My walking tour guide was the one who made me aware of Padeirinha Doce, and I'm glad I paid a stop since it is considered a "landmark" confeitaria. Unfortunately, they didn't have much in regards to vegetarian-friendly savory options (vegan? Forget about it, haha!). I didn't want sweets so I ended up getting a large, brightly-yellow colored bread roll alongside my cappuccino. It ended up being a decent snack for a 15 minute walking tour break! After gobbling up the roll, my friend and I had to dash back downhill to continue the tour, haha! Many Portuguese baked goods have this bright yellow color due to the egg yolks prominent in the recipes. They also have an intertwined history with the church (of course) and while my walking tour guide went into depth about those stories, I have to be honest and say I wasn't paying too much attention as my mind was on where to get fuel to appease my growing hunger, which Padeirinha Doce helped to curtail!

    Tart so so

Maybe 3.5 Simple local pastry shop open early for breakfast bites. Fare price for the quality. Chicken & Ham Sandwich pretty good. Egg Tart was cold and meh.

One of the few places open super early on a weekday, this small bakery is a gem. Filled with locals sipping coffee, I enjoyed my small latte here. My chocolate croissant was dense and dry. Tasty but it's not what you'd think in a croissant. My entire order was three euros.

Padaria Ribeiro is a bakery/café with origins from 1878. Same as some of the other reviews…read morementioned, I came here because Rick Steves guidebook included this shop in his walking tour. Looking from the window outside, I spotted familiar savory pastries. I suspected correctly that they would be served room temperature direct from the display case. (They don't offer warming serves of prepared pastries.) At the counter, the cashier spoke perfect English. I asked her about favorites of savory pastries. We bought pastries of beef, chicken, 2x shrimps (her favorite), and 2x cod fish (traditional Portuguese recipe). For the why-not of it, we also got a full-size pastel de nata and a mini size. These are packed in takeaway package trays and paper wrapped. To avoid the crowds at the outside tables, we walked to a plaza around the corner and enjoyed them while people watching and looking at the octagonal 4 lions fountain called Fonte dos Leões. Perhaps because we are familiar with these types of pastries, we find the flavors subtly enjoyable. They don't have big chunks of beef or chicken or shrimps inside (American style). They contain finely chopped and well-seasoned fillings inside a potato pastry shell or a flaky pastry shell (for the beef). The potato pastry shell is less common in the US (except maybe Porto in Los Angeles area). In any case, we enjoyed our food overall and thought the prices are reasonable. These would be 5 stars if they warmed them up.
