I had no idea that there were so many talented you local youth (14-22) that are so creative and talented. I am still speechless from what I saw tonight at their Art Show. I'm not an artsy (pardon my lack for a better word) fartsy person, nor a collector but I do appreciate art for whatever it is to me and to the artist. I asked a young man by the door who were all the artists... are they local? I stood their gazing at the wall next to him and he said, "I did this" I honestly almost laughed and was in disbelief. Marcos Hidalgo's work blew me away so much that I posted some pics of his work and others on FB by the time I reached my car. By the time I started the engine there were a couple posts asking about the artwork from some friends. All these young folk have MAD TALENT! I noticed a lot of younger folk that I know locally and was so surprised and grateful that they have a nice outlet for their creativity. Youth Arts Collective is a non-profit organization and I look forward to donating money to them once the time is right (when I have money to donate). Honestly, if you or your child has the knack for art or just interested, I'd look into them. Tonight was their 11th Birthday Celebration but also their Opening Night from 5 to 9. Tomorrow (1/29/11) they have an Art Show from 1 to 4pm. I highly suggest you stop in and see what the buzz is about. The place was packed with great energy, a nice vibe and a lot of excitement. It's on July 28 and by the time you read this it'll be too late. But do drop in ... They are open til 7 pm so when you're in the area, don't forget to stop in and have a look. Next to the parking garage on Calle Principal. I'm not affiliated with them, so don't worry Yelp. Just a community member who likes to support youth and the arts. I like my Ali portrait and am going to gift it but only to someone who would appreciate it.

Being an avid motorcycle rider, it was interesting to learn he often paints himself in art-pieces on a motorcycle. If you visit the gallery; take time to speak with the director. Ask her anything about Mr. Kinkade. You will walk away knowing Mr. Kinkade a little better. More importantly, you will realize he was a great guy. The Kinkade company is lucky to have Ms. Cox (the director) representing his work.

It is a small museum but an absolutely beautiful one worth visiting. As a birder, I loved the cases of taxidermied birds, one of the largest collections of this type on the West Coast with over 400 specimens. I was even more enchanted by the jade room full of jade pieces and artwork derived from right here on the Central Coast, the giant Grizzly Bear, the gorgeous nature field guide mural/artwork upstairs, and the imaginative Room of Wonder full of items that had long been stored in the Museum basement and now brought back to viewing public in artistic settings. This room is mesmerizing and hard to describe but you should definitely see it for yourself. Native Americans are included as well as Asian Americans in the different displays, which I appreciate and feel contributes to the holistic and unified way in which the natural history of our state is explained here. One of the highlights, though, was meeting Bill, a volunteer guide at the museum. He gave so many interesting facts, helped with cool photo ops, and conveyed his genuine love for nature and the community. He is the heart of this fine place. We hope to see him again! If you haven't been to the Natural History Museum, I highly recommend a visit. Locals can get in free.

It is truly humbling to see your work displayed alongside other fantastic artists. It is a wonderful space. The staff is extremely friendly. My exhibit is over, but check out their next exhibition.

I came here on a whim, and it ruined my entire birthday…read more Initially it was cute, a quaint little shop with a mixed bag of art. I was surprised to find a case with some antique jewelry, and a gold locket caught my eye. I asked to inspect it closer, and the lady working said, "That's $100. I can take it out, but I'll have to move everything to get to it. Are you actually thinking about buying?" Why else would I ask to see it? I was appalled, first there were only two paintings she had to move. Second, it was marked at $30, but even if it was $100, so what? It's Monterey bay, do you think I can't afford it? I was honestly shocked by how rude she was. This is the second time someone remarked about my ability to afford something, both times I wasn't wearing a wig. (I have cancer, and my hair has fallen out, so I'm bald now.) Even if I was poor, or looked that way, I wouldn't have deserved being treated that way. My sister and I left the store. But that's not all! She chased us down the street, said it was the wrong price, and that it was only $30. To her credit, she offered to give me a discount. I was still confused: you're telling me that you wouldn't move all that stuff for a $100 sale? But you would for a (now with a discount) $15 sale? Now that you think I could afford it? I went to look at the locket, but at that point I just felt sick to my stomach and wanted to go home. I don't know if it was the owner, or if it was an employee, but I won't be coming back.
