-in and delivery hold up well. Had Sunday lunch plans with my family and we all agreed the sushi was yummy and we'll definitely be returning! For a Sunday, it wasn't too busy. We waited for about 10 minutes for a table to clear for our party of 4. They also have beautiful outdoor seating but I only saw one couple eating there. Maybe when I go back I'll request the outdoor seating. The sushi was fresh and they made it promptly. I also got a bento box and it was huge! Ozen is a little sushi den that will have you coming back again and again. On my way back from a few mountain adventures I kept seeing this place and It was the only spot that was open after ten o'clock. Now that was a plus since I wasn't in the mood for fast food which I never am anyways, lol. I ordered the Have it All fusion nigiri that came with a lot of dressed up fish pieces. Now I'm not going to name them all but my favorites were the garlic butter and black pepper seared salmon and seared ika with a shiso leaf and ikura. Not to say that the other pieces didn't hit but those were just my favorites. Portions are decent for the price and that's another major plus with the cost of everything nowadays. Service was good and being open until midnight is always a good thing for the weekend. It's a decent sushi spot for the area and I understand why the locals love it so much. My friends and I decided to grab lunch after Sunday Service at Ozen in Rancho Cucamonga. This seemed like a pretty busy plaza however, we were able to find parking quickly and close to the restaurant. The restaurant was really clean and the service was great from the moment you walk in they were very friendly and attentive. I love this sushi spot! The otataki roll is my favorite thing here im obsessed with it i get it everytime i come. The Ikageso was bomb my favorite thing to get at any sushi spot for an appetizer. Also really enjoyed the tequila sunrise. I've been here around 5-6 times i always get the same and i enjoy happy hour. The service is great i've never had to wait long to get seated or to get my food. The only one time i didn't like my food was when i got sashimi, it wasn't fresh at all and I didn't enjoy it hence the 4 stars but the rolls here are phenomenal! Best sushi I've had thus far in California. The quality of salmon that topped my speciality roll was amazing. My albacore sashimi on point & The Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen was so delicious. They also have happy hour specials on both food and drinks which are amazing in both price and quality. I also LOVE that they're open late! This has been out go-to spot the past couple months. We've come with some friends or on date night and I love how they have a late night happy hour! I do wish the happy hour was at 8:30pm instead of 9 though, it gets a little late sometimes. The food we've ordered here off the happy hour and regular menu have all been delicious. Service has always been great too. There was maybe on time we didn't really care for our server. He kept making little comments that we were ordering a lot of food, we ordered all apps to share, so his judgey attitude was pretty annoying. Their apps are really good and lots of options. We're bummed not all the special rolls are part of their 2 for $25 deal, but we've had some really good rolls and would order again.
