Recommended to me by a friend who said P & Y Cafe had the best Jajangmyeon (or zhajiangmian) in Colorado. An unassuming place in a strip mall, several doors down from H Mart. Was helped by who I assume was the matriarch of the cafe. I ordered their number 1 black bean sauce noodles with pork, Jajangmyeon. My friend had mentioned that they make their noodles in-house and after my first bite, I had no reason to doubt their claim. A giant bowl of springy chewy noodles, topped with black bean sauce, with fried onions and tender hand-cut pork. It came with a side of kimchi, pickled radish, dice raw onion and extra black bean sauce. The main standout was the texture of the noodles. The kimchi was so crunchy and fresh, the picked radish also crunchy with a nice vinegar and not salty bite. I feel very confident in my chopstick skills, but picking these noodles up were a challenge, which is why I assume they also left a pair of kitchen shears when they delivered the noodles. Chewy, springy, bouncy. Not overcooked at all, because trying to lift out a portion to chow down on, the noodles would not break and you get had to get my face into the bowl and keep slurping until I got to the end of those noodles before I could come up for air. Ended up getting an order to go, the Lajogi or fried chicken with hot sauce. The recommendation seemed to be their sweet and sour pork, but it sounded too much like Chinese-American food. It was fried with onions, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, green peppers, jalepenos, cabbage and dried chilis in a garlicy and mildly spicy sauce. I'm not familiar with this dish, but maybe it's a Chinese-Korean dish? Not overloaded with sugar and vinegar that an Chinese-American dish would have, but still comforting. Also came with additional rice, picked radish and extra black bean sauce. You can taste the love in this place and just looking at the sliced radish they serve you, it has got to be cured and sliced in house. Family owned business. Service was a little slow. Not many employees. 2 in front and maybe 3 in the kitchen. Ordered the Jjamppong noodle. Came with a good portion of shrimps, mussels, and squids. Also all the shell of the seafood has been removed which is more convenient to eat compared to other places that include the shell. Soup was hot in terms of temperature so it's perfect during the chilly and cold weather. Not spicy tho. Noodle was smooth with a good texture. The veggies soaks up all the flavor so very tasty. It's a comfort food, so I was craving it this weekend and tried this place out! The noodles here are flat and thick! Super soft and chewy. The portions here are pretty big!! The sauce is a bit gelatinous but it works well with the slight dampness of the noodles. The Sweet and spicy shrimp dish had good flavor but it wasn't as crunchy as I was expecting. It honestly kind of seemed like it was fried a couple hours ago and then mixed with their spicy sauce. The shrimp itself wasn't dry but the coating was. The owners here are super sweet and nice. Some of the best korean Chinese food in Denver. Service and atmosphere is pretty basic, but the chef is a real Chinese chef cooking up authentic food. The combo fried rice is unlike fried rice from anywhere else and downright addictive. You can taste the wok sear on it, and the meat is perfectly prepared and juicy. The jja jjang myun is pretty good. I've had better, but the ingredients are fresh and this dish is pretty close to perfection. Sweet and savory, these noodles in black sauce is one of the most popular Chinese dishes in Korea. Jjam ppong is awesome, but I always upgrade here and go for the premium seafood version. It's so worth it, with the piles of fresh scallops, squid, mussels, and shrimp. This is delightfully spicy and well-made. And finally, I always get the tang soo yook (sweet and sour pork). They do it so well with perfectly fried chunks of meat and tasty sweet and sour sauce. Way better than typical American Chinese sweet and sour sauce. If you get a chance, eat on site. When you take this food home, it's still awesome, but it's even better when you eat it there, freshly prepared. When dining there, don't be surprised if they bring you the sweet and sour pork right away without any rice (it doesn't come with rice) before anything else. It's a Chinese custom, and from their own perspective, not doing this would be rude of them. read more

Sometimes the Chinese plates at Korean Chinese restaurants are more tasty than many of the Chinese restaurants in town. P&Y Cafe Asian Bistro was one good examples. It has been here for at least 10 years and was always packed with customers. Their menu was not overly complicated but had everything you would expect from Korean Chinese restaurants. One of their most popular items were sweet and sour golden fried pork. The portion was larger than the orange chicken and sweet and sour pork in Chinese restaurants. Their pork nuggets were well fried and had more textures compared to their Chinese counterparts. Another most ordered plate was their black bean sauce noodle with pork. They brought kimchi, pickled radish and raw onions with what seems to be oyster sauce. I didn't try any of the sauce. The kimchi - delish. Radish pretty good since I actually ate some as I usually don't like the texture. No raw onions for me. The portions of the dishes we ordered were good. And my dish had plenty of shrimp and seafood. Tasted good. Hot and spicy - but not too spicy. His dish did not have enough meat in it. Lots of noodles but barely any pork. Will have to amend order and add some meat dish next time so he has some protein. The tangsuyuk tasted just like how my mom makes it at home and it had a crispy, thin breading that I appreciated. At other places, I've been disappointed because they would have tangsuyuk with hard, thick breading and very small pieces of meat. Not here! The jjajangmyeon was also very good. We ended up going with gan-jjajang and tang su yuk. The gan-jjajang was really tasty and not oily, like I've seen in some other places. Most tang su yuk I have tends to be a little dry, but I'd have to say that theirs was still juicy and well seasoned. The owner was really nice and and was very attentive. I knew what we were looking for, which was the stir fried version of jjajangmyeon, but couldn't remember the name of it. He was even nice enough to take the time to answer my questions and explain the words. It's been a long time since I worked in Koreatown in LA, so it was definitely appreciated. After living near LA's Koreatown for 14 years where I used to get jja jjang myun and jjam bbong on the regular, when I found P & Y Cafe tucked away next to H-Mart, it was one of the most comforting moments I've had since moving to the Denver area. Like JJM and JB places in LA, P & Y isn't fancy, but it's good. I had the Seafood JJM, which brought plenty of noodoh and sauce for about $13. The flavors were on point and it's definitely enough for a meal even for big appetites. They'll give you the traditional radish, onion, and kimchi for sides here like you'd expect at most places that serve JJM. The service is friendly, and you pay at the counter when you're done. If you're looking for a casual, comfortable place to get some JJM near the city or the burbs, P & Y is a great choice. read more

