There is a certain paranoia that exists mainly in women, but also in non-auto-savvy men when something goes wrong with their car. I've often seen these people peering into body shops attempting to keep undetected while trying to work out the trustworthiness of the owner from afar. Who do you trust? PA Atkinson. He's a trustworthy chap, offering a range of comprehensive services including repairs, servicing, tyre sales, wheel-alignment and MOTs. Since he was recommended to my girlfriend of the time by owner Phil's next door but one neighbour, I've happily recommended him to other people. And they have done the same. At the time of writing in Summer 2012 they are running a seasonal promotion where they are offering a pre-holiday multi-point vehicle safety check. This is a small, local garage, which came recommended to me by a friend - which is always good as word of mouth means a lot in terms of garages. No-one likes being ripped off, screwed over or any other mechanically-related idioms that basically means the garage is up to no good. Fortunately, P.A. Atkinson are simply up to fixing/ servicing/ MOT-ing your vehicle, without ripping you off. Which is what you want from a garage. We took our car in for a service, MOT and some minor repairs: all of which were dealt with very efficiently, with no fuss and no further problems. And at a perfectly reasonable price. The car was ready to pick up the next day, at the time that they said it would be and all has been well since. Its nice to find a trustworthy garage. Now go and tell your friends. read more

Absolutely abysmal experience from start to finish. Recommended by a friend who lives close to the garage but I have since learnt that he does not use Atkinson's any more either due to his own bad experience. I booked my car in for a new clutch but after booking the day off work and arriving nice and early to drop off my keys, Atkinson told me (with barely an apology) that he couldn't fit me in and we would need to re-book. Fair enough, I thought, these things happen. I take my car in a week later (another day off work) and the clutch gets fitted. I return to pay and I am charged more than the original quote. Okay, I think, so be it. I don't mind paying for a job well done so I pay and leave. The next day I discover oil spots on my driveway from underneath the car. I phone Atkinson to get the car booked in again. I take the car in (another day off work) and ask if he can look at the problem first thing and agree to come back in 2 hours. After a nice walk around Highbury Park I go back and he tells me that he would need to order a seal (a seal which he broke when fitting the clutch) which he can only get from Suzuki and that he'll call me when he has a price. I have no choice but to take my key and leave. So, in summary, I've already been to this garage 3 times (3 days booked off work and wasted) and the car still isn't fixed. I don't have an estimate for how long it will take or how much extra it will cost and I haven't been offered so much as an acknowledgement or apology from Mr. Atkinson for the trouble caused. I give up. Time to find a new garage who can actually fix my car. I get the feeling that if you have not been going to Atkinson's for many years and aren't able to talk to him about your holidays, kids, pets etc like old friends then he really couldn't care less about offering you any service whatsoever. I definitely would not recommend this garage to anyone and, from what I've heard, neither would anyone I know. read more

The best thing about PA Atkinson is that it looks like a garage from the 1950s. As a incurable fan of all things retro, I was always curious about the place whenever I drove past. Whilst I wouldn't say I was willing something to go wrong with my car just so I could visit, when I eventually DID have a problem (with my windscreen wipers, as it goes) I was more than happy to drop in here. They fixed them for me for a reasonable price and the service I got was friendly and not-at-all scary, as garages can be if you are as useless with cars as I am.