Best place for Korean-style Chinese food. They've got handwritten menu items all around the wall, ranging from dumplings to jajangmyun to garlic chicken. Side dishes are pretty standard with onions and pickled radish and cabbage kimchi and they're very generous when you ask for more. They're pretty generous with everything, really. You can easily order one jajangmyun or jjampong and ask them to split it into two. If you're going to do that, though, order tangsooyook or the hot garlic sauce with fried chicken to eat family style. Servers are nice, too! Water is constantly refilled and you're checked up on often. I've had the jjampong, jajangmyun, hot garlic sauce with fried chicken, and tangsooyook. I prefer the non seafood version of the jajangmyun, but they don't cheap out on the seafood at all. I do prefer the seafood version of the jjampong, though. read more

The tangsuyook and especially gganpoongi were one of the worst I've had. Tangsuyook was very dry and lacked meat. The sauce was way too sweet in a bad way. Gganpoongi..... We come here a lot and this place doesn't disappoint. The service is great and we love the food here. I usually get the dry black bean noodles...it is a little heavy and the portion is HUGE so I usually split it with my husband. Cant recall but one of my Singaporean friends ever mentioned to me, about this restaurant and she told me it was good. Cant recall which dish she ordered though. Was here with A.W from running some errands in this part of the neighborhood. Thankfully we managed to get a seat for 2, before the LUNCH RUSH Weekend Madness. Saturday April 7th 2012 Time was about 11:50hrs ish. Once seated, given the menu. We browse the Menu. It was sunny outside so I am exactly not sure what to order let alone trying to figure what I am craving for that Lunch hour. I am slightly puzzled with the "offerings".. Is this a KOREAN restaurant which offer Chinese and Korean dishes or ????? From the "brief" menu, here were the items we ordered : * Crab Cheese Wontons * Szechuan Beef * Korean Noodles with Thick Black Bean Sauce (Seafood) if I am not mistaken or if I could recall correctly, this dish named is Jajangmyun.. Once we decide on these, we waited. Man, this place is indeed jam-packed with other Patrons alike, mostly being Koreans, coz whenever, another "party" comes inside, the servers spoke in Korean to each other. I bet this place is indeed swamped with "REGULARS" who knew about the food and perhaps its the only in town where you get that kind of food. Anyhoos, while waiting for our order to be ready, the servers gave us the pickled daikons, raw diced onions, "mystery black sauce" and kimchi to our table. For this "condiments", it was just A-OK. About 5 to 10 minutes of waiting, my order of Crab Cheese Wontons arrived. Nothing stellar nothing fancy. 5 minutes later, my main entree of Szechuan Beef came. Such a disappointment coz, for one, they fried the beef into GOD KNOWS WHAT I AM EATING, it was SO TOUGH, that my appetite went DOWN SOUTH. It was spicy and sweet in a BAD WAY. As for the Black Bean Paste Sauce with Seafood, it comes with "variety" of seafood and raw diced of white onions.. This dish comes with a pair of scissors. Man, this dish alone is a WEIRD dish in some good or bad way, depends on what you look at, or even taste. We shared all these 3 dishes, being the WEIRDEST was that Jajangmyun. No wonder you need that pair of scissors to cut the noodles into chewable, edible portions. That THICK SEAFOOD BLACK BEAN PASTE Sauce, is so bland, but it can be addictive too in a WEIRD sense of way. A.W, my friend bet to differ, since I think she is liking the dish she ordered. Mind you, one bowl is DEFINITELY plenty to be shared among 2 or 3 friends. Another disappointment about this Jajangmyun are the amount of tiny seafood you can find or perhaps "go thru" with bits of octopus tentacles, dried scallops of somekind, and if you are lucky bits of diced shrimps. At the look from other tables, other patrons are enjoying their food ESPECIALLY this Jajangmyun, but not as much for me. Stayed crispy until I got home which is 20min away. Cons: A little over $17 plus tip was $20. I feel like the price is high for the portion size but my parents seem to think it's appropriate. We stumbled across this little hole in the wall gem. Every seat in the house was filled on a Sunday around 3pm. The food is amazing. Authentic. The owner has passion. You can see it in her face as she cooks and interacts with her guests. We live an hour away but have been thinking of this place since our visit.
